“Wonderful Experience!”
Reviewed 30 May 2008

My husband and I had such a wonderful time staying here! The view was refreshing, the room was clean and comfy, and the location was perfect for evening walks through Carmel's quaint streets and shops. Am not sure what the other reviewer expected for breakfast, but we simply loved the fresh pastries and fruit. The ladies at the counter (both evening and mornings) were friendly, helpful, and simply a joy to chat with. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend it.

Our family of 4 enjoyed our overnight stay at the Hofsas. the staff was friendly and very nice. The family suite was spacious and fairly quiet. Trying to negotiate the maze of stairs, walkways, etc. was amusing & we eventually got the hang of it.
The beds were comfortable, fireplace was a nice touch, bathrooms were clean, etc. The towels were adequate although a bit on the cheaper quality side. The best part was that the hotel was within walking distance to the beach, downtown, etc.
It was a perfect fit for us!

I called Hofsas House directly for an 84th birthday celebration. 4 adults, and one dog. I was explicit that we did not want any stairs due to two elderly mature travelers with bad knees.

When I learned that they did not have elevators, I was told they had a cottage. We were assured the cottage had access that did not require any elevators.

We arrived at 10 p.m. I double-checked about the stairs. We were told there were only 5 or 6. I was a little worried and then confused. The shortest stairwell had 15 steps.

We were exhausted, and there were no rooms available on the street level. Our birthday cottage was impossible to reach because it is only accessible via stairwells. We were given 2 very small rooms near the back parking lot for the same price of the cottage with kitchenette. No $ breaks.

We stayed one night then went over to the Monterey Bay Lodge where the renovated rooms were larger, the price was less expensive, the staff very friendly, and NO stairs. The staff cheered us up and our adjacent rooms were next to the pool area.

If you are traveling with individuals who have knee difficulties, don't go to the Hofsas House. We still enjoyed Carmel even though the area is built on inclines. It's the stairs that are the problem. I recommend Monterey Bay as it is flat and the drive to Carmel is about 5 minutes.

  • Disliked — We were led to believe the cottage was accessible for elderly travelers with poor knees.

Anyone who's been to Carmel knows it's a resort-like village for higher-end vacationeers. The Hofsas House Hotel proves that there are still establishments willing to cater to this clientele (not downgrade their service) at a reasonable price - so their money can be spent on the lavish dinners, Coach Bags, and Pebble Beach Golfing. First and foremost, the staff at Hofsas House Hotel were fabulous. Each of the front desk hosts went out of their way to help us pick restaurants for dinner, draw us maps when we wanted to go for a scenic drive, and make reservations for us. They were real people who loved their town and wanted others to see it - not just push places where they got a kickback.

The rooms were great! It is a well-established hotel, so the building is aging a bit - but it was very clean and had brand new linens and rennovated bathrooms - which are the most important parts! They even upgraded our room since we were traveling in offpeak season and during the week.

They had heated bathroom floors, comfy beds, a heated swimming pool, saunas, ample parking, and Dutch-style doors - which were so cool. It means that you can open the top half of the door, while keeping the bottom closed.

If I had to name a downside, it would be that it is the last hotel on the main street of town. But since the town is one square mile, that is really no problem at all - as long as you're aware. I would recommend it to anyone, except perhaps my 90 year old Grandmother.

  • Liked — the staff and the price
  • Disliked — nothing - possibly the distance from center of town

This is a great place to stay in Carmel. I have stayed at Hofsa's house several times over the last few years, and really like it.

The location can't be beat: Hofsa's House is about a two-minute walk from Ocean Street, near the shopping and restaurants there, but it is not close enough to get the ambient noise from that area. It is about a 10 minute walk from the beach.

There is a spacious parking lot in the back and also some on-street parking--if you've been to Carmel, you know that parking can be a hassle.

The inn appears to have been/is going through upgrades; each time I stay here, the rooms and amenities are a little nicer than the time before.

Every room I have stayed in (3 different rooms) has had a fireplace and the inn provides you with logs. Nice! Also, each room I've stayed in has a little kitchenette area with a fridge--no stove but a microwave, cofee maker and plates/utensils.

The inn offers a continental breakfast every morning, which contains fresh fruit, pastries and coffee. They will give you a tray to take your food back to your room which is nice too. The lobby also has a ton of menus from the restaurants around town, which is nice so that you can browse them before you make a decision about where you might want to eat.

The staff are always very friendly and warm, but not intrusive.

Also, I know that this inn is a very dog-friendly place (have seen several guests with their dogs); I am not very fond of dogs but staying here is not an issue, our rooms have never seemed to have any residual pet-issues (smells, stains, or noises from other rooms).

I have stayed here with my husband, but another thing I like about Hofsa's is that it is a good place for a girl's weekend too, because there are rooms with multiple beds/rooms if you need it.

The price is reasonable, the location is great. I highly recommend it!
