Tired, weary and thirsty from a long coast to coast flight my husband and I stumbled upon Tavern On The Coast. We were a bit apprehensive at first seeing it was late for dinner and not too crowded. Our fears were quickly alleviated by Mr. Massood Ghalami, the General Manager. He offered us a table. We asked if could sit at the bar."Sure, sure", where ever you are comfortable. Something light to go with a glass of wine was our wish. The flat bread Margaritta was delicious and perfect for the lateness of the hour. We chatted with Mr.Ghalami catching up on the area and its growth. He wished us well and asked us to come again. Two days later after an early dinner at a friends residence we didn't wish to return to our hotel too early and decided to seek out the pleasant home away from home atmosphere of the Tavern. Not only did Mr.Ghalami remember us in the midst of a busy dinner hour but had our waiter Brendan bring us a piece of their delicious cheesecake. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay in California longer so we could frequent the Tavern more, certainly a gem in the area.

This is the second time I've been to The Tavern On The Coast, but it's anything but the place you'd think of by the name Tavern. No, that it really isn't, it's an upscale place with a somewhat sophisticated modern feel and a restaurant that I suppose thinks of itself as Southern California's version of New York's old Tavern on the Green. The worst thing about the place is the absolutely awful back parking lot and rear corner single glass door entryway, if you can find it. There's no real sign out there and what there is reminds me of what you'd hand construct if you were going to be running a yard sale for the weekend. It's the worst entry point to a high priced restaurant I've ever seen or experienced. You'd think after a year or two they'd come up with a properly identifiable entry, it looks more like a service entry door than the main one. You half expect to see the kitchen interior when you open it. When you do they greet you warmly like you would expect for such an establishment, but it's an odd experience to say the least.

It's a modern decor created out of glass and light woods, with crisp white table linens. There's a nice patio, which has a large stone fireplace (unlit in summer of course) and a dozen tables, a couple of which are around the corner on the front of the building overlooking PCH. We decided to sit inside because it was late in the day and the breezes were already a little too cool on the patio. Our server was Amy and she did a fine job making us feel comfortable, taking our drink order, and providing the menus. We both ordered margaritas ($11) and I ordered an appetizer Soup du Jour, which was a Mexican tortilla soup ($8) that was outstanding. It was all freshly cut vegetables in a chicken broth with crispy tortilla strips, the best soup of its type I've ever had anywhere.
We ordered the grilled Wild Salmon ($33) and Pasta Artichoke ($19). The salmon was a nice piece and carefully cooked to order, with spinach and a small amount of mashed potato. The pasta artichoke was somewhat of a disappointment only because the pesto sauce was too strong and overwhelmed the delicate flavors of pasta and artichoke hearts. Unless you really like pesto a lot, don't order it. The pasta was perfectly cooked and served in a generous large bowl. After dinner we ordered a couple of coffees ($4) and sat enjoying the scene for a while.
I'd have to say the staff and management are obviously trying very hard, but are somewhat handicapped by the poor location on a one way section of PCH, and the price point the owners have chosen to occupy. Without any sign on the back of the building near the hard to find entry, you sure don't feel like you're entering an upscale environment for a $100 dinner for two, and first impressions do count in the restaurant business.

From the warm greeting at the door, and ending with a delicious dessert, I can't say enough about everything in between!
We have dined here a few times before and decided now it's time to write a review and share our "new favorite place" in Dana Point.
During our most recent visit we started with the homemade chicken soup and a bowl of steamed clams served with fresh baked garlic bread. Delicious!
For our entree's we opted for one of the Chefs Daily specials. Fresh, and we know fresh fish, wild caught halibut. Cooked to perfection and served with garlic mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus. I went with Fish and Chips. Again, fresh (Alaskan Cod) beer battered, fried to crispy perfection and served with hot fresh fries ( I'm a bit** about my fries) and a lite coleslaw. Both meals were served in a timely manner and so Delicious!
We don't frequent splurging on dessert, but our servers tempting suggestions of fresh carrot cake and the cooked to order beignets reeled us in for an indulgent and decadent way to end a fabulous meal.
On our next visit we want to try the Short Rib Lasagna and Chicken Porcini. The table next to us was raving about them. I almost asked for a bite.......
Overall, I highly recommend Tavern on the Coast. If you are in search of a warm and welcoming atmosphere,(there is also a nice patio with heaters and a fireplace), great food and excellent service, look no further. You have found the place!

One of a number of "newcomers" to Dana Point that missed the mark. Better off going to Mc D's and throwing $20 bills in the parking lot as you drive away for the same experience. A location only the tax man would love this no view, overpriced eaterie will leave you wishing you went somewhere else.

Had dinner here last Friday night - we made a reservation and they had the table ready right when we got there. The wait staff was great - and the food was delicious. Lots of specials, lots of great fish and the canoli for desert were really fabulous. This was our 3rd (and I thought final) dinner here, but the improvement is so good that we will go again! Our previous dinners were nothing short of disasters - no reservation, cocktails served with the entree - just horrible, but now it is a whole new place. Good thing we tried it again!
