We had booked an oceanside rv spot and were shocked to find ourselves without water or electricity. The initial welcome too was a little perfunctory. In every other respect the site was very good. The store provided nachos at a very reasonable price. The beach was stunning and the crashing waves left us largely oblivious to the train noise.

Aside from the close proximity to the city, San Elijo is beautiful, nice soft sands, beautiful sunsets, great bluff for taking pics of stars ...but don't expect any kind of r&r...the trains wake me up every time. It's 3:46am and I'm on TripAdvisor...why?!? Cuz I can't sleep!!!!

This campground is right next a highway and railway!! The train runs till mid night from early morning. A lot of traffic going on the highway. 5 mins walk, you can find Starbucks, grocery store, restaurants and so on.
Flash toilet is cool, the view is great, but doesn't worth for over $50. I didn't even feel like camping here.
Not WiFi available still.

Awesome surf, clean beaches, great hole in the wall restaurant. Reserve early. As in 7 months prior to when you want to go the moment they open up the "block" for reservations to get a space on the ocean side (versus the noisy, no privacy street side).

If you're adventurous you can show up early day of and stand in line and HOPE there's one open space available for you that same day. BUT better have a back up plan.

Reserving a good space here is an art but worth getting to know.

This place has some nice views if you get ocean front camp, the Inland campgrounds are ok, except for the train and not much of a view. The inland campground face the street. We saw one guy on the street hide behind an electrical box and shootup. The rely bad part is our neighboe parallel campground we rely partying up, bringing more than the alloted people in the spot by jumping the fence, they had tons of alcohol and some we even passed out, smoking weed, the music they played was discussing, detailing prostitutes, describing women's body parts and an extreme amount of cursing. Pretty much everything you don't want in a camping trip, and never want you kids exposed to.
The problem is after 5 pm it is impossible to get a hold of any one on the campground, there is no afterhours number, so we called the sheriff twice, the people would see lights and turn the music off and behave and hide the weed. the rangers went out told them to be midfull of others as they left the part continued till 11 we then we furious and went to there camp and asked them to please turn it down. 15 min later started allover again.
You would think this campground would enforce there "quiet" time at 10 pm and ther rule of "music must not be herd past your campsite " there was herd past 15 campsites.
So we decided to leave since it became an unsafe and non peaceful environment. As we left we saw the camp attendants trailer and woke him up, very nice guy, just wish there was a number to him or an easy way to Find him. He then called the rangers once more, not sure what happened. He did over to move our camp site but by this time we just wanted to get home.

A friend of ours held the reservation but couldnt go the first night so we went in their place for just one evening. Our site was not against the ocean but in the middle near the Bull Taco restaurant so we were close to food, bathrooms, the beach and the front entrance. We were able to set up camp and tear down within the 12 hour span of time we were there. Getting up and going to the beach was exciting and a get way to start the day. I am hoping to snag one of these camp sites in the near future because I had fun doing some local camping and right near the beach.

Just spent the 4th of July (and weekend) camping at San Elijo with family and friends. Campground is alright for city camping, much better if you get the opportunity to camp with a view of the ocean. Downfall was the train that runs, what seemed like every hour overnight, with the horns blaring and crossing signals sounding. Not the fault of the campground, just makes the experience a little less, especially if you are in a tent! The sites are clean and most are quite large, accommodating multiple tents and trailers. Showers and bathrooms were fairly clean. The beach however, was pretty nasty and looked as though it hadn't been raked of the seaweed in at least a month, which in turn made the flies really bad to the point of not being able to open your mouth when a swarm came by. All in all, a pretty good campground to experience convenient, in-city camping with great views.
