Diplomats' Holidays
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Chorto
Reviewed 20 May 2014

We have been holidaying with friends for 30 years, and in 2002 we found the Diplomats', and have been going back every year since. Our stay has now extended to 3 weeks. Maria and her daughters Tina and Sissy, work hard to ensure their guest requirements are more than catered for. The Diplomats is situated in the beautiful area of Pelion, and within walking distance of the small village of Chorto, where you can by supplies etc. other lovely villages with their shady squares, or lovely beaches are within easy reach by car. All the apartments are individually designed, in a unique setting. The sea views are spectacular, with steps down to the beach and the crystal clear water. The apartments and studios are clean and comfortable with air conditioning if require. The Diplomats Taverna is near the waters edge and swimming pool, serving wonderfully prepared Greek delights. Flights are direct to Volos which is not too far away, but we choose to travel to Thessaloniki, which is a long but easy and pleasant journey passing Mt Olympus on the way. Can't wait for our next 3 weeks in June/July and again meeting up with the locals and other regular visitors to this beautiful place.

We stayed at the Diplomats in June 2013 for 2 very lovely weeks and really didn't want to leave. We first became aware of these apartments 12 years earlier when we stayed at the Panorama Milina around the bay and hired a little boat and sailed past the Diplomats and I really have no idea why it took us 12 years to go and stay there! We have been to many places in Greece over the years and I have to say that this has got to be one of the most beautiful situations imaginable. For us it had everything we needed, well appointed apartments (plug socket near a mirror and a shower curtain!) as well as amazing sea viwes from the balcony where we used to sit and watch the fishing boats come across the bay at night. Maria's on site Taverna run by her and her 2 daughters and their friend was in a perfect setting right overlooking the sea and I just loved the fact that from there or the pool you could walk down some steps on to the little pebbly beach and straight into the calm clear sea for a swim.
I can't rate this property highly enough and although it is situated on quite a steep hill the benefits of the views from all angles more than made up for the walk back to the room. You can walk into town in around 20 mins and we hired a car for a week and went off to explore the mountain villages of the Pelion which are all lovely. Loved it so much we want to go back this year. Jo and Donal, Manchester.

Room Tip: Ask for an 'upper room as not all the ground floor rooms have a full sea view

Nice surrounding but the rooms are right up to the hill and you need a car to go to the beach.
There's no breakfast facilities and you also need a car to go to the local market to buy food.
So, if you seek for a secluded place and you don’t mind “stiff hill” it’s a nice place to be. I was there with my baby and unfortunately there wasn’t a way to go to the beach by the stroller, I had to go by the car which is not really the ideal kind of vacation for me (driving all the time). I would be nice if I was told about it by the lady I spoke on the phone in order to book the room.............

Room Tip: Try rooms that are close to the beach

no place like it: the quiet, the water, the sky, the sunset, the people, maria, the olives, the feta, all of it: simply divine!!!
i can only wish i had two more months to stay in this resort with its ancient olive groves, the beautiful people, the silent nights, the starry skies, the crystal clear agean sea the walking treks along the sea in the morning, the bakery in Milina, the coffee in the restaurant porch, and most of all, feeling so much at home!!!!!

Room Tip: ask for direct view to the sea

This was our fifth visit to the beautiful area of The Pelion in Greece. We first discovered Pelion over 10 years ago and very little has changed. We have stayed in various places in Pelion but first saw Diplomats on our first visit when we were staying at Lafkos. We vowed we would come back and stay. Unfortunately we have not been able to get booked in until this visit when we booked ourselves instead of with a tour company. The hotel consists of lots of varying accommodation down the hillside to the beautiful sea and every apartment is different. We were lucky to get apartment with large terrace overlooking the sea and wonderful sunsets. The owners are lovely and very welcoming. There are some very steep slopes/steps in the hotel so be prepared for a hike either down to sea/restuarant or back to car park at top but its worth it. Our apartment consisted of a largish room incorporating small kitchen area with sink, 2 ring hob, and full size fridge, bed and table and chairs with separate shower room and toilet and was traditional greek style with pine furniture and small tv. We also had a large private terrace with table, chairs and a sunbed. Some of the terraces are not so private. Parking is plentiful which is good as a car is definitely needed, as the hotel is a 20 minute downhill/uphill back walk into Chorto where there is just a few tavernas and small supermarkets. The majority of tavernas are in the next village on in Milina. Equipment in the apartment could have been better and we had no kettle or frying pan, just one very large saucepan and one smaller one. As it was the end of the season perhaps it was better equipped in the beginning. However, we did our own thing for breakfast and eat out every evening and had some lunches in the hotel restaurant which again has amazing views. The swimming pool is also lovely, very quiet and peaceful with ancient olive trees providing plenty of shade, All in all a wonderful relaxing place. A pity we only had one week this time. We love the whole of Pelion and have in our various visits been everywhere we could reach by car and sometimes by boat but consider that Chorto/Milina area is the best. The tavernas are great, fresh meat, fresh vegetable and best of all fresh home cooked real chips! A 3 course meal including house wine cost between 25 and 35 Euros per couple. The swimming is better than anywhere else we've ever been (and we've travelled all over the world). There is snorkelling but this is not as good as the red sea area but the water is really crystal clear and warm. Beaches vary so you do need swimming shoes on but once in the sea bottom is usually sandy. The hotel is about 1 hour 30 minutes easy drive from Volos airport. Wish I could spend a month at Diplomats!

