The whole area surrounding this huge ocean-like lake is underdeveloped, rustic. At the southern end, there are small towns, at the north end, a larger small town, Lakeport. In between are simply little villages that are rather run down. The lake is towered by an extinct volcano, Mt. Konocti, and is forested with mostly oak trees. This area is dry and hot in the summer. Lake county has little in the way of business or industry other than small tourist casinos and water activities. Camping is at the nearby State park near Kelseyville, which offers a boat launch and beach also. Lakeport offers mostly jet skis, parasailing, boating, fishing. The southern end of the lake offers similar activities. For such a large lake, there are only a few decent beaches and one in the State Park. Because the lake is so vast, crowded boating areas is not a problem. Driving from end of the lake to the other takes up to 30 minutes or more, most of the roads are two lane. I prefer using the lakeside road that hugs the water on the east side of the lake. The views are great and it just reminds me of a resort. The road on the west side takes you away from the lakeside view. Clearlake offers a rustic vacation that is inexpensive. There are few four star hotels, the best is maybe three stars. The lake is really not an international destination or even out of state like Lake Tahoe is, it is more for in-state visitors. Other than lake activities, there is really not much else. I would not call the area a "resort" but it is good for most water sports and camping. The whole area is VERY laid-back in atmosphere, so don't worry about how you look or what to wear. It is NOT high end, but low end. From Santa Rosa, it is about 1.5 hrs either up Hwy 101 or through Calistoga and Mt. St. Helena, which is a 3500 ft mountain. If you are not into water activities, the sightseeing will not be worth it alone.

My husband want to go bass fishing here really bad!!! We are from the east coast to we booked a guide (Ross England) thru his web site. We had a great time and Ross was awesome!!!! The weather was great and the fishing good. We were there at a good time of year and went early in the morning. It was a one thing off my hubby's bucket list!! :) We did not hand around the area for anything else because of our time constraints.

The views of the lake and the dormant volcanoes can make a quick stop worthwhile, however it is very overdeveloped around the lake with lots of trailer parks and beat up stores. Lots of Indian casino for gamblers, if that's your thing. Kind of a down and out place unfortunately due to poor civic planning.
