The Loews Coronado Bay Resort on Coronado Island in California is a warm and inviting setting for real rest and relaxation. The resort is set a few miles out from the center of the town of Coronado on thin strip of land along Silver Stand Beach. Due to this setting, guests can enjoy a choice of beach side ocean waters on one of the most beautiful beaches along the pacific and a relaxing poolside environment on the resort property. The beach can be accessed via a short walking trail or an escorted golf cart ride by one of the friendly staff, who will also assist you in getting chairs and umbrellas set up for your beach outing. The rooms are spacious and reasonably priced and the staff is warm, friendly and engaging. Some who visit Coronado tend to think first of the hotel Del, but the rooms at the Del are small, expensive and the hotel attracts many tourists who aren’t even guests. The last time I visited there, the crowds would have almost matched Disney Land on its busiest day. I for one, can do without crowds on vacation.
One of the best things about the Loews is the layout of three pools – one just for adults – and the amazing poolside staff that provide all one needs for a relaxing time. The food is fun and comforting and the cocktails are mixed just right. I really enjoyed their BLTTA, which is a bacon lettuce and turkey sandwich with avocado, their foot long hot dog & tots and if you’re staying at the resort on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the fresh tacos made poolside are a must. The poolside staff is fantastic! They are upbeat and friendly and happy to do anything they can to make your stay special. Their fearless leader, Elyse, sets the tone for this high level of service, as she will go to great lengths to help with anything you need and truly enjoys being in hospitality. Special shout outs go to Elena, Franklin and Katie, who exude warmth and high energy. Franklin in particular is the kind of person you just want to hug. I’ve never seen anyone so happy to make others happy. It’s real gift.
In addition to the pool, the resort offers many opportunities for great food. The Market Café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a casual setting and Chef Leland makes meals that are both comforting and creative. The Thursday night meatball with bacon is a must! The Market to Go is open 24/7 and has a lot of tasty choices to offer. After dinner, swing by for milk and one of their awesome sweets. I went on for the donuts holes and red velvet cupcake and my wife had a couple of their huge cookies. After a day of R&R at the pool or on the beach, a cocktail at the Cay’s Lounge is a must. There are tables inside and out, but we really love the lower level outside where the tables also serve as fire pits that keep you warm and cozy in the evening breeze. The bar has a nice selection of cigars that can be enjoyed only on the lower level area, but it’s a peaceful way to embrace the evening ahead. We enjoyed a couple of dinners at Mistral, which is their high-end restaurant one level up from the lobby. If you dine around sunset, you’ll enjoy gorgeous views of the bay from any table. Chef Adam Cho really has a passion for food and you can tell by the menu. On our first night we enjoyed a yellowtail & white peach Crudo with candy cane beets, finger lime & cilantro. Entrees were a seafood paella and a California striped bass with squid ink risotto and Meyer lemon butter. For desert, we split the lime crepe cake with citrus cream & griotte cherries soaked in bourbon (pictures below). For our second meal there, we went back again for the yellowtail crudo, as well as the duck & waffle, arctic char and forest mushrooms. All were amazing!! Dave & the darling Magaly took care of us both nights and they went to great lengths to ensure we had a special dining experience.
The success of our visit to the Loews starts with Executive Assistant, Daniela Miguel and Concierge par excellence Gordon Berry (everyone calls him Gordy). They are the gracious ambassadors of the Loews Resort and do their part to make you feel so welcome. When we arrived, Gordy saw us going up to our room and made a point of coming over to greet us. Gordy is a true gentleman, who beams warmth, personality and elegance. Daniela helped make a variety of arrangements for us and even stopped by the pool one day to say hi and make sure we were enjoying our stay. That’s service you can’t find just anywhere.
Depending on how long your stay is, you may want to venture into the town of Coronado, and even that is ridiculously simple. Just call the valet to schedule a seat on the free shuttle that drops you in the center of town. Give them a call when you’re ready to return and they will let you know what time to meet the shuttle going back. The town offers other great dining options, a fun retro movie theater and a great candy shop with old style penny candy from times past. We love our stays at the Loews and will return again. If you’re looking for a peaceful setting and chance to truly unwind on Coronado Island, look no further than the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. You won’t be disappointed!!
