Camp Layman is the type of place that you remember from childhood, or wish you'd had the opportunity to attend when you were a kid. It's reminiscent of the 50s rather than being the latest hot spot. Located in a canyon on the Feather River, it's got a couple of rows of cabins facing each other with a community fire pit in the middle, and a few scattered other cabins. My sister and I stayed in one that was small and basic, but clean and perfectly adequate, with nicely working appliances, good shower and so on. The proprietors, Shelly and Dan are extremely friendly, generous and helpful. This is a place to swim, hike, play volleyball, shuffleboard, ping pong, horseshoes, and board games rather than watching the boob tube. They have big fat inner tubes for floating down the river on, and a lovely dog named Samantha. It's a great place for group gatherings and for creating yearly family traditions. Plus, it's located near the fabulous Lakes Basin in the northern Sierras, which has hikes and views that are right up in the top ten gorgeous places on the planet!
One thing to know is that trains go by across the river and can occasionally be loud at night.
