Nestled on the edge of the salt flats a stones throw from the beach, IRIS Food and Spirits is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of Del Mar's Coast Highway strip of restaurants and the concentration of door-to-door spots in La Jolla. My wife enjoyed it for lunch with colleagues, so we wound our way down Carmel Valley Road from I-5 toward the coast and found IRIS nestled in a neighborhood setting with convenient parking. Our server, Chelsea, welcomed us warmly with good wines by the glass and fresh-baked bread. Soup d'jour was a New England Clam Chowder, served hot with local clams in the shell. Since IRIS' owners are Bostonians, they even spelled it correctly....CHOWDAH. Delicious! My wife had the Iris Cassoulet with chicken, Italian sausage and tuscan beans. It was spiced perfectly and served piping hot and we both loved the flavors. My seafood pasta special included day-boat scallops, grilled shrimp and chunks of lobster in a simple grape tomato, basil and olive oil sauce over linguini. Perfect! Reasonably priced with nice atmosphere and scenery, nestled between Torrey Pines beach and The Pacific Coaster railway, we highly recommend you try IRIS Food and Spirits.
