“Excellent north indian vegetarian food”
Reviewed 20 August 2012 via mobile

Bawarchi has excellent north Indian food, or a reasonable cost. Do not miss their missi roti, tikki chat and mirchi ka salan.

We always land up eating too much.

I like the rotis better than the naan. The chai is nice too, but it's a huge portion.

“small price, big flavour!”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

yes, Bawarchi is right next to Mayura, and down the street from Annapurna -- but it absolutely holds its own. yes, it's kind of tiny and is dominated by the food counter -- but the eating space is still pretty classy, and big points for using such nice dishes, even if you are handed them on a plastic tray (which will be whisked away immediately if you like). and yes, the service peeps in there are really nice, and the chef himself will maybe even serve you. but the killer combo fact about Bawarchi -- the one that merits 5 stars: EIGHT DOLLARS GETS YOU A WHOLE LOTTA FLAVOUR.

see, you get your choice of rice. your choice of naan. a nice green salad. all-you-can-scarf pickles/seasoned onions. and pappadum. and raita. and then THREE vegetables. but wait! these aren't just "veggies." these are more like "bowls of full tasty pleasure that involve excellent textures, delicious flavours, and creative combinations." if you are lucky enough to be there with another person, that's six potential bowls of yummyness. if you're there with more than that...oooh, the mind reels.
look, i am not a vegetarian at all, but i love to eat here because the tastes and choices are so great. the lentils are fresh. the soy "chicken" or "fish" tastes/feels more like chicken or fish than some "real" chicken or fish served in certain fast-food joints. the sauces are complex and have a pleasant consistency. the roasted jackfruit or lotus root is a good example of the sort of off-the-beaten-path choices you have.
did i mention that the chai is only a buck fifty and has unlimited FREE REFILLS? now i did.

bottom line: Bawarchi is an incredible value, with nothing sacrificed for quality of taste or creativity in cuisine. they're open everyday from 11am-10pm, and they do accept credit cards. look for it in the corner of a strip mall on Venice at Motor. parking lot is small, but there always seems to be a space open.

“Best Indian Food in the West”
Reviewed 21 June 2011

I moved into the neighborhood recently and am glad I found this place. Being an Indian myself, I find the food to be authentic and delicious. The buffet has several curries (14 choices I believe) to choose from. The combo comes with naan(garlic, whole wheat, roti), rice(saffron pulao, brown rice) a salad and choice of any three vegetable curries from the buffet. I have tried six of the curries and everything tasted amazing. The owner himself who is the chief cook makes sure you like the food and also provides some suggestions for desserts. The dessert - shrikhand was mindblowing! They have the infamous kulfi which comes in a matki ( a clay pot). Overall, it was a great experience. i will definitely be coming back!
