good location tucked between 2 shopping areas. hotel is clean, spacious, nice pool, and the grounds are nice.
We chose the Mission Inn after a day at the Monterey Aquarium and were not super impressed for the $105+ rate. We usually shop hotels in this range and have stayed at many with much better amenities and better location for the value. Our 2 boys were really looking forward to some hotel and spa time and they were both out of order. There was a nice shopping center close by, but by no means is this a hotel in proximity to the shops and restaurants in Carmel we were hoping to be near. The bathroom was noisy, but the bed was very comfy and the room was updated- hence a score of 3.
There is a lot that is good about this hotel: the location is convenient to Point Lobos, Carmel, and points south, the rooms are very clean and nicely decorated with updated bed coverings and bathroom fixtures, the outside spaces are nicely landscaped and arranged, the breakfast food was basic but good, the employees were mostly friendly and helpful, and it is a great dog-friendly hotel - there is a paved trail and grassy area right next to the hotel.
There were a couple of small problems with our stay. It was a bit noisy in the room because of hallway sounds and the TV from the room next door (it seems this sort of noise can't be avoided in most hotels). Although most of the employees were kind and helpful, on Christmas morning, at the breakfast we had paid for as part of our "bed and breakfast" package, the employee attending to the coffee tried to charge me $2 for coffee. I said, "I have to pay for coffee when I already paid for breakfast," and he said, "Yes, because you have coffee in your room." Then he paused and said, "Oh, well, because it is Christmas you don't have to pay this time." Although we had just signed for one morning's breakfast for two, they charged us for two mornings. After we talked to them, they corrected it.
The price is right here and overall the stay was very good. If they can just iron out a few of the kinks, like not monitoring the coffee so closely, the experience will be excellent.
We spent two nights here the weekend between Christmas and New Year. We had a fourth floor room at the end of the hall, which was very quiet until the last morning, when we had somewhat noisy neighbors on the other side of a connecting door. We enjoyed the hot tub, the outdoor fire pit, and the fireplace in the dining room. The swimming pool was pretty cold, but that's not surprising at the end of December. We loved the aquatic decor in our room, with lots of blues and greens.
Breakfast was not included in our package, but we were offered it for half the price we would have paid walking in off the street. The food was good, especially the spicy fried potatoes, the cranberry bread, and fresh fruit. The atmosphere in the dining-room was more like a lounge - big easy chairs instead of standard restaurant chairs. The service in the hotel and restaurant was great except for the bartender in the lounge. We had coupons for a drink apiece, and were treated like the money was coming out of the bartender's pocket. We always tip based on what the price would have been, and probably would have stayed for another drink if the reception hadn't been so chilly. There were complementary hot hors d'oeuvres, but we did not know this until we talked to another family outside by the fire pit. Oh, well, that meant we had a good appetite when we went out to dinner in downtown Carmel.
The hotel is very close to the Mission, and not far from Point Lobos, one of the most beautiful places on earth. There's a supermarket right across the street, so pick up some goodies, and find a gorgeous spot in either Point Lobos or one of the beaches in Carmel to have a romantic picnic (or a family picnic, if that's your style).
This was our second time at Carmel Mission Inn. This time it seamed even nicer. We came with our dog Katy and everything was perfect. Very large rooms that are nicely decorated with a Miami Beach vibe. Ask for the Trip-advisor rate and they may throw in a buffet breakfast. We got two cocktails included, nice. The location is right off highway one and next to a couple of nice shopping centers with good restaurants. Try Lugano in the Barnyard if you like Swiss food.
Very friendly staff and a great place to stay if you travel with dogs.
