“Declining Quality”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

We have stayed at the Del for 20 years now. I regret to inform the readers that quality has seriously declined.
1. Newspaper is no longer delivered to the room. If you want one, you have to go to the front desk to get one. Yes, they are still free, but the walk to the front desk is a nuisance. And, the LA Times is in short supply. We don't read the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times when we are in Coronado.
2. No more free shuttle service to shopping areas. This was a tremendous amenity that is gone without a trace. The round trip cab ride now costs $50.00. Even getting a cab took forever.
3. No more live band on the Sun Deck. "Ron's Garage" played on the Sun Deck for years. No more. Gone and not replaced. What a loss! We would go to the Del just to listen to this band.
4. No more piano player in the lobby bar and no more lobby bar. The bar and the piano player disappeared a few years ago. The area is now dedicated to concierge service. The old concierge area by the front door is vacant. I am sure it will be retail space soon.
5. Our TV did not work for two days. "Connectivity issues" were blamed, but no TV in a luxury hotel? Unacceptable.
KSL resorts took over about 3 years ago and we have noticed a slow decline. This is our last year at the Del. The final straw was an invitation to join the "Club Del." The price made it a close call as to the value. The annual "administrative fee" on top of membership fee made it not worthwhile. The management refused to waive the "administrative fee." Call it what it is -- an extra charge! Treat your guests with some respect. We recognize a padded charge when we see one.
6. A hamburger on the Sun Deck is $15. The same hamburger at Sheer Water is $24.00. Do they think the guest won't notice? It is the same hamburger from the same kitchen! Other prices are just as out of proportion. Margarita on the Deck: $15. At Sheer Water: $22.00.
All in all, this was a disappointing experience for us. We came to expect the best when staying at the Del, and this time we just got the ordinary. Obviously management is more interested in cost shaving and saving than providing a quality experience to the guest.
I don't write negative reviews. This is my first. I regret that it is about a Hotel that we loved for so long. Step it up KSL before it is too late!

Room Tip: The ocean front rooms are the best, but you pay a premium price for them. The interior garden rooms...

Dear Leighton R,

We can't thank you enough for your tremendous loyalty to Hotel del Coronadoand are saddened by your disappointment during your stay. The resort is constantly evolving and we regret that certain changes are distressing for some of our guests. We did just completed a switch in our television services and we apologize for the inconvenience this caused. There is live entertainment in the B&S Bar and Ron’s Band plays nightly across the street from the resort. The Del burger served on the Sun Deck comes from the grill there and is different from the one served in Sheerwater. As for our Del Resort membership, the administrative fee covers a private membership reservation concierge. However, explanations aside, we're very troubled by your concerns and will take them into account as we examine our processes and policies in the future. We truly appreciate your feedback and hope that you will continue your tradition of staying at our beautiful and historic hotel. If there's anything we can do to make your next visit a more pleasant one, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

Dirty property, toilets bowls and seats are rusty and nasty. For $700 a night, expect much more. Bar and food prices overpriced, shrimp cocktail spongy, steaks averaged brunch buffet overpriced and average. Love the view and bay, my dollars are better spent in Del Mar. Changed rooms, was told I would get a call to move in, no call, paid full rate for getting in my room at 6:45 PM

Dear Mark C,

We are very concerned to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations or our high standards. There is simply no excuse for mediocre service, accommodations, or cuisine, particularly at a resort of our caliber. Your feedback is appreciated, and we will be taking steps to ensure these issues remain isolated. We know you are likely hesitant to return to The Del, but we hope you'll give us another chance to wow you.

We love Coronado. It's an amazing Island. This is our 3rd stay at The Del. We like it.
The Good:
1. Beach 2. Sunsets 3. Location 4.Staff 5. Buffet Breakfast (excellent & but pricey $75.00 for 2)

The Not So Good:
1. Self parking - $37 a day plus tax. At $400 a night for a room, parking shouldn't be this stiff.
2. Pet Friendly - animals don't belong staying in people hotels, ask for a non pet friendly room.
3. On Site Restaurants - expensive
4. Beach Extras - chair and umbrella for family of 4 will cost $100 a day. Bring your own or buy locally, will pay for itself in 1 day.

By far one of the nicest beaches you'll find. Between the sun, sand and surf it can't be beat. The staff was also very friendly.

