“perfect location”

i have never been to a hotel with such a great location. it is just above the beach on an elevated plateau. you can see the sun fall into the ocean before your eyes. amazing.

interior design is very luxurious, rooms appear very clean and nice. nevertheless the price is very steep, even for a ritz.

overall, a deserved 5 stars.

We were excited to return to this property after a twelve year absence, knowing that the property has undergone significant renovation. The entry is very gracious and the welcome from the staff was warm and personal. Throughout our stay, the front desk staff and bell staff were extraordinarily friendly, helpful and efficient.
The main restaurant is laid out to maximize the stunning views of the ocean and beach below. Our waterfront room was as promised but as is typical at many Ritz properties, storage space is at a premium -- fine perhaps for a night or two but cramped for two people staying three nights.
The renovated fitness facility is very good looking and, like the restaurant, overlooks the ocean/beach. However, we found some of the equipment in need of repair with no attendant available any of the three times we visited the facility.
Our biggest complaint was with service at the restaurant during breakfast. Of our three mornings, we had great service one of the three times. The other two times, service was significantly lacking in several respects. In both cases, the poor service involved the hostess and the wait staff so there was no apparent way to elevate our complaint. Had we just had one bad experience, we would pass it off as bad timing. But two out of three times was more than we can ignore. Given these experiences, we decided against trying the hotel's more expensive dinner offering and intriguing chocolate/cheese/wine experience.
We also found the cleaning services somewhat lacking. In our room at check in was a folder containing a recycling bag into which we were encouraged to place our recycling. As avid recyclers, we promptly filled the bag the first evening. Unfortunately, the bag was taken the next morning and never replaced.
That evening, the turn down staff came while we were getting ready to go out to dinner (pretty common occurrence I would guess at 6:30). When I asked if she could come back in 20 minutes when we were gone to dinner, I got a look that said in no uncertain terms: "You must be joking!" Needless to say, she never returned.
Our rating for value reflects the fact that we stayed on a special package combination that included the ocean view room, breakfast, valet parking and resort fee. Were it not for the great package rate, our rating would have been lower.
All in all, a beautiful property in a wonderful location that needs some work to make the service quality at the front of the hotel consistent throughout.

My wife and I recently spent eight days at the RC in Dana Point with our two young daughters. We are New Englanders who travel quite a bit, mostly to FL, and enjoy the finer resorts. We chose this location because of its favorable place on T&L’s best resorts for families and because we hadn’t yet visited Southern California.
Our favorite resorts have been The Breakers in Palm Beach, The Arizona Biltmore, The FS’s Miami, The Mandarin Oriental NYC, The Portofino Bay Club at Universal and the RC’s in Sarasota, Naples, Central Park and Battery Park; they all now take a backseat to the RC Dana Point.
This hotel is breathtaking. Pictures do it little justice. From the bar and restaurant to the terrace, casual overlooks and the gym the views hypnotize you. Backlight this with the traditional RC level of customer service and you have a dream destination.
We stayed in a coastline view standard room for a few days before upgrading to an oceanfront executive suite. Each room was what you’d come to expect at the RC. Great beds, finely appointed bathrooms and, thank heavens, refrigerators instead of mini-bars. The suite came with two bathrooms, which helps a lot.
We also were at club level, which is a must at RC’s, especially with kids. The extra cash is easily offset with the food you get all day long and the time it saves you in feeding the kids. No brainer. The staff at the Dana Point club was better than most any other RC we’ve stayed in and that’s saying something.
Food was top notch; wait-staff was excellent and wine list deep and surprisingly un-gouged. (I’ve paid more for less at Disney resorts).
We hit the Sox/Angels game and paid less for the tickets and parking for four on the 1st base line than we would have paid for bleacher seats at Fenway. Travelled down to Legoland (very cool), to Balboa Island, Newport Beach and cozy parks and beaches along the PCH in Laguna Beach. Man, what a place.
Easter mass at St Edwards the Confessor with its views of the Pacific and beautiful service made my trip.
- Hit the Wine and Chocolate room.
- Feed the fish in the small stream on the south side of the property (near the pool)
- Use the 3rd floor (lobby level) terrace for pre-dinner cocktail and fun.
- Use the gym. You’ll feel like you’re on a cruise ship. Do it earlier in the day. Late afternoon sun creates quite a blinding feeling. (or workout in sunglasses)
- Tip well. We don’t want any turnover of the staff. They’re that good!
Lastly, if you are travelling to this area of the country to explore the thousands of things to do you’ll have to plan on missing most of it because you simply won’t want to leave the hotel.

