Our little room was on the ground floor of the Casa de Carmel and was what you would expect from a nice motel (not really a hotel) - small but clean, the sheets even had the mild smell of bleach. If you're in Carmel, you pay more for the basics. This place reminded me of that.
The receptionist was incredibly nice. She walked us to our room across the street (check in is at the Monte Verde Inn) even though it was pouring rain. There was a complimentary decanter of sherry in the room which was a nice touch. And the breakfast basket is left at your door first thing in the morning (juice, yogurt, rolls, croissants and packets of jelly). The room has a coffee maker with packets of coffee.
What I didn't like was the noise. The walls seem to be paper-thin and I don't know WHAT was going on outside, but the noise level was crazy. It was okay at night but starting at dawn, it was so loud that my husband and I couldn't do anything but laugh. There was no way we could sleep through it.
Warning: the tap water comes out scalding hot instead of warm. They need to fix that before someone gets badly burned.