The first room we were given was previously occupied by an animal of some kind and reeked. They immediately gave us another room (somewhat of a down grade across the hall no view) but would not give us a price adjustment which I found shortsighted. My wife is allergic to cats & dogs so be sure to ask if the room you're booking was pet friendly, it nearly turned our stay into a disaster.

To their credit, the reeking room we first had was shut down immediately and they were working on it for about a day before allowing another guest to check in.

At check out there were only 3 people working the reception desk on a Summer Saturday at around 12-1pm in July. Seems like they were understaffed to me and the other 6 hotel guests in line waiting. Took us 20 minutes to pay the bill (I think they don't have an express check out, or at least one that I was not made aware of upon check in).

Room Tip: Ask for NON PET FRIENDLY if you're allergic. nearly turned the stay into a disaster for my wife...

We loved everything about the Del! especially Andrew the elevator operator!! The rooms were very spacious and pretty! About the only thing I can say we didnt like was that there was only one bathroom to use in the whole entire place. so if you were at the beach, pool, restaurants you had a hike to the restroom. Also these bathrooms were used by the public and always had to wait in a long line, both mens and womens! Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: free water in room was nice and also mini fridge for soda or anything you bring.

Dear Michele C,

Thank you for your recent stay with us at Hotel del Coronado. It’s wonderful to hear that you had a fantastic summer vacation and experienced exceptional service. Andrew is a valued employee, and we will let him know to keep up the great work. There are three sets of restrooms in the historic building alone and we apologize for the inconvenience. The size of our historic hotel can sometimes make for a bit of a hike but your patience and understanding are appreciated. We hope you'll stay with us again soon.

It has been close to 15 years since my last visit to the Del and although some things have changed, it is still one of the top hotels in San Diego. The service is friendly and helpful, the qualify of the rooms and facility is still top notch. Our visit started with finding the self-parking lot full. The receptionist apologized and gave us the self-park rate for our entire visit, even though we had to valet. It was high tourist season and the quality of the visitors was not quite up to the quality of the hotel. I found myself overdressed most of the time, even though I was wearing shorts and a simple button down shirt. There were lines (especially for breakfast), but the staff was very helpful in mitigating the wait. We put our name down and was told there was a 25 minute wait for the buffet so we sat down in the bar to wait. A server came over and served us coffee and told us we could sit where we were and visit the buffet, allowing us to bypass the line entirely. We also observed the management pitching in to help bus tables, move furniture, etc. to mitigate the large crowds. Al-in-all, it was a great visit and we will visit again (albeit not in high tourist time).

Room Tip: I would probably stay away from the rooms on the lower floors. The lobby can be extremely noisy.

We stayed for five days at this hotel. I was there on business, and my wife and two boys accompanied me. We actually stayed in the rooms by the Ocean, which is nice in terms of the view, but we missed out on the actual magic of staying in the hotel proper. If I were to stay here again, I would stay in the original hotel. The hotel was very busy, as it was over in December. The hotel is located on the opposite end of the peninsula, so you have to walk a great distance to get to the ferry landing. The walk is a half hour if you hurry. You feel fairly isolated without a car. Don't take the hotel taxi service, as it is far more expensive than the taxi's that park outside the entrance (across the street) from the hotel. I would probably rent a car the next time. There are some shops at the hotel, and one can ice skate by the ocean during this season, if you so wish. It's not cheap, and I think I enjoyed my visits to this hotel more the other two times. On those occasions, we simply stopped by for a few hours for a couple of drinks. It's worth visiting just for the view of the Victorian structure, history, and Christmas decorations.

Room Tip: Stay in the hotel proper.

Dear Boyd B,

Thank you for your review and your loyalty to The Del. We are pleased your family could join you on your most recent five-night stay. It sounds like our iconic architecture and rich history are your primary interests when visiting, and we hope to give you a better sense of both in the future. We are already counting down the days to the holiday season, because we love the decorations as much as you do.

We hope you'll join us again, even if just for a drink. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Loved it, thought it was absolutely beautiful! The history, the charm, the location, the service, the food and drink all just fabulous. We enjoyed the wonderful breakfast buffet each morning and also the beach service. Rooms were well appointed and comfortable. One day we were ablleto watch the Navy Seals conduct training on the beach in front of the hotel. There aren't many places that can offer that!