Ah. Bliss. A five star worth its salt. To optimize the experience, highly suggest the club floor.

It's very difficult to find fault with this Ritz. We were there three nights and did not leave the resort with the exception of long walks on the surrounding paths and the beach below.

Restaurant was not the best or most sophisticated fare we have ever had, but the food was great and we felt satisfied overall. Service throughout the hotel we found exceptional.

One caveat, we could have skipped the wine bar, eno. Not very happy server who seemed bothered to serve us our flight of unimpressive wine and the chocolates we were interested in were sold out.

A couple of pretentious, loud, cell-phone guests by the pool, but that's not something the hotel can control!

Otherwise, top-notch and well-done. We will be back soon!

We stayed at this Ritz Carlton for a Disney southern California vacation for 3 nights. The first room we got was dark and small, so we asked for a different room, granted we booked on a special. The room overlooked the garden and the bed was what you would expect, overall the room did not have any wow factors. I don't know about your, but I still expect some wow from a Ritz Carlton room, not a over glorified Marriott version.

Anyways, enough about the room. What we enjoyed the most about our hotel was its location, as well as the reception area. We took long walks on the beach and enjoyed afternoon tea almost every day (not high tea, just ordering their tea with appetizers in the afternoon, when the business folks have left and the reception hall is not packed). My partner got sick the second night we were there, so I used the downstairs reception area to read and have night caps the last two nights we were there.

Overall, I liked the ambiance and location of the hotel, but was sorely disappointed with the actual room.

My husband and I were looking for a local getaway in So. Cal. and decided to do Laguna Beach/Dana Point. We could not decide between the St. Regis and the Ritz. However, having seen both of their locations we are sure we made the best choice. The Ritz has a far better location than the St. Regis. You can walk down to the beach very easily and had beautiful views. Therefore, if you are deciding whether to stay at the St. Regis or the Ritz and want to be as close to the beach as possible, stay at the Ritz-Carlton.

Having said that, the hotel was perfect. The grounds are beautiful, the decor is very posh, and the service is outstanding. I will, however, say a few things that I thought the hotel could improve on. We have stayed at many Four Seasons and comparing this Ritz-Carlton to other F.S. we thought the Ritz-Carlton could improve on 1. their spa and 2. the pool. The spa was beautiful and we had a great massage, but for the price ($195/60 minutes) I thought it could have been better. The spa is very small; no jacuzzi; and charges a 30 fee if you don't book an appointment and want to use any of their facilities. We have stayed at beautiful F.S. resorts with amazing spas and no type of additional fee was charged at any time (whether we booked something or not) and the massages were at the most $150/hr. So, I thought it was pretty pricey for what we were getting. In addition, the pool was o.k. but nothing amazing. No beach view from it. The chairs were a little outdated and they need more staff to have more efficient pool service.

Having said that, I would still recommend this hotel because it was beautiful, great room service, and it has great views of the beach. Overall, it is beautiful!

I was so excited about my weekend trip, the hotel is beautiful, amazing location, wonderful staff but NOISY as hell. If I were to come back it would not be over a weekend when parties and weddings are taking place. I got absolutely NO sleep and could not wait to get home and get some sleep. The building is older and the doors and rooms need serious SOUND PROOF upgrades. If anyone from the hotel reads this- I suggest putting young rowdy wedding parties on one side of the hotel and the other guests at the opposite end. I am VERY disppointed. I would also recommend not charging a DAY USE FEE for the spa to guests who only want to use the showers and steam room.
