“The Ladies at the Ritz - Excellence, once again!”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

Director of Guest Services, Clarita Parra and Club Level Supervisor, Penni Garcia (along with Penni’s crew on the Club Level) have once again, made us feel so special and so welcomed during our visit last month. Clarita personally greeted us when we checked in and escorted us to the Club Level - where we were again greeted so warmly by Penni, who remembered us from our previous visit in 2010. Both Clarita and Penni told us they were working the weekend of our visit and we got the sense that working the weekends was neither a chore nor just a job for them, but that they really enjoyed taking care of people and making sure they helped ensure that we had the full “Ritz experience”.

The Club Level at the Ritz is such a wonderful way to experience the Ritz because it’s like knowing someone is there taking care of you during your entire stay. My husband compared it to visiting a favorite relative who is always happy to see you and wants to do everything they can to make you comfortable. You can go for a jog on the beach and know that breakfast will be waiting for you upon your return. You can come back after a lovely dinner and know that dessert and wine will be offered by the fireplace. It’s welcoming, without being “stuffy”. There’s even a special Supervised area for kids so parents can enjoy a little time alone.

The Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel is a sprawling property, with impeccably manicured grounds; yet it’s an intimate place - where their main mission is that you have a comfortable, relaxing experience. If you are looking for the newest, flashiest hotel in Southern California, this is not it. This is however a sanctuary for those who want the feel of a real beach vacation with a sense of “posh”. Subtle, yet important touches such as the fresh flowers in the lobby, the choice of music played in the Ritz’ main restaurant or the fire pits overlooking the ocean at 180blu all help create a wonderful ambience. Most importantly, it’s the people such as Clarita and Penni that make the Ritz the oasis it has been for us for the past several years. We can’t imagine our summers without it!

We are honored to receive such a glowing review, thank you! We agree with you...Clarita and Penni are tremendous assets to our our leadership team. Guests just like you continue to return to our resort just to see their friendly, warm faces. We are very proud of them and also our entire Club team. They are the real reason why our Club has been rated #1 in our company by our guests for four consequetive years. We look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

Just back from a 4 day beach break. We broke up our trip with a night in San Diego so had first an ocean front and then a garden view room. It is definitely worth spending the extra for a full ocean view as that is the main draw of this hotel. There is a whole set up on the terrace for sundowners with cocktails and sushi - arrive early to get a seat but if not, the indoor bar has wonderful sunset views too. Surfing lessons are a must, lots of fun and the concierge can set you up with a local teacher. Valet staff were also super welcoming and helpful, we also loved the wine and chocolate/cheese bar. Despite all this, it just didn't feel up to the same standard as some other Ritz properties (stayed at Dove Mountain and Grand Cayman also this year).

Room Tip: Spend the extra for an ocean front

Thank you for sharing your wonderful expereince. We couldn't agree more that each of Ritz-Carlton properties have their own, special feeling that reflects the uniqueness of each area of the world that they are placed in. That is what makes each of our hotels and resorts so special. We look forward to your next visit.

Stayed with my family for a long weekend. The property is spectacular. The views are unreal, as are the flowers and the landcaping. For the most part, the service can't be beat -- everywhere, from the restuarants, to the valet (the best valet I've ever experienced -- fast, friendly) to the bell service. All really top notch. There are, however a few negatives, one really big.

For the smaller negatives -- the rooms are tired. Walls scratched, tub wouldnt drain, one sink had a slow drain. No coffee set up in room, and the minibars have all been emptied in favor of a market-shop in the lobby. That was fine, but why leave the old, empty mini bar in the closet with a note saying "this is not a refrigerator". Not very Ritz Carlton-like.

Now, for the really big negative. This is a pet friendly hotel. I did not realize that until after we checked in and saw dogs everywhere. It was not mentioned at all during check in. During our stay, they held one of thier periodic YAPPY Hours, where hundreds of local and guest dogs take over the Dana Lawn for 4 hours for a party. Before and after the Yappy Hour, the dogs take over the valet, lobby, etc. Unfortunately, our room was right over the Dana Lawn, and the event made our balcony and room unusable for that time becuase of the barking and the view of pooping dogs. The real issue is that they do not enforce the dog rules. For example, dogs are not allowed in the pool areas. However, during family movie night, one guest's dog was more interested in my kids popcorn than the movie. One afternoon, a dog that had been allowed to remain in the pool area pooped at the edge of the pool while we were eating lunch. Gross. Of course, as soon as that happened, they ushered the dog away, and as descretely as possible cleaned the mess, but that was too late. The next day we decided to play vollyball and bocce on the Dana Lawn. Unfortunately, even though there is a "pooper scooper" rule, we stepped in dog poop in two spots on what is otherwise a lovely lawn. We also noticed dogs peeing in the pool deck near the Dana grill -- where lunch is served.

I applaud thier efforts to be pet friendly, and for the most part the dogs in residence were friendly and not an issue. However, the few offenders spoiled it for us. At +$700 a night per room, I should not have to watch dogs poop. I do not fault the dog owners -- rather the hotel management. First, we should have been told at check in (or better yet, at time of reservation) that it is VERY pet friendly and that there would be a Yappy Hour outside our room. Second, the staff should enforce the pet rules.

