“Fine for business travel not a vacation”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2006

Don't think I would be brining the wife here for a vacation but it was fine for staying one night for business. Decor is somwhat like a cruise ship and needs help. Otherwise rooms are clean with high speed internet

This is one of the best! Just returned from a three
night stay, what a fantastic resort. Even with a LARGE
national convention going on we felt we had the facilities to ourselves. The location couldn't be better. The highlights for us were as follows; pool, fitness center, walking to great restaurants close by, friendly & attentive staff, no wait for car with valet parking. The pool was 85 degrees and we were the only ones using it on two great sunny afternoons. The fitness center is "state of the art" with all new top line equipment, again alone on all three days! Didn't eat at the resort as we found walking to restaurants allowed for more cheesecake. The rooms are quiet, great beds & linens, be prepared they are fairly small & only a few of them will have any ocean view, quiet & private feel makes the rooms special. This was our first stay at Laguna Cliffs, after many trips to the area, we will always choose this one in the future. Also, this is about half the price of the Ritz or St Regis and has a much better feel. This property was a great find for us.

My boyfriend surprised me for our one year anniversary with a stay at the Laguna Cliff Marriott. Unfortunately the "sales people" (staff of the hotel) that booked our reservation, blatently lied to get our reservation. We had reservations for dinner in downtown Laguna and they said it was walking distance. It was a $50 round trip CAB RIDE, hardly walking distance.

The hotel greets you with hands extended and a $22 self parking fee. Check in is at 4PM and check out is at 11PM and there is a charge for a later check out. Front desk staff is rude. We paid $300 for 19 hours in one of their horrible rooms?!

The bar was closed, but no one bothered to tell us as we sat waiting for 20 minutes. The restaurant serves food equivalent to Denny's, but at twice the price. Waitress was sweet and cocktails were very good.

Security can't be that good since my boyfriend threw on my pink thong underwear and strutted around the pool after-hours and no one said anything.

The Spa was excellent. The best couples massage we've ever had, but there is an extra charge to use the co-ed hot tub?

The Laguna Cliffs Marriott [--] royally. There are PLENTY of much better resorts in the area.

My husband and I took advantage of a great special which included a buffet breakfast. (Parking was extra at $22.00 per day). The offer ended December 31st and our reservations were for December 29/30. My husband had the flu and when I called the hotel reservation office they graciously allowed us to postpone our stay until January 8/9. We tried for an early check-in but because of a large conference at the hotel our room was not ready until the regular 4:00pm check-in time. This hotel is on a hill above Dana Point Harbor and has a wonderful location. It borders a public park which makes the hotel grounds seem very large and open. The grounds of the hotel are lovely, as was our room. The room was tastefully decorated, quiet and comfortable. We had a small balcony with two chairs which overlooked the pool and we could also see the coastline. The buffet breakfast was bountiful and delicious, and the dining room was bright and cheerful. We had a wonderful seafood dinner at the Harbor Grill in Dana Point Harbor. Proud Mary's in the harbor is always a hit for breakfast or lunch. Capistrano is inland about ten minutes and features the Capistrano Mission, several shops, restaurants etc. San Clemento is ten minutes south and Laguna Beach is ten-fifteen minutes north. They are fun towns to explore. We have enjoyed Dana Point Harbor for many years and since we live only 40 miles from Dana Point, we found Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort and Spa to be a great post-holiday get-away. We look forward to another stay at this hotel.

This hotel is located right across the street (and down a small hill) from a wonderful public beach. The restaurant and bar has amazing ocean views. My room had a horizon ocean view, and a great view of a courtyard wedding ceremony. The speakers were incredibly loud--I could hear everything word for word. Luckily the noise subsided by 6pm.

The spa is smaller than other resorts that play up their spa (like La Costa Resort & Spa) but had all the basics-sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, showers. The stall showers have at least 6 shower heads spraying water in different directions--very relaxing. Treatments were great, therapists and receptionists professional and welcoming.

I did notice a few minor problems due to lack of attention of the staff's part:

The spa towels, lotions, q tips, etc were running low and were not replenished during my visit, even after two employees walked through the spa at different times. There were also used cups and towels on the vanities and floor.

I was in the fitness center twice, once around 4pm and again at 9am--both times there was no attendant, no towels, and an empty pitcher of water.

The front desk staff was rather short at check in and forgot to explain how my spa package worked, which resulted in a double charge on my bill. But this was quickly resolved at check out with few objections from the morning clerk. And yes, you have to pay $22 for parking, but nowadays what hotel doesn't charge such a fee? Valet was quick and friendly. At least there is no resort fee.

Room service was quick and arrived hot, but twice they forgot the small things on the side that I had requested, like ketchup and dressings.

Since I was one of the few guests in the restaurant during breakfast, some of the staff was a bit noisy and talkative in setting up the tables; but this did not bother me much since the view is lovely.

Overall, a nice stay, but the staff needs some minor improvements. To me, attention to small details are what makes a hotel over the top.

stayed with husband and 2 teenagers, we were given a room the size of closet, next to ice machine(noisy). Hotel nearly empty, paid $50 per night priceline, plus $22 a night to self park car in empty lot. At $50 per night it's a great deal. Hot tub nice and hot, pool 85 degrees, easy walk down many steps and across busy street to very nice doheney park/beach, and places to enjoy casual to fancy meals. Clean, staff friendly. Optional $25 a day per room fee for all beach supplies:chairs, boogie boards, fins, umbrellas, tennis, bike rental(1 hr).

I recently stayed at the Laguna Cliffs after seeing a great offer on Travelzoo. I usually stay in Newport or Laguna Beach but have heard great things about Dana Point and decided to explore further south (10 minutes). The hotels exterior reminds be of Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego and is decorated in a nautical theme throughout the lobby and rooms. I did not have the opportunity to enjoy the spa but it looked new and very clean. I ate breakfast and lunch at the Regatta grill and loved the food, grilled chicken with cheese and avocado yummm, and also enjoyed cocktails at Commodore's in the evening. My room was slightly larger than other Marriott properties with vaulted ceilings as I was on the top floor. The rooms looked recently renovated with the last year and the bed was very comfortable. The property has great views of the ocean as it is located on top of a shallow cliff with a lighted walking path to the public beach below. With its great location and newly renovated rooms I enjoyed my stay at Laguna Cliffs. I will definitely be back.

Tip: Valet and self parking are the same cost so live it up and roll to the front door.
