“Typical and beautiful San Diego area beach”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

We visited as many beaches as we could while vacationing in the Del Mar area, and this beach was very nice, with a pretty park next to it. The one thing that I noticed about this beach that was different than the others was the lifeguard service. They had several rescue boats and many lifeguards stationed there; way more than I saw at other beaches. There were great waves for surfing and also it was more of a family beach with the park being next door, so I was very impressed by the attention to safety. You can walk for miles along the cliffs, but the main part of the beach was large and well taken care of. Good place to go!

“Great beach to visit”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

Lots of good food options, great people watching, parking available, and within walking distance to great shops and quaint town of Del Mar. Clean restroom facilities, and an awesome grassy knoll to picnic on if sitting or dining on the sand is not your thing.

“Beachy keen!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

After failing to find a parking spot at La Jolla Cove Sunday night, we hit this Monday morning. So cool. Found free parking and a very sparsely populated beach. There were some dog walkers (which we greeted happily in spite of "no dogs allowed" signage. There were the runners who were having a peaceful jog on the sand. And there was us soaking in some morning rays, getting our feet wet, and basking in the morning's easy surf. There is still wonderful solitude in the San Diego area if you get your timing right.

“Great Beach/Town To Stroll For A Couple Hours”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Del Mar Beach and downtown is laid back, relaxing and good spot to stroll for a couple of hours. The beach itself is OK with lots of black hard sand and not great sand for walking on so bring sand shoes. Along the edge are plenty of parks with free bathrooms and changing areas.

Downtown has nice outdoor cafes, Starbucks of course and ice cream places. Not too much real shopping however.

If you plan on staying longer on the beach, you have to bring your own chairs and umbrellas, there is no beach service.

“excellent Saturday morning people watching!”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

Grab a coffee from the local coffee shop, a newspaper or your camera and walk on over. Make sure to watch where you park so you don't get a fine. This beach is pedestrian AND surfer friendly! There are plenty of places to sit and just watch the world go by. It is a great surfing area. I loved watching all of the "experienced" surfers catching a wave or 2 and the tenacity of some who stayed out there for hours hoping to catch one too. The mix of surfers was eclectic, some young and old, but they were all friendly. This is a place where everyone seemed to feel comfortable - singles, families, swimmers, people watchers, photographers, even a few tourists like myself. This is what a CA beach SHOULD be like. It was also well maintained, free of litter and waste and there was a public restroom somewhere. It's also likely not as busy as say La Jolla Cove or some of the other San Diego beaches are!
