“Gorgeous hotel right across the street from the beach”
Reviewed 13 March 2009

I stayed here last summer and absolutely loved it. I have nothing to complain about. I loved that there was a passage under the highway to get to the beach. (Perfect for people with children - no need to worry about them being run over.) The beds were super comfortable and we had a pretty large bathroom as well.

I stayed at The Loews back in September last year, and had already visited twice before. It is truly one of the most special and welcoming hotels I have ever had the privilege of staying at.
The hotel is all about fine lines; staff who are friendly, but not over familiar, luxurious facilities and service, without being ostentatious. Rooms are well decorated and have excellent views across the bay, along with private patios. The less formal restaurant within the hotel became a personal favourite for breakfast, lunch and dinner - fairly priced with a great range of locally sourced produce.
The poolside is pure bliss, and the shuttle service to the beach is a godsend! We rented jet skis, surfboards and took advantage of pretty much every activity the hotel offered (of which there are lots!).
Downsides are: the hotel is somewhat secluded on the Coronado Spit, therefore getting to the town centre usually requires a taxi ride (which add up). However, it's a wonderful place to return to after shopping in San Diego all day. l will certainly be returning very soon indeed!

I recently stayed at this nice resort over Valentine's day. My husband surprise me witha nice getway to Cornardo. Very nice hotel and isolated from downtown Cornardo. The hotel gave us a nice view of the cornardo lake. Room services was excellent. Also staff service was great too. No problems with them. They also offer plenty of activities to do. I highly recommend this hotel. In addition, pets are allowed in this hotel too.

We loved our stay at the Loews. While it was "off the beaten path", we are still glad we chose it. The room was bright, large and most importantly clean. The bed was a awesome (and we are picky). We had a room overlooking the pool with a little balcony. The bathroom was huge with a seperate tub and shower. Some tiles needed to be replaced and the shower door leaked, no biggie.
There was some kind of a mix up with our key not working on day 3 of our 4 night stay, but it was fixed.
We didn't eat at the hotel, but the drive into Coronado was only about 10 minutes. And we did have pizza delivered.
The hotel is on a Marina. And there appeared to be several stores and at least 3 restaurants.
Staff were so eager to please. We were treated great.
Lastly the Concierge was great. She booked a couple things for us and was eager to please.

We had a wonderful time in San Diego for our family vacation, and this hotel is a solid choice for a family destination. We stayed in a suite, with the adults sleeping in the master king bedroom and our two children (ages 7 and 10) slept on the living room sofa. The room was spacious and clean, with flat screen tvs and a DVD player provided on request. The bathroom was large; one caveat for "sharing" -- unlike the suites in some other higher-end resorts, the toilet was not in a private space, making it stressful for the family at times. A couple of times, our son "sped off" to use the public bathroom down the hallway. There was a substantial deck, and we had a lovely view of the marina and bay. Our kids enjoyed the "kids club", which seemed more ad hoc and less structured than at other resorts (e.g., group babysitting was held in a meeting room rather than in its own space). The grownups appreciated the Starbucks coffee at the coffee bar and the spacious and clean spa. We all enjoyed the pool area and outdoor ping pong tables. The food (room service) and the Market Cafe was "fine"; the local fruit was delicious. My husband and I found Mistral, the hotel's signature restaurant, to be "good." but not "spectacular." Overall, the staff was very helpful, especially Erica, one of the concierges. However, as with every hotel stay, there were "glitches": e.g., room service mistakes; missed turn-down service; a discombobulated breakfast situation (it appears the Market Cafe is short-staffed); delayed housecleaning. The gym needs an elliptical machine and the equipment is in high demand (often we had to wait to use the treadmills, etc). The $22 daily parking charge is ridiculous. Coronado Village is lovely and a short drive away; street parking there seemed plentiful. It's easy to get to places of interest (such as Legoland, the Zoo, Gaslamp, the airport, etc.) from Coronado. In short: if you can get a favorable rate or package, this is a "good" hotel, but management could run a tighter ship, particularly for the expense of staying here.

My husband suprised me with a getaway weekend to Coronado Island for my birthday--where we had our wedding 5 years ago (but at a different hotel). When we first checked in early evening, we had an amazing room with a view of the bay, but upon entering, the people working there were still cleaning the room--it smelled heavily of cigarette smoke. The staff immediately changed our rooms and actually gave us a few options with the type of room (all down-graded however and no view). My husband had to sort out the situation with making sure that he was not being charged extra for a room without a view. They comped our breakfast instead. The room itself was clean with a beachy feel. The staff was friendly and attentive. Some of the guests seemed a bit stuffy. I know it requires a good amount of money to spend at a hotel like this, but good manners should still be in check.

  • Liked — the location
  • Disliked — the room was not ready for us when we arrived at 8:00 p.m.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night in October to celebrate my birthday. We had spent the day at the Miramar Air Show with my parents and were looking forward to relaxing after the long day. The hotel is beautiful and you can't beat the views of the water. However, our check-in was a nightmare. My boyfriend had booked the room through Expedia, which I would NOT recommend. The reservation was made a week in advance but Loews didn't have any record of it. We arrived after the business center was closed so we couldn't access the internet to look up our confirmation number. The first girl we spoke with at the desk was rather brusque and finally allowed us to use a computer in their back office to look up the reservation. We showed her the proof that we actually had a reservation. She had to call another person (I assume it was a manager) to help us. In the meantime, other guests were showing up and we got shoved to the side. The manager gave us a couple free drink coupons for the bar to placate us while we waited. Calls to Expedia were worthless; they blamed the problem on Loews. It took almost 45 minutes and some angry words between my boyfriend and the girl at the desk before things were resolved. The manager ended up giving us about 8 free drink coupons and upgraded us to a deluxe suite. Once we finally got to the room, it was amazing. The suite was huge and the view was incredible, literally feet from the water. We had a huge balcony with a view of the Coronado bridge. We had no problems after the initial check-in but for just one night, the hassle was irritating. Like I said before, if you're planning to stay here don't make reservations through Expedia. If you do, call Expedia AND Loews to make sure they have your reservations.
