Description: Jake’s Del Mar brings new American cooking to the edge – to the water’s edge that is. Located right on the beach in Del Mar Chef Duvinh Ta uses fresh, seasonal products as the inspiration for updating classic preparations of fresh fish, shellfish and premium meats. The lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch menus showcase clean, eclectic flavors and local, sustainable products that are complemented by Jake’s jaw dropping location on the sand. The nightly Chef’s Special is a seasonal creation that features the best seafood, meats and produce available and through the Legacy of Aloha program, Jake’s donates a portion the proceeds from the Chef’s Special to the San Diego Food Bank.

Every time we are in La Jolla, we always spend time down in Del Mar and eat lunch at Jake's. We really love the calamari and the sandwiches are great. They have wonderful salads too. It's best to get reservations, because there's always a crowd. If you can request to be seated by the window in their sunroom area. Jakes sits right on the beach so you can watch people play a game of volley ball, kids surfing and enjoy the ocean breeze, because the windows open. Always fun to eat at Jakes. They have valet parking which I encourage, because parking can be a challange in the area.

I really liked the interior of this restaurant. Very beach like, warm, and friendly and family oriented. While it is beach front, it doesn't have outdoor seating right on the beach like Poseidon does right next door. With that said, the service was excellent to match the ambiance. The food was not the best but of the places we ate in the area this was one of the better options. I would for sure return next time I am in the area. Reservations recommended.

Great restaurant on the water and food was excellent. Group of 8 was seated promptly with a reservation and outstanding service. Wine was reasonably priced. Ahi meal was recommended and half of the group went with it and everyone enjoyed it. The other half of the group enjoyed other seafood dishes. Desserts were good and Hula Pie is family size.

We thought we try Jakes happy hour from 4 to 6pm on a Monday. We were lucky to get two seats at the bar on the side counter. The bar was packed, loud, and it was anything BUT relaxing.

Between the two of us, we tried the fried calamari on some plum sauce which was very tasty; we also had their Monday night special--bourbon chicken with mac and cheese for $8 and that was very good. It was just one piece of chicken with a small portion of mac n cheese. It is really a tapas food portion. Now, the rest of the food we ordered was inedible…shrimp fettucine came as a big clump of pasta all stuck together with some bland and tasteless sauce slopped on top of it with 4 tiger prawns and zucchini and tomatoes. It was so awful tasting that I had to return it so the kitchen did come back with a bowl of noodles not stuck in one blob but the sauce is still tasteless and awful.
We also had the mussels cooked in a lemongrass broth but some of the mussels were inedible because it smelled. It definitely was NOT fresh like the ones we have had before elsewhere.

This is the WORST meal we had during our stay in San Diego and I would not recommend Jakes for the happy hour menu or setting. Perhaps the food quality is different in the dining room but if the food comes out of the same kitchen, then I have to wonder…ummm..

There are so many other wonderful seafood restaurants in Carlsbad that no one needs to be fed awful food like this. Sure happy hour is 40% off the Bistro menu but items like the mussels was $13, shrimp fettucine was $15 but it's the restaurant's reputation here.

Now this is a place with a view! It's right on the beach in Del Mar- spectacular! I'd been here for a drink a couple of times because it's a fun place to go- but had never eaten there until last Saturday. I was disappointed- the food was average. But Jake's makes up for it with a great ambiance, great service and a fun crowd...just don't expect too much from the food.
