“Impersonal service, tired food, expensive, smoke”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We had hoped for a special experience for our anniversary. Other locations in this corporate chain restaurant had been a very positive, if formulaic, experience. This time we went for the view.

Summary - staff seemed to have their minds on other things, the food was mostly disappointing, we had to move tables because of cigarette smoke, waiter was overly loud and perfunctory.

Our table was booked ahead by the Blue Lantern Inn, and since we were running 10 mins late for our reserved time, we called ahead. "No problem". When we arrived, the greeter muttered something about, "We have gone to open seating". We had lost the window seat because we were 10 mins late (even though we had called). They seated us one row back, but the intimacy had been lost.

As we sat there, we became aware of an overpowering presence of cigarette smoke. I asked a server if the restaurant allowed smoking. She said, "Oh, no. That is coming from the smoking area." That area was right outside an open restaurant door, and coming straight in. We asked to be moved and ended up an almost viewless concrete booth.

Our server Cory appeared, with a penetrating voice that would befit an ESPN announcer. He seemed rushed, and that his mind was not on our table while he was talking with us. He ran through the menu at a speed, then disappeared. His attention during the course of the evening was minimal, and we never felt we had his undivided attention, even when he was talking with us.

Opening drinks, Kir Royale, were pleasant. Although the champagne was flat, as if from the last of an opened bottle, the flavor was very nice.

The food was a mixed bag. "Calamari and Friends" was probably the dullest calamari I can remember. I love calamari, and have tasted some that was beautifully done. Chart House failed on this one. It was flavorless, tired, and not tender. The Coconut Crunchy Shrimp was OK, not brilliant, but pleasant enough. The Herb Crusted Salmon - salmon nicely done, tender and tasty, not overdone. The Herb Crust was soggy and underdone. Would have returned it but our server was nowhere in sight.

The Lava Cake dessert was wonderful. The Blue Lantern Inn, where were staying, had covered the cost of this for our anniversary (thanks).

And on top of this, one of the servers was doing a loud, repetitive and very long sales pitch preso to the next booth about the advantages of their corporate rewards program. His main selling point was just how many properties the parent company owned.

Time to leave. Quite a wait for our server, then we left without any of the staff (who were just standing around) bidding us a goodnight.

Overall feeling - dining experience was adequate, impersonal, expensive. Would not go back there.

Next night we went to Cannons next door and had great service, lovely food, and a stunning view.

“Stunning Views, Average food”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I saw the views and reviews before I went. My thought was a restaurant on realestate that valuable has got to be good to sustain being there... Well, the food was average and the service was better than reviews i had read. The view and breeze were Califorinia Coast Line as one would expect and be searching for.

I honestly do not understand how they are still open. The only thing great about this Chart House is the view. The service was rushed and anything but good. The steaks were well below average and not cooked correctly.

“great location, poor service, average food”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

The location is wonderful, with a nice view over the harbor and a terrace. Food was average and fine. The service was distracted and unreliable, brought several wrong orders, miscalculated the bill. Wheelchair access is poor. Improve your service, chaps and this would be recommendable.
