We spent two nights at La Playa Carmel right before Thanksgiving. We were immediately greeted by staff and were offered help to our room. The hotel is charming--old and historic, which leaves the rooms to be a bit small. However, the little things like open windows and modern bathrooms leaves La Playa competitive with the rest. The bed was AMAZING-- I slept like a baby! There were nice touches like complimentary shuttle service to the downtown area, nightly free wine tastings, and a daily free breakfast-- complete with omelettes and waffles-- YUM! My only complaint would be that we could hear noise from other rooms as we were on the second floor. Other than that, I would definitely plan to come back to La Playa for all of the "personal touches" that made our stay extra-special.
PS> FREE wi-fi was also a fine amenity, FREE parking, and NO resort fees!

Room Tip: Stay on a higher floor for less noise!

Spent two days at La Playa Carmel. Enjoyed the expansive breakfast on the second level with a fairly good view of the ocean/ Carmel Bay. Close to the beach which has a quiet road to walk and enjoy the cliff side views of the bay. The architecture of the hotel and homes are very eclectic as well.
Interesting note: Carmel has no street addresses, just descriptions of where the homes and businesses are located; such as Camino Real at 8th Ave, sometimes mentioning West (beach) side or between corners.
Our room was quite warm, so the hotel provided a fan which solved the problem. Apparently there is no air conditioning because the buildings were built long ago (1905). The walls are thick, so the rooms are quiet, but we were under the breakfast area, so the chairs made noises from opening around 7:00.
There is a pool but no jacuzzi, and well maintained grounds. Bicycles are available to rent but no exercise room. Did not use the bar area which looked quite nice because the town had much to do and see.
The town is compact and has a multitude of shops, restaurants and wine tasting cellars. Wine tasting is $10 for a flight of 3 to 5 tastes. The wines vary in quality and price, so shop diligently. Restaurants and prices in general are fairly pricey.

Room Tip: Don't get a room under the restaurant, it can be noisy unless you want to get up early. Our view...

Wasn't sure what to expect when we booked this hotel being in a bit of a touristy spot and knowing that there was very little parking in Carmel. First off there were no problems parking, the hotel is located 5-10 mins walk from the town center so plenty of spaces. The experience just got better from then on, the staff were so helpful and friendly, the decor was elegantly done, the grounds immaculate. Wine tasting in reception early evening followed plus milk and cookies later and champagne breakfast, fantastic! We payed extra for a sea view room and it was worth it, the view was exceptional, room very comfortable and quiet.
In all probably the best hotel experience we've had in the US, wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, we very nearly changed our plans and stayed an extra night but the Napa valley beckoned...

Room Tip: Go for a sea view, its worth it

Drove into carmel just as darkness fell with no reservation for the night. We had driven up the coast from morro bay (a must do. Breathtaking) and there is no cell reception for miles and miles! We drove around a bit overwhelmed by all the choices of places to stay...popped into two and were not impressed. Then i pulled up trip advisor and in three minutes we were driving down towards the beach and la playa hotel! It is everything the reviews say it is. We got a fantastic room at huge discount as they wanted to fill the space. Have already booked another night. We have to change rooms (tonight is friday after all) but will be allowed to keep the great rate. Rafael at the front desk is our hero! Had wine and bruschetta in their bar...delicious...then walked up the six blocks to dinner. Bartender gal was sweet. Handled two rude customers very graciously. Cant wait to explore carmel in the daylight!

There are not enough wonderful things I can say about La Playa. The hotel is beautiful and nicely renovated. The rooms, common areas and especially the gardens are maintained to a very high standard. The location is the best in Carmel. Close to the beach and walking distance to everything, plus they offer a shuttle to anywhere you want to go.

The best part about La Playa has to be the staff. I've never stayed any place where everyone genuinely seems happy to work there. It translates into wonderful customer service.

Room Tip: High floor with ocean view.
