“Great 2-4-1's on Tues.& Weds. 25 cent beer Thurs.”
Reviewed 28 January 2012

Tues.-Get 2- $7 taco plates for $3.50 each. Must buy 2, but chose from fish, carne asada, chicken, pork or shrimp or 2 burgers for price of 1. Weds.- 2 Baja Chicken platters(half a chicken each)for $10. Thurs.- 25 cent drafts w/$9 food order. I have been there a few times and the food is decent with a great atmosphere. Dana Point is a nice small seaside town.

“Average and filling Fare....but not so Irish.”
Reviewed 31 October 2011

Now it is true that one may suggest that my opinion of an Irish Pub has been somewhat tainted by my adventures overseas. However, I am anxious to find an establishment in the U.S. that has both Shamrocks on the door and the reflective atmosphere inside.

While the food at Hennessy’s was average to maybe just above average the ambiance was nothing more than that typical “Americanized” Irish Pub that has become such commonplace. Upon perusing the menu I was disappointed to not find Sheppard’s Pie or Fish and chips. To their credit I did find out later that they did offer both items but on the dinner menu. We had only been presented with the lunch choices. This again has now become commonplace and that baffles me as the quality of those concoctions, along with the very rare Beef and Guinness Pie, is what draws me nigh to an establishment of Irish nature.

Our lovely server was prompt and friendly but on the second round forgot to inquire as to whether I required a 2nd Guinness (oops). Upon correcting this grievous oversight she eventually returned with a just above room temperature can (double oops). This brings up another good point: Any proprietor that operates with claim to Irish lineage and does not serve Guinness or Kilkenny’s on tap should in the least be brought before the Friendly Sons and to account for his or her actions.

Now on to some positives: The place was quite large and had a large amount of clientele. The outdoor portion of the bar was being led in its revelry by a very loud and somewhat talented band. When the door was opened to the outside an unholy din assaulted the ears of the interior inhabitants but only for a second and actually did more to bring our attention to the comedic happenings of the inebriated crowd. Overall it was a good experience as it was a day spent on the backs gleaming motorcycles and in the company of great friends.

Lastly I would like to say that if you are like me and long for the dark oak and woody smelling pubs that adorn the Streets of Kowloon, Sydney or the Emerald Isle herself, with the exception of a few and far between spots your search here stateside may often be fraught with disappointment. Keep looking though and spread the word when you happen upon such a gem.

See you on the trail and remember, don’t be one of “those.”
