“Authentic Japanese”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

A "real" Japanese restaurant, with Japanese staff, supplies and drinks. The Buri Teriyaki was a standout amongst an excellent meal. Tempura was as light as it should be.
The location is not obvious, so needs a bit of work to find, but worth the effort! Parking is easy and very close.

“Legit Japanese Izakaya”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2011

Tables were a bit limited, sit at the bar if possible. Would be fun to sit
Outside on the deck if it is warm enough. Many Japanese restaurants are not run by Japanese, Shimbashi is a legit place with chefs that know what they are doing and fresh fish.

“hard to find, nothing really wowed us”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2011

this place is kind of hidden, but in the main plaza in del mar. We tried the squid tempura which tasted like bland rubber. then got two different rolls that was just "ok". one was $20 and i did not feel it was worth that price tag. the rolls were good but pricey for the size. even though its a little pricy the service is very good.

“Excellent, casual and totally Japanese”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2011

The restaurant is on the main (cute) street of Del Mar. It sits high up so there is a view of the ocean. The setting is casual with simple tables, silverware, glassware, etc. Everyone working there seemed to be Japanese which bodes well for the place.

My daughter loved her miso soup and udon noodles. The shrimp tempura was deliciously fresh. The steak on a skewer was of very high quality and very tasty. We had two different types of sushi which was, like the rest, excellent.

My wife had the stir-fry vegetables and she said they were so good, crispy and devoid of that greasy taste that sometimes comes with stir-fry.

We recommend this place.
