“Cool in Carmel”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

This was the second time we had stayed at the Lamplighters. It was good to share with our American friends this boutique hotel, they had never stayed here.
Words that describe Lamplighters are cool, cute, quiant, neat, friendly and welcoming.
It reminds me of a model village, with little cottages everywhere.
Free happy hour with cheese and wine is part of there daily ritual, served around a largo modern outside fire. Seating is placed all around the fire, so a chance to mingle with other guests.
Location is great, three minutes to the beach and three minutes into the delighted up market shopping areas. Carmel is not tatty and hotels and inns cater for the more discriminating traveller,
Lamplighters certainly falls into that catagory.

Breakfast is a buffet, and this was my only niggle, as the buffet is served like in a shed. Ok when the weather is sunny but not sure when it's raining or cold. ( perhaps it never gets cold in Carmel)

Bedrooms were cosy, clean and comfortable.
A must if staying in this area. Highly recomended.

We have stayed at the Normandy Inn, just up the street, on a number of occasions. However, we have been dismayed over the extremely poor attitude of those who work there, especially the guy who works the front desk daily. He essentially hung up on my wife the last time she called to make a reservation. I suggested that we try the Lamplighter due to positive ratings on this site. The young lady who took my call was very accommodating. Upon our arrival, Peggy greeted us and gave us more than enough attention. By the time we left two days later, we felt like we knew her and some of the other staff. We met the owner, who was there overseeing the production of a new fire pit and patio. He was also very pleasant. The grounds are lovely and the site is three blocks up the street from the beach and two blocks down the street from shopping. We have two types of fireplaces in our room (Hansel and Gretel), which opened to Ocean Ave. The only issue we had was a problem on our part. To get into the room, there is a split door and we liked having it open. However, we had a few occasions where passersby stuck their heads inside our room. We could have closed the door but we were willing to endure this for the positives that came with the atmosphere. Our daughters had their own room and, though it was a bit small, they were very happy. They were even able to have Shadow, the house cat, stay in their room both nights. The evening wine and cheese event was very nice while the breakfast offerings were minimal but acceptable. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Hansel and Gretel was nice. However, there is another larger room that those who work there recommen...

The cottages were fresh, clean and inviting! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful! We would recommend the Lamp Lighter Inn to anyone who is looking for a chaming boutique inn rather than an upscale modern accomodation as it depicts the charm of the quaint Carmel! We could hear the ocean and had a partial view through the whispering pines from the Sea Lion room. The fireplace was cozy and inviting as the evenings were quite fresh mid November. And, the outdoor firepit was a welcoming place to gather around with other guests for wine and cheese each evening.

Room Tip: If you are able to manage carrying luggage up stairs the Sea Lion room had great views and we could...

Stayed here for a couple of nights in November. The hotel is beautifully decorated, and the social area by the fire fountain is a real highlight and a great way to talk to the other guests, many a funny story exchanged! The inn is right by beach and a 30 seconds drive from one of the 17 mile drive gates up to Monterey. Breakfast is good and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

The only downside I would say is that the rooms can be a bit noisy in the morning and the shower heads are far too low. I am 5"10 and need to crouch to fit underneath. I'm nit picking but it's annoying!!

We stayed at the lamplighter inn for 2 nights as part of our 4 week honeymoon in the USA. We booked this after a crazy 8 days in LA and Las Vegas, so the laid back nature of Carmel was a welcome relief. Everything about this B&B was top notch. We booked the Porpoise room and we were so impressed, such a lovely room with a fireplace! It was exactly what we needed to recharge our batteries. We were probably the youngest people at the Inn, but we still enjoyed the wine and cheese in the afternoon by the fire. It was great to just sit, have a wine and enjoy the afternoon! The management was amazing, very helpful with where to go and what to see. Nothing was to much for them. Being Australian's, they even put out Vegemite in the mornings for our breakfast!! The continental breakfast was also the best we have had on our trip so far. So all in all, it was a perfect stay and I would highly recommend this for anyone wanting a nice relaxing getaway!

Room Tip: If you are looking for decent wifi, I wouldn't recommend the porpoise room as we didn't get...

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of our holiday to Vegas & San Francisco so glad we did. We booked Hansel & Gretal cottage which is so cute with lovely log fire. We were made to feel so welcome with a lovely bottle of fizz waiting for us. The fire pit outside where guests sit and chat is so lovely cheese & wine early evening is such a lovely touch. Peggy can't do enough for anyone she's a great person wanting to know what everybody has been doing in the day and where they are going to dinner helping with reservations etc. Shadow the resident cat is quite a character. We would love to return one day can't think there would be anywhere nicer to stay in Carmel.
