Description: Texcoco is a region in Mexico considered to be the birthplace of Lamb Barbecue (Barbacoa) in this country. Along the roads of Texcoco, a rural area 15 miles east of Mexico City, Barbacoa stands and restaurants serve this unique dish. A weekend tradition, Barbacoa now extends across Mexico, as families flock to eateries that specialize in this style of cooking. The Barbacoa style includes slow roasting meat for more than seven hours in an underground fire pit covered with the succulent leaves of the maguey plant. By using a specialized oven, we've replicated this process, making our Barbacoa the closest to traditional lamb barbecue you'll get in the US. As a result, our restaurant has been highlighted in press across the nation including by The Travel Channel's Andrew Zimmern and Rachel Ray Magazine. Many types of meat can be cooked Barbacoa style, however lamb (borrego) is the most traditional. It's also rich in flavor and considered to be a healthier alternative to beef or pork. Because preparing Barbacoa takes hours and expertise, families in Mexico go out to eat this special food. In addition to savoring the flavors, Barbacoa is also a social tradition, a time for family and friends to bond.

I can't help myself when it comes to try a lamb dish when in different cities and I think I just found one of the places that really deserve the road trip to have a great meal; I was in town for a concert and decided to try some local food and ended up at Aqui es Texcoco; we ate here twice and both times we had an amazing experience from the service to the food; we did try different dishes during our two visits and were very satisfied; I also tried the pulque and it's an acquired
taste but I really enjoyed. I took some food home (they have a nice to go package) with
plenty of lamb, beans (tasty beans) and a guacamole with nopales that I wasn't so sure about it but it was a hit with the family back at home in Los Angeles (I told you I travel for food); all dishes
comes with a nice lamb broth that is so good and I don't like soups or broths that much but I did like this one very much because it was so full of flavor; I will stop by this place next time in the SD area. Give them a try!

I found this place looking for places that specialize in lamb. Food is good but beware the lamb may not be fully deboned. They have lamb tacos, enchiladas, soups, and other lamb dishes. Service is good. I was a little confused walking in if it was sit yourself or order at the counter. It is table service. The counter apparently is for to go orders. They also carry some TJ craft beers. Overall a nice place for some alternative mexican food.

I like this place because they sell more than just great barbacoa. I visited this place when they first open the doors. I liked it back then but now they are much better. I like that they sell more than just barbacoa because I ma not always in the mood for that. Service is great and prices are reasonable. Plenty of parking space.

Had late breakfast with 2 friends. All of us were impressed. Delicious. The lamb cooked for 5 hours is melting in your mouth. Rolled tacos, sopes, huitlacoche quesadillas - excellent. Quails - nicely roasted. The flavors - perfect. Exactly what I love Mexican food for! Highlight of my trip to California.
