Best Western El Grande Inn
Ranked #2 of 5 Hotels in Clearlake
Reviewed 20 February 2007

My husband and I just returned from a weekend trip to clearlake, for what was suppoosed to be relaxing. We usually trust BW so we decided to stay here. The only good experience we had was that the front desk personnel was very friendly. Parking was an issue, especially at check-in, where we couldn't get a spot due to employees and the bar patrons. When we asked about the safety of our car in the back parking lot- the long hesitation and the response of "probably" didn't sit well with us. The room was clean and spacious (perfect forthe price), the problems were the result of everything else surrounding the room. We arrived at 5 to find the bar and lobby packed with drunk people. If you stay here, check to see if any events are going on in the banquet rooms at night. The banquet rooms are left open, so all of the noise fills the interior atrium. The banquet rooms were set up with a dj which played until about midnight. The party filled the hotel- people were running around all night yelling, screaming, fighting, puking in the elevator, etc. When they finally left- the party continued out into the hot tub area and the parking lot. We finally fell asleep around 3am when we heard the last beer bottle being thrown. Next time I would drive further on to Middletown or Lakeport for a hotel.

I have stayed in this hotel alot for work. I have also stayed at the Travelodge down the street and at other places around. The qualification for this review is that the BW El Grande is pretty much the ONLY choice in Clearlake.

The Travelodge is ridiculously overpriced and not worth the money, especially considering the element it seems to attract on weekends, so don't waste your time or money. Also I have stayed there and woke up the next morning to see someones car broken into. Clearlake as a town, is pretty much a mess of a place with some very strange people hanging about.

The El Grande is clean and well maintained and the restaurant is OK. Rooms have a fridge and microwave, which is welcomed for long term travelers. The suites are serviceable but only really necessary if for some reason you need a seperate room with a couch.

Internet access is good and its nice to have a recliner in your room to decompress in.

The only three somewhat minor complaints I have are that I have:

- There is no interior stairway, so you always have to take the elevator, which seems like overkill if you are on the second floor. The stairways on the outside do not provide access INTO the hotel, there is no key swipe to let you in. So you always have to walk in the front door...annoying....considering the next complaint...

- I would echo the previous reviewers comments, the pull through at the front for guest registration is ALWAYS choked with cars, which would be fine if the registration were busy, but all of the cars belong to employee. I always saw them park there and I can pretty much tell which car belongs to which employee. Before I even walked through the door I could know who was working the registration desk because of one of the cars parked out front. Why the owner or manager would allow the employees to park in the entrance of their businees is absolutely beyond me.

- If you go to sleep early dont get a room that is directly above the outdoor hot tub. Drunk and loud hottubbers at 11 PM outside your window don't make it easy to sleep.

Stayed there a couple of weeks ago. No parking out front due to six other cars parked in the yellow zone. Found out the next morning that all six cars were owned by employees, so had to haul all of my possessions from the side of the building. Went to the front desk and had to wait for about 10 mins. A cook came out first and said that the girl will be right there to check me in. I asked for a reccommendation to eat, they said to eat right here at the BW but after seeing the dirty, greasy uniform the cook was wearing, decided against it. Was also disappointed with the Mexican resturant accross the street. Went to my room, the bulbs in the bathroom had burnt out and also the batteries in the remote were dead so I had to request new. By the time I returned to my room, the bulbs had still not been replaced so I had to wait another hour before I could enjoy the room. In the morning, I could not get the chill off the room with the heater, I think it was on a timer...very uncomfortable to get things together in the cold. This was also the first BW that did not offer a complimentary buffet breakfast for the guest. Will not stay ever again.

I was presently suprised with this location. The rooms must of been recently rentovated, as they were nice, spacious, and newer funiture. The room was very clean, and housekeeping was quick to respond, for extra towels, and a roll a way bed. I even checked out the pool, and hot tub area. Not bad for a Best Western, I thought. Front desk is really nice, and there is good Chinese food across the street. ClearLake is not the place I anticipated, and our first hotel at Konoti Harbor had roaches. Be careful of the term "Resort" in Clearlake. It is used VERY loosely in this area.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel to get away for a few days! Unfortunately, the shower never got hot and there were ants in the bathroom. The place was nice though!
