“Take it from a local...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2010

Being locals we don't get to try out Coronado hotels much, but we were homeless while our house was rented to tourists and couldn't leave town until the kids were of school. I had always been curious about the El Cordova, so I popped online and was thrilled to find a one-bedroom suite (with kitchen) for $200/night. (Priceline has never worked for me in Coronado!)

Location - perfect! A short walk to everything on the Hotel Del side of town (including the beach and lots of restaurants). Ferry Landing and the bay require comfortable shoes, a bike, or a return to your car.

Ambiance - Boutique hotel. Love the Spanish decor, especially the vibrantly colored tiles everywhere you look. Our room was functional, but very basic (I do wish they'd invest in some pictures on the walls and a bit more kitchen accessories). There was just enough space for the four of us - the bedroom with a queen bed (for my husband & myself), a fold-out couch (for my pre-teen daughter), and a very uncomfortable roll-away (perfect to torture my teenage son). Teeny tiny bathroom! My favorite place was the quaint courtyard (Warning: You may never leave here.) complete with fountain, large BBQ, and small pool and jacuzzi...the perfect place to relax and escape from noise (when the pool is not being used).

Service - Quietly efficient and helpful. Complimentary coffee & tea in the lobby is a nice touch.

Parking is cheap - only $6/night (with in & out privileges) at the underground garage across the street. Or, you can park on the street and keep filling up the meters (for 25 cents per hour) every 2 hours between 8 am and 6 pm.

If you want to avoid the restaurants and stores that survive only because of the ongoing influx of tourists, check out my Coronado list to find out where the locals go...

We just spent a couple of nights at the El Cordova with extended family for a birthday weekend for our mother who turned 90. We had five rooms at EC of various types. Room #75 was a two bedroom two bath with a dining room that would seat 10 a full kitchen and huge living room. It over looked the street and the Del with slight view of ocean. I had a one bd one bath #51, which was a nice first floor room with a not so great view of the back alley. The front faced onto the nice courtyard with a nice pool and gas BBQ area if you want to cook. Price was very reasonable for what you get and where you are located. If booking I would inquire directly with the desk and make sure you get an upstairs room on the street side rather than on the alley side.

The staff was very nice and helpful. One house keeping staff even greated us one morniing with "thank you for staying with us."

If you are lookng for a great place to stay that is close to the beach, downtown, and places to eat, than stay at EL CORDOVA. I stayed there for 5 days and found them to be a great hotel. The manager Josh Kelly was very helpful and the rest of the staff was too.
The rooms were large and very clean. I ate at Bino's and Miguel's and both had great food. Yes, I would stay there again. If you have questions, email me. fireontheuproll@comcast.net

Spanish style boutique hotel with 4 restaurants across the street from the beach and near the Del Coronado Hotel. Great prices if you call ahead in winter and ask for a discount while few are traveling. Great service. Pool and jacuzzi.

This is the third time staying at El Cordova and each time was very pleasant. The rooms are clean, showers good and the beds are great. It looks like a Spanish village with some good restaurants and some nice shops. It’s right across the street from the “Del” so it’s easy to go to the beach or dinner/drinks there. The Mexican restaurant in El Cordova is really very good. Service was great and the people were nice and helpful. It’s a grate place to stay for the price that you pay.

We didn't want to leave and actually added an additional night to our stay. We found the hotel staff to be accomodating and friendly, especially the manager Josh. The room was charming, clean and most comfortable. We will most certainly be back for for return visit, probably with our entire family next time.

My colleague and I had business at North Island and needed a place to stay for a few nights. My colleague found El Cordova and made some reservations (he got a good rate through Orbitz). We wondered if we had made the right decision after reading some of the reviews here on Tripadvisor, but we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The gentlemen at the front desk was very polite and helpful. Check-in was very easy. Our rooms were huge.....we apparently got upgraded to their 1 bedroom suite. The room was nice and clean and the bed was very comfortable. Yes, the bathroom was small, but it was completely functional. The hotel is a converted mansion from the early 1900s so back then bathrooms weren't always huge. If you're expecting a modern hotel this is not the place for you, but if you like places with personality, then stay here. The location was great as you are right across the street from the Hotel Del and within easy walking distance of several restaurants, shops and coffee joints.
