This hotel has no territory of its own at all.The bathroom is tiny, you can hurt yourself against the sink. The room is very little. The food is awful, there is no variety of dishes. You cannot choose anything to eat. After the meal you have to clean the table by yourself.
The beach is 15 minute-walk from the hotel.

Room Tip: I don't recommend to choose this hotel.

Karteros Hotel is an ordinary hotel. not that good nor that bad. We were staying at a standard room, facing the Iraklion-Agios nikolaos Highway (75 or 90, depends the map), and without closing the window we could not sleep, which required a negative experience of sleeping all night with AC on. There were also tons of musquitos, so the AC was also a solutions for that. So much for the negative part. The bright side of this hotel is its location, far from noisy Hersonisos, and some 15 minutes bus ride from THE MUST SEE OLD CITY OF IRAKLION!! especialy its port. Than again, the problem is that the bus (number 7, 2 Euros if you don't have prepaid ticket which you should find in kiosks which doesn't exist in the hotel surroundings...the pre-paid ticket is 1.5euros), suppousdly every half an hour, tends to arrive in a much longer intervals. Going back to the hotel: Ilias, its' owner or administrator, is very nice, very helpful and you can get anything tourism related. We managed to book a car rental through him, and it was not as cheap as in Hersinisos (we saw ther a 16 Euro per day offers!!!), but it was good price (70 Euro for two days, all included, Hyunday Atos. we traveled 400 KM and spent only 40 Euros on gasoline). The food in the hotel is good. simple but good, especialy in the evening. One un pleasent problem that we faced concerning meals: we could not figure why, but they tend to put a terrible radio station that plays the worst crap-bum-bum-trash music people tend to "enjoy" in discoteques not before having 20 beers, two rows and a bottle of ouzo, raki or vodka. Go figure. In any other ocassion across the island (Melia, Retymno, Agia Galini, you name it) where ever we enter to sit and dine there was pleasent music, greek or otherwise, so the music issue at Karteros was realy a mystery for us, an unpleasent one. Only after insisting unpleasently and in full contradiction of the expected and otherwise respected principle of "the client is always right" (or atleast let's pretend that he is), we managed to lower down this crap-trash-bum-bum to a minimum, sometimes even sparing it alltogether. Notwithstanding, and even if the foto of the hotel on its' official website is misleading (unfortunately, for us at least, the hotel in not in the middle of nowhere but encaged between "old national way" and highway90-75), Karteros is a hotel worth staying in. Being there you must pay a visit, at least once, to the KONAKI TAVERNA, located 100 meteres westward from the hotel, on the old-national-way, infront of a small church. Food is amazing - Mousaka, greek salad, Tzaziki, etc - and the owner is as pleasant as can be.
As for North-East Crete: there is a on going myth that it is spoiled, over crowded, and all sorts of that romantic-nostalgic bla bla. Yet true - Hersonisis is THE OUTMOST LIVING MANIFESTATION OF THIS MYTH (in Hersonisos case no myth but naked truth) - as any other myth it is over simplifacation and generalization if to put it mildly. Rent a car, and go to Neapoli, and than go North to the north-eastern part of the island, and you see what I mean! godforsaken villages, where most houses were built of a local stone, goats, sheep, olives, etc. Good old, very old, Crete just 45 minute drive from noisy, corupt and "shiny" Hersonisos... don't miss it! you can start from the opposite direction, namely from Agios Nikolaos, on the road that goes north to Elounda, Spinalonga and Plaka, but you should go further up the mountain, where you can enjoy breathtaking view of the leper-colony island, and than continue to the other side of the mountain, facing again the north coast of Crete. I am talking about villages such as Vrouchas, Selles, Kato-selles and Vlichadia, in which we even find an excellent Taverna, where we were over-priced in an un-greekian manner (39 Euros for a fish, a portion of french-fries, one greek-salad, a coke and a bottle of water...). Nevertheless that worth it... the fish was extraordinary, and so was the greek-salad. The owner of the place - an impresive greek fisherman with the longest beard we met in our lives - was part of the meal... either way, DON'T MISS THIS PART OF CRETE!! so the next time they tell you, that north Crete is corupted, you can say, "there is more than Hersonisos to the north coast". And ofcourse, and again, Iraklio's Venetian city is splendid, and so is Retymno, let alone Xania. It doesn't mean that the south is not as lovely... Agia Galiny if to mention just one incredible spot.
So Karteros Hotel is an excelent departure point to all these Crete beauties. Enjoy!!!

Room Tip: rooms to the north might be quieter

Karteros is a chic small hotel. It has a very nice terrace with a little waterfall, banana trees and a lot of vegetation all around, a nice pool and game facilities like Backgammon, ping-pong table etc. the hotel is situated in a quiet area a little bit far from everything, so you have to rent a car to get downtown or to Aqua Park from AutoLele which is a few steps away and which has cars with full insurance. Karteros is a nice hotel with spacious rooms with all facilities you need, helpful staff, wide range of food, so I would definitely recommend it.

The hotel is near one of the big beaches of Heraklion. It is quiet, very good staff and quite cheap. The only downside is that it could use some renovation, but nothing that would put off a visitor.

Karteros is a nice hotel with clean, spacious rooms, nice pool with beds and umbrellas and near the pool you also have backgammon, ping-pong table etc.so you can't get bored. We had half-board and the food was excellent, the only bad thing is that if you are late a funny little man will argue with you in his own language :)
Near the hotel is a car rental with full car insurance more expensive than downtown, but those don't have full insurance. I think this is an important thing to do because we had a little accident, a greek hit our car and from that we hit the car in front of us, so we were very happy at that point and realise the importance of a full car insurance.
A tip: if you don't have a car you'll have to rent one to get downtown.

i was pleasantly surprised by this hotel, has all the facilities of a 4 xxxx hotel , we were both very satisfied with the hotel staff . and the food was something else- much better than what we have been used to in similar hotels.the closeness of the hotel to the beach made. it special for us.the bus facility which passes the front door enables one to get all over the island.i recommend this hotel without hesitation.