In fairness to the management, I did not make one negative complaint -- and I am certain that if I did it would have been tended to immediately. In fact, despite these negatives, we loved the place. But, you shouldnt have to complain at a Ritz Carlton!

Thank you for your detailed comments. We have taken your feedback to heart and have shared it with our team. Our rooms will soon be undergoing many enhancements over the next year that we are very excited about. We know you will love the changes. In response to your feedback regarding dogs, we host a very successful event once a month (during summer only) called Yappy Hour. It is a wonderful outreach (a complimentary event) to our local community. Being that our beaches and walkways are all public spaces and not private, we of course welcome all. A signifcant portion from the food and beverage sales at the event are donated to the Pet Project which benefits animal shelters in our local area. We look forward to assisting you again in the future.

I would recommend you book early to get one of the lovely rooms that over look the Pacific Ocean, however if you don’t you can enjoy the awe-inspiring sunsets from any of the many balconies, Adirondack chairs or benches that adore the property.
We dined at Raya, the food was brilliant; prepared and presented with perfection. Wine from the dining lounge 180blu, with panoramic views could not be better.
Be prepared to pay the price for a stay at this elegant hotel, the customer service was superb. The receptionist that greeted us upon our arrival was informative and genuine.

The hotel is about a 10-15 minute drive from Laguna Beach, perched over the ocean.Twelve members of our family stayed at the Ritz to attend a wedding in nearby Laguna Beach. Some of us on the Club floor suites and others in standard rooms. Overall impressions: Location is excllent, service is impeccable with staff always willing to go the extra mile to satisfy; facilities are extensive and there is something for everyone. There were many families staying at the hotel at the time and some with little children. That suited us as we had with us our 10 month old grand-son however it may not be everyone's cup of tea. I expect mid-summer is peak season and the hotel may be a little quieter in other periods.
Two caveats to an overall good stay: The rooms I saw are a bit dated and could stand a re-fresh. They were clean and spacious but the carpets, furniture looked a little tired. The second point for other travellers to note is that there are a lot of stairs outside the hotel to get to the public beach. This can be tricky with a stroller as well as for older folk like me!
Would we return, yes, but probably not in July. Town is very busy and parking in Laguna Beach is problematic.

Thank you for choosing our resort as your destination to attend the wedding. We remember you and your family and are delighted you enjoyed yourselves. We do have a soft renovation of in-room amenities that will be taking place this fall and winter. We are very excited for that and look forward to sharing our new room enhancements with you soon. Please remember the next time you return that we have shuttle service for you to and from the beach so you do not have to endure all of those stairs!

It is so sad that the one thing that makes this hotel less than perfect is quite an important thing to most people. First off, let me say that this wonderful hotel is definitely worth the price. The ocean view room is spectacular with full ocean views and plenty of space in the bedroom and bathroom. We stayed on the club level and it is SUPERB. Everyone at the hotel is helpful and kind, and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and taken care of. We are big believers in customer service and the service here is remarkable. The food, location, service, pools, beach, spa - literally everything - has been wonderful. We are seasoned travelers and always stay at upper echelon properties, and in our opinion, this hotel is the best place to stay in all of Southern California for a beach vacation. Here is the heartbreaking part... The hotel allows smoking on the patios of the rooms. Our stay was ruined when on the last day, a heavy smoker checked in to the room beneath us. Our room started to smell like an ashtray and we could no longer leave our patio door open. No longer being able to hear the sound of the crashing waves or enjoy the fresh sea breeze ruined my love affair with the Ritz. If you smoke, you obviously wont mind this. For the rest of us who like to breath air untainted by deathly cancerous poison, beware that you could end up paying a LOT of money and still be forced to forego all the benefits of being by the sea. Or be forced to inhale someone else's bad choices because smoking is allowed on the patios. If this were a fully non-smoking property, it could be a perfect place. Sadly, that is not yet the case. Many hotels are non-smoking and hopefully the Ritz will one day catch up. Again, everything else here is lovely and if the smoking thing doesn't bother you, then you will likely enjoy your stay. We would love to come back, but this might be the one thing that makes this almost perfect hotel, unbearable.

Thank you for your feedback and we can certainly empathize with your frustration. Although we are a non-smoking facility, we can not forbid guests to smoke outside of the hotel. We are so sorry that this put a damper on your wonderful stay with us. Please let us know the next time you visit and we will do our very best to ensure you have a wonderful experience.

At Ritz you expect great service and we certainly got this.
Disappointed that the restaurant is more of a corridor and this needs to be looked at.
Expensive but its the Ritz. Great cocktail bat overlooking the Pacific but needs to be bigger...

Thank you for your ideas. We greatly appreciate the feedback. We agree....we need more ocean front outdoor guest facilities. We are continuously brain storming ways to accomodate the large number of guests we serve every day. Our resort just celebrated its 27th year already! We have added numerous options for our guests and have more in the long range planning. We hope to never disappoint you or any of our valuable guests. Stay tuned for more additions and improvements. See you soon.
