“Chutney? Ok!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2013

The sushi at Saiko was yummy! They have a very short menu, however, the signature rolls they offered were very good. I ordered one with a fennel chutney on top and it was delish. Fish was sliced to order for the rolls and the prices were reasonable for a tourist town.

“Excellent food and service in clean restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2013

My family of three sat at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs were engaging and easy to converse with while they were working. The sushi was awesome! Very fresh and good. The servers were great. The restaurant is very clean….including the bathrooms. Great sushi experience!

“Good for the money but SoCa has many better options”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2013

Tried this with a colleague on a recent trip to San Diego. It was a Sunday night which is not usually the ideal time for a any Sushi meal. (The fish is from Friday earliest and the best stuff sold on Friday-Saturday). We were seated promptly at the bar (not the sushi bar). The service was generally prompt and attentive. The decor was kinda of cool and the place seemed very clean. The house salad with a ginger dressing was far above the typical miso-ginger salad found in most sushi restaurants and recommended. We has sashimi and a couple of their special roles. The roles and fish were pretty reasonably priced if somewhat unremarkable for Southern California. I gave it an extra "star" for the salad, pricing and service but found the fish to be a bit disappointing.

“Better than the Burger King.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2013

Coming off the ferry, I had a choice between American fare or an exotic menu. I decided on the sushi.

Atmosphere: College town. Unpretentious. Casual.

Service: Fast and friendly. Small letter warning that it could take up to 45 minutes to make a roll during a busy day. On midday evening, the place was packed but the wait for the food was not bad (<10min.)

Tip: order soup and appetizer to bridge the time gap.

Sat at the sushi bar. Did not like sitting where customer had to look up. Style defeats the purpose of an open kitchen where the patron is supposed to watch what the chefs are cooking. For all I know the roll could come from the Albertsons on B Avenue.

Miso soup had decent cubes of tofu and several strips of seaweed. Good salty taste and piping hot.

The Izakaya chicken fingers might be a copy of the KFC menu, complete with mustard. The tempura flash fried the chicken and gives it a nice crispiness. I would switch the condiment to something more original.

The Ace roll contains tuna, albacore tartar and a tempura shishito pepper. The tuna was very thin and lean. Would prefer a more fatty tuna but it might be a sign of the times. The tempura gave the sushi bite a nice crunchiness.

Missing: better tea selection. Green and black, hot and cold.

Missing 2: more soba choices. buckwheat or else, hot and cold.

Missing 3: Would like a bento box selection. Understand that is offered during lunch.

Missing 4: Did not see a dessert menu. I will take a sake ice cream...

Check please: Clever twist on the standard sushi roll. Limitations on the menu are tempered with reasonably priced selections.

“Best Sushi”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2013

They definitely have on of the best sushis around San Diego. We have been there and ordered food to take out several times and were always fully satisfied. The rolls are really really great and you definitely get a great value for your money. They also have happy hour but it is also worth to go there during "normal" hours.
