We were expecting to do a lot in and around the ranch. In reality, we found this is is not possible unless you book well in advance of your stay (e.g horse riding - only six places per daily ride and at least 7 days notice needed). The ranch does not seem to have the facilites to cope when it is full. Even eating on site at the restaurant has to be booked well in advance.

There is one decent pool, but anyone under 16 is banned from using it. The kids pool (where families thus spend their time) is small, crowded and charmless. This is really frustrating given the highly daily cost, and the fact that it is the default activity if you cannot book up anything else.

We took a hilltop suite, which was of a decent standard, but our two kids (13 and 11) found sofa bed and rollout beds in suite uncomfortable.

Overall expensive for what it is able to offer.

Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you were so disappointed with your experience here. Your point is valid that during the summer months, many of our popular activities are in high demand. We are aware how frustrating it can be to come here and not be able to participate in so many of the wonderful offerings we are known for. I am truly sorry that was your experience. Our team has several ways we are making efforts to address this, including making pre-arrival calls to as many of our guests as possible in advance of their stay. By doing this, we hope to ensure reservations are made during the busy months for all of the activities and dining you may wish to enjoy. In addition, we are always looking for unique and fun additions to add to our 'playlist' so there is a wide variety of choice and availability for everyone. I am sorry you felt the River Ranch Family area was lacking. With a Junior Olympic Size swimming pool, splash zone, two hot tubs, tennis courts, sports court, bocce ball, and Cafe, I am surprised, but curious what made you feel that way. I would be interested in your thoughts on what we may add to that area to enhance it. We love new ideas and I invite you to contact me personally so I can chat with you further about your stay. Thank you again and please feel free to reach out to me personally at 831-626-2548. Sincerely, Melanie Cooke, Manager

We stopped off here on honeymoon on our journey down the Californian coast and we loved it! From the moment we entered the ranch gates every inch of this place amazed us. From the views from our room, to the pool area, the endless list of activities to do, to the beautiful restaurant it ticked all the boxes.

There are endless cosy fires to sit by at night which is really cosy! The smell of lavender around is just divine and the jacuzzi opens 24 hours!

We didn't want to leave! Would recommend this to anyone!

We stayed here for 2 nights as a family of five but wished we stayed longer. The rooms were good (no lock on bathroom door??) Parking at rooms and at reception. Food was nice at hotel , staff were friendly. Food was expensive though. We wanted to take part in horse riding but all booked up for the days we were there :( and crazy expensive ($125 for 1hour!!!) Kids pool was very away from main building ? But cars took you down for free but this was a good stay and would recommend

Dear Joseph - thank you for your review. While your family clearly enjoyed your visit, the items you mentioned that were less than expected could have been avoided, I feel, with an outreach call prior to your arrival. We try to do this whenever possible to ensure that we have offered reservations for our activities (Horseback Trail Rides, Bee Experience, etc...), dining as well as describe the various options for your meals, and to personalize your stay to ensure your experience is truly memorable for your family. I am sorry if we were not able to connect with you prior to your stay but look forward to your next visit with us. Please feel free to contact me personally as I would be happy to assist with your arrangements so we can ensure you get to enjoy all you hope to here. Sincerely, Melanie Cooke, Manager

Carmel Valley Ranch is a lovely location: Spanish moss-draped oaks, rolling hills, lavender, honey and free range turkeys. Brigitta at the spa is a-mazing. The pool and inifinity hot tub are relaxing. But after three visits, my husband and I agree that the service is hit or miss. For sure, these are first world problems, but from housekeeping to bartender, waiter and spa reception there are just too many lapses for it to be given 4s or 5s. I gave it a 4 due to location, room quality, spa quality and tranquility. Service: 2-3

Room Tip: Brigitta in the spa is wonderful. Not an ideal location for kids...I think they'd be bored. Te...

They said the hotel was full every night we were there but you never would have known it -- the place is so peaceful. Our family of 4 (including 2 teenagers) spent a wonderful, relaxing 5 days at CVR in late July. The place is beautiful and serene. Everyone who works there is supremely kind and helpful. The rooms have been redone and now have charm AND modern conveniences. We spent lots of time at the adult pool by the main lodge, which was quiet, serene, and relaxing. Try the beekeeping -- it is great fun. Wonderful breakfasts at the main restaurant (try to sit outside if you can). We had a dinner our first night at the restaurant for my son's birthday, and the meal was outstanding. We would return to CVR any time. It is not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for.
