We stayed here for 4 nights in March, and really enjoyed it. The courtyards are so pretty! The lush landscaping is so well maintained. It is like having your own hacienda in the heart of Coronado. It was fantastic to have a kitchen, although we didn't use as much as we should have.
As everyone else has stated, the location just can't be beat. One block to beach, or the Del, or shopping, food, etc..
This is not a 4 star stuffy hotel. It is a relaxing, quaint little hide-a-way, next to one of the most beautiful beaches in the continental US!
We went to Little Sam's to rent bikes every morning to bike around the island, and we ate breakfast at Fabrison's. (The hotel had a nice, but simple continental breakfast served in the courtyard, with fruit, muffins and cereal). Go to the french cafe, and get the banana and cajeta crepe, it was simply divine!
We will definitely stay here again, and recommend to our friends and family.

When other reviewers say "vintage" and "historic," they really mean old, musty, and outdated. At least that was our experience in our room. I'm sure some of the other larger rooms are nice, but our room took us back to the 50's...and not in a good way. The tables, bedroom furniture, couch, and lamps were outdated. The curtains were musty and stained. The carpet was stained from use which makes it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 20 years, I didn't want to walk barefoot on it. Our second night there, we returned to our room and the power was out - but only in our room. We went down to the front desk and they got the power back on, but our food in the fridge spoiled so they reimbursed us for that at check out. We were right next to the shops and restaurants so it was very loud (with all windows closed) late into the night, even after the restaurant closed because dishes and silverware crashed and clanked as the staff cleaned. The continental breakfast is cereal and a variety of store-bought mini donuts and muffins. I would recommend spending a little $ and going to the French restaurant for breakfast instead, the crepes were very tasty.

But...even after all that, the location really is unbeatable. Located right across from Hotel Del, it's a short walk to the beach and all of the cute shops and restaurants on Orange Ave. The El Cordova staff were helpful and pleasant. Miguel's was always packed and smelled so good, I'm bummed we never got a chance to eat there. The grounds were beautiful and well-kept, I loved the landscaping and fountains. If only the room reflected the grounds, I would have given it 5 stars!

Room Tip: Request an upgraded room away from the restaurant noise.

Thank you for sharing your experience at our property. I am sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant stay. Our focus has always been to ensure that every guest leave with the feeling of a positive visit.

It seems that you may have stayed in one of the rooms that have yet to be renovated. I am happy to report that we will be renovating 12 more rooms this May, scheduled to be completed before Memorial Day Weekend. Once this phase has been completed, our entire property will have been renovated in the past 5 years.

I sincerely hope that you will consider us again in the near future. I am confident that you will be more than satisfied with the new look and feel of our rooms. I also believe that this may change your opinion of this hotel. Thanks again for choosing the El Cordova Hotel.

El Cordova Hotel is situated perfectly in the heart of beautiful Coronado. It is directly across the street from the beach and the Hotel Del Coronado as well as several restaurants and shops, all within easy walking distance. The accomodations are modest, the hospitality friendly and accomodating. There are two restaurants in the courtyard, a pool, continental breakfast, and shops surrounding the courtyard. El Cordova embraces traditional and tasteful California Spanish decor; it is simple, comfortable and afordable in an otherwise very expensive location. If you want a fancy boutique hotel, look elsewhere. If you want clean and simple accomodations with beautiful surroundings while enjoying the town, El Cordova is a great choice.

Looked and smelled clean. Staff could not of been any more friendly. Cute little continental breakfast. Tons of shopping, restaurants and bars. A few blocks from the beach. Room and bathroom were small but no big deal, we only needed a place to sleep. Could not beat the price!! Only downside is no parking lot and walls are thin. I will be back though, loved this place!!

I had always wanted to stay at El Cordova because of the inviting courtyards and entry way. The price was about $230 a night. The rooms were outdated, smelled a bit musty but were very clean. Bathroom was small. If you stay upstairs, the steps are very steep-
But it's the location that makes this hotel great- right on the main street- walking distance from beach, shops and restaurants. They have a complimentary breakfast. Staff was friendly and helpful- If you are looking for modern- this is not your hotel- Very Historic and vintage-

Thank you for your recent review of our hotel. I am disappointed to hear that your stay with us was not fully satisfying. The outdated and vintage feel of some of our rooms is something we are currently addressing as we are preparing to renovate a large amount of rooms very shortly.

I invite you to stay with us again once these renovations have been completed and enjoy our great hospitality.

You could not beat the price for the location. The staff was very friendly and the hotel was very pretty. The rooms are very small and a little rustic but the bed was surprisingly comfortable. For the value, I would certainly go back. I may just pay a little more for a larger room. Also, the continental breakfast was not that great. The catering company they use did not have much to offer and nothing healthy.

Room Tip: Pay more for a larger room.

This is my first choice when company comes to town! This historic building is charming the minute you step in the lobby. A very personable staff that go out of their way to make your stay the best. They even upgraded the room to a lovely suite. The rooms are all different in shape and size which makes for an interesting layout. The courtyard is lovely for breakfast although we opted to meet our friends next door for a Mexican breakfast at Miquel's restaurant. The best part of this hotel is the fact that you can walk to everything in town! And--- you can just go next door to The Brigatine for the best fish tacos in town!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street noise.
