The property clearly has a ton of history. However it is living on the history alone. The facility is showing its age and is in need of some attention. I expected it to have charm and elegance. The elegance was very much missing. Service at the property was poor. Long waits for drinks at the bar in the evening. Many heaters in the outside seating area did not work and staff could not get the portable units to work either. Overall a dissappointing experience. No plans to go back here with so many other options around San Diego.

A large but characterful hotel located on the lovely island of Coronado, San Diego. Known as the Del, it featured in the film Some like it Hot. I had a lovely large room overlooking one of the courtyards. It was very quiet until the jet aircraft (from the base where they filmed Top Gun) went over, which were deafening. Excellent facilities for a large sales meeting, although the conference rooms are spread out over a large area and some areas cannot be reached indoors from the main reception. Not a problem unless it rains, which it did when we were there. Food was typically American, but perfectly acceptable.
Highlights:
- Staff were very friendly and hard working
- Room I had was very large and well appointed
- Free internet in our package
- on the beach location
- close to excellent restaurants, bars and shops
- two great golf courses nearby
Lowlights:
- Breakfast
- Perhaps its size means it loses some intimacy
- Separate conference facilities

We came to the Beach Village at the Del after checking out early from another hotel in the San Diego area that we didn't really like. We looked around online and decided to splurge on a two bedroom cottage on the beach at Beach Village. The reservation person did a great job of answering our questions about the rooms they had available. When we arrived we were thrilled to see that our room was directly on the beach and had living room with a small kitchen and one king bedroom and another with two queens and a pull-out sofa, we had plenty of room for our family. We had great meals on the restaurant that is part of beach village and spent two nights dining by a fire pit watching the sunset, we also had breakfast included with our room each morning. One night we sat on the beach by a bonfire and roasted marshmallows. The whole experience was completely relaxing and lovely. The pools are nice and there are a few of them for the people staying at beach village, so you can have some privacy or swim in the larger pool in the center. The fitness center was nice and well equipped and they have a decent selection of classes and yoga. Staying at Beach Village is pricey, but views, accommodations and staff are incomparable. Every person we spoke with who works at the Hotel Del Coronado and at Beach Village was friendly, helpful and pleasant. We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: The cottages on the beach are lovely, but if you want more privacy the second floor would be better...

Stayed here for a work conference so unfortunately work was my main purpose. Wifi was sketchy across the hotel, this is because its such a big property. Also you can hear alot through the adjoining doors to the other rooms. I felt that I could have joined in with my neighbours phone calls home!
I stayed in the main building on the 3rd floor and sometimes when trying to get to and from the room quickly you are held up by alot of tourists taking pictures and wanting to hold the elevator. If I was on vacation I think this would have been less of a nuisance.

It did take a long time to be served in the bar and restaurant, again due to the volume of people stopping by. Also checking in, they only had one person on the desk. For a hotel of this size I would have expected 4 - 5 counters not just two and for them to be staffed.

On our free day we did get great service from the concierge on how to get around San Diego and where to go for food.

The gym is well equipped but got very busy. I liked the history of the place but would not pay to stay here myself.

My review is very late as I have been married for 6 years now BUT I've just joined trip advisor and had to say something about "The Del"

My husband and I were married on the beautiful beach in front of the Del. From the moment we arrived we were treated like royalty! The staff was AMAZING and they catered to our every wish. The accommodations were heavenly as we had a room that we literally walked out of our door and onto the soft sand towards the beach. It was clean and decorated beautifully.

The Buffet on Sunday was so memorable. It's pricey BUT FABULOUS and a must do!

The history of the hotel was fun to learn about and as history buffs, we took the tours and loved every minute. We took a ghost tour as well!!! FUN :) There is no place like this hotel!!

You will have an amazing time here! The beach cabanas with service were so luxurious and COMFY!! I wanted to stay a week longer ;)

I'll be honest and tell you at first I wanted to go somewhere more "tropical" with crystal clear blue water BUT this time my hubby knew what he was talking about because the Del has become a memory that I will never forget and we will always return here to celebrate our marriage.

We will probably be back this summer since our anniversary is 7-27-08. This isnt just a hotel.. its an experience you won't forget!

Thank you, Hotel Del!!!!! Sorry,

Room Tip: Get one of the rooms that have ocean front access! You will love being able to stroll out of your ro...

I came to San Diego years ago on business and had a drink by the pool overlooking the beach and always wanted to come back with my husband and stay at the hotel. We recently moved from NY to LA and made our way south for a weekend getaway. I was far from impressed with the chilly welcome. We stay at high end places when we travel and the front desk experience is always very telling. We paid extra for a coastal view room and when we got to our room, we faced the parking lot. Even tbe bellman joked that you would have to get on top of the desk to see the ocean. We were moved to the 5th floor with a hairline view of the water from the roof. The rooms are expensive and really not high end. No cotton balls or cutips in this hotel! We had lunch at the sheerwater restaurant. Food was average and service extremely slow. It was very crowded as the hotel faces a public beach so people stroll through hotel from outside. If you are looking for a quiet place, this is not it! It was crowded, noisy, not to mention they were rebuilding a pool area so the jack hammering was far from the quiet oasis i had imagined (not mentioned on the website that they were having construction). At dinner we had cocktails at the 1500 outside bar. Not a lot of selection but we got to enjoy the lovely sunset. Dinner at 1500 was great and our waiter very nice. Don't have the cappucino...dreadful!
Also, for a hotel of that size, no breakfast restaurants that serves a la carte in unexcusable! If you wanted breakfast, you had to have the buffet for $26...really?
It is a really beautiful building and really the only place to stay on the beach so no competition or many choices to pick from!

Room Tip: Go ocean front - if you are willing to pay more do not bother with coastal view! It is not what you...

My wife and I usually stay at upscale modern hotels, but I had always wanted to see the famous Del Coronado. We arrived on a Friday - it was busy, but not mobbed (that would change). The lobby is beautiful and has real Victorian Era charm. We had paid extra for a "Coastal View" Room but when we got up there, the view was a parking lot. Even the bellman said "Maybe if you stand on the desk you can see the coast." I called and they gave us another room - this one had at least a partial view of the water. I guess they thought we wouldn't complain! The room was on the 5th floor and was comfortable, I wouldn't call it "luxurious." Even though the hotel is over 100 years old, the room looked pretty modern. The beach is beautiful - but it does get crowded and the hotel has several functions going on. I was hoping to see crews of Navy SEALS jogging or carrying rafts - maybe they take the weekends off! For dinner the first night we tried 1500 - the food was good, although my wife ordered a cappucino which tasted terrible. The waiter took it off the bill. The next night we had drinks at a nice outdoor bar and people watched. There was a Navy Ball at the hotel so a lot of people in uniform, women were beautifully dressed. One cool thing the hotel did was hire a woman to walk the grounds in a black victorian outfit as the ghost of a guest who gave the hotel its "haunted" reputation. We ate breakfast at Sheerwater, their main restaurant - you couldn't order anything a la carte, they ONLY offered a $25 buffet - which was very well stocked and you could get omlettes to order. All in all it was a nice weekend in a historic place.

Room Tip: if you pay for a "Coastal View", upon check-in ASK what kind of view the room has before g...
