Booked rooms thru DirectInn.com - checked the motels web site and looked at pictures - all seemed fine until we tried to reach them direct- they never answered the phone, nor did they respond to a fax and an e-mail - another hotel actually made contact to confirm our rooms- then when we got there the owner working in the office did not speak English - the smell was awful. There was garbage around the grounds- it appears that transients are staying there- the buildings are in terrible condition, patched stairs and railings- the pool and surrounding area are a health hazard. Thankfully we were able to get rooms at the Fallon Hotel - and all was not a disaster !

My husband and I stayed at the Columbia Inn Motel this past Saturday. We were going to a concert at the Ironstone Winery and by the time we made reservations for the night, most places in Angels Camp and Murphys were booked. Though we had called a few days before, the Columbia Inn had no record of our reservation. According to the gal at the front desk, she had no idea who we were and had no vacancies. She was nice but not very helpful. After pushing her for quite a few minutes, she found an empty room but was reluctant to give it to us. My husband finally convinced her to at least let us take a look at it. Turns out the door would close because it looked as though the door had been kicked in and the interior molding had busted loose. We had nowhere else to go and the gal at the desk let us have the room for the night at a discount. We ended up pushing a chair up against the door to keep it shut.

The room was clean and had a disinfectant smell about it. The pool was a gross green. The floors squeaked horribly. The walls were superthin. Though the room was a nonsmoking room, the people next door smoked nonstop and the smoke filtered into our room.

On the plus side, it's close to Columbia State Park and though it's fairly close to the road, we didn't hear much road noise. I would never stay here again. We heard that the new owners have only had it for a year and we can only hope that they can turn the place around.

The room was good - two double beds although one was a sofa bed, fridge and coffee making facilities. Air con worked fine - very hot when we were visiting. Only a couple of minutes walk from the old town of Columbia.

The place needs a bit of attention but I give it 4 stars because of value for money.

I only booked this place because the other "better" hotels were fully booked and were v. expensive. I could not book online but did so over the phone from England with no problems.

While it is near the historic district, you had better bring along a blanket and an electric space heater if you intend on staying in below-zero weather; there was NO OPERATING BUILT-IN HEAT in our room. The clerk did not inform us of that fact until we had already moved in for the night. While there was a built-in bath, it was too cold to enjoy it. Next time we will try the quaint Columbia City Hotel instead.

The room was perfect... location, size, value. My husband and I and our 2 year old truly enjoyed our visit. The owners are VERY nice and accommodating.

Of course, the hotel is older and could use a little updating. However, for the price and location, who cares!

My husband and I recently travelled to Columbia, CA. I found this hotel on the Tuolumn County Vistor Bureau website. It is a clean and inexpensive place to stay if you are traveling on a budget. The owner was very nice. My only complaint were that the room we got was a bit creepy, maybe because of the furnitures. But all else were fine. You can book your reservation online through their website.

I've stayed here several times and always enjoyed it. The location is perfect--just across the street from the historic Gold Rush town. When I come here, I usually walk everywhere except for side trips to other towns.

The staff is always friendly and helpful. This motel is not new and is showing a little wear, but it is well-kept and clean. It's set back from the road and is very quiet--and there's almost no traffic at night. There's a pool--in the summer Columbia can get into the 90s or above. It is closed in the winter and the enclosure locked, but one improvement would be to just drain and cover the pool and keep the sitting area available for nice fall days (like when I was just there).

Columbia is a wonderful get-away, less than 3 hours from the Bay Area or Fresno and on the way to Yosemite. Yeah, it's a tourist haven with gold panning and stagecoach rides, but it has historic ambiance and real businesses operating as living history exhibits. There are also hotels and restaurants inside the state park boundaries.

Everything in the historic town is within a moderate walk from the motel--or a short ride for those who need to drive (vehicles park outside, so the atmosphere is preserved). With the motel so near, it's easy to take a nighttime stroll to the old town, walk along the deserted street past the Wells Fargo Express office and imagine what it was like to be an Old West sheriff, prospector, or madam (and unlike many towns, it's perfectly safe to do so).

Columbia is a great place to introduce kids to Western history!

  • Liked — Comfortable, conveniently located
  • Disliked — ?
  • Tips/Secrets — Columbia is more of a spring or summer destination and not aprime ski area. So fall and winter rates are much lower, if you can travel then.