For my family is the second time at Diplomats Hotel. Everything is great, the location, the hospitality, the view, the accomodation, the small beach, the cats and most of all, beautiful tavern just above the sea. The food is excellent - all meals are homemade.
Strongly recommended for those who want a quiet, peaceful, charming and relaxing holiday!

Just returned from a wonderfully relaxing week at Diplomats. The accommodation is in several buildings built up a steep hillside with courtyards and greenery and right on the tiny beach. We had the most amazing sea view from our room (rm 8) but unfortunately, no terrace or balcony. Our table and 2 chairs were beside the front door in a courtyard and it was lovely but a pity that we couldn't see the sea from there. The room itself was large with a kitchen area - sink, fridge, table and mini cooker ie 2 cooking rings and a small oven (which may have had a grill in it - not sure as I didn't use it). If you wanted to cook it might be difficult due to an absence of pans! Maria is so helpful though I'm sure she'd find you one if you asked. There wasn't a kettle either but we took a travel kettle although I had emailed Maria before we went and she said one could be supplied. The shower room was really nice (for a Greek bathroom). Not particularly large but nicely tiled and immaculately clean. The shower had a perspex enclosure so no horrible shower curtain sticking to you! The bed was not the most comfortable as I could feel the springs (and I'm no stick insect!), and 1 of the pillows was rather lumpy but neither of these things prevented me from sleeping.

The swimming pool area was very nice, the pool being set in a slabbed terrace with grass and trees and plenty of sunbeds and very, very peaceful. A few steps away and you were on the beach. The pool was looking rather algae-ified in places but the water was clean. I didn't go in the pool after dipping my legs in and feeling as if I had frostbite. My hubby said it was much colder than the sea but I'm sure it was fine once you took the plunge.

The bar area overlooked the sea and the prices were on a par with everywhere else we went. Cheaper in some cases. We only ate there on one of our evenings but the meal was delicious.

Chorto is TINY! There really is very little there. A few places to eat and a couple of mini markets. It takes about 10 minutes to walk there from Diplomats. Take a torch at night as it is very dark in places. 3km away is Milina where there are some shops and more eating places.

About a 20 minute walk from the hotel is Olive Tree Bay (I think that's what it's called) and we had the most wonderful day there. There's a beach bar and clean toilet and if you buy a drink you can use the sunbeds for free. The warm sea was crystal clear with a sandy bottom. We had lunch there too and were reluctant to leave.

If you want to do the steam train ride here's a bit of advice. We drove to Aghia Lechonia and intended purchasing a return ticket but due to the train being filled with Germans on a coach trip we were only able to buy a ticket for the Milies (the other end of the line) back to Aghia Lechonia stretch. So we drove to Milies, stopping several times en route, got on the train and left the car at Milies then got a taxi from Aghia Lechoni back to Milies. We were pleased that we did this because the train journey takes 1 hour and 15 minutes and the scenery is beautiful but you really wouldn't want to do it twice as both journeys are on the same line. The taxi took 16 minutes (as some indication of how slowly the train goes and how maniacally the taxi driver drove!). For 4 of us it was cheaper to do the single journey at 10 euro each and the taxi was 25 euro, as opposed to 18 euro for the return train ticket. Also take note that during September and October the train only runs at the weekend.

We just loved this wonderful area of Greece - and we've been all over Greece. Would love to go back and almost certainly will. If you like to explore and get bored easily I would suggest picking up a car at the airport and foregoing the transfer (if you've booked a package). You are then free to thoroughly explore the fantastic Pelion region.
