“Noshes in the desert”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2013

What a charming spot - we passed through on our way back from a long day at Joshua Tree, too pooped to barbecue. Excellent tacos, sandwiches and shakes fit the bill deliciously for refreshing us. Good conversation, a bit of anything you'd need camping nearby - including fresh fruit and produce which small stores like this don't usually have much of. Awesome retro candy and soda selection and the Date Shake was indeed FAB!!!

“Real Grpund up Dates”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2013

What makes these shakes so good is that they use real ground up dates, not the artificial flavored stuff. Nice home comfortable place with seating out side in the back. Place reminds me of an old soda fountain and pharmacy that is a tiny grocery store instead. Other offerings from the small kitchen as well but stuff you can get anywhere but not these great shakes.

“Great Shake In the Desert”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2013

After a nice lunch and hike near Palm Springs, we stopped for dessert here. We all had Date Shakes! We ordered two large date shakes and the girl split the order into smaller cups....two large is enough for five! Also, be sure to take some fresh local dates home. Which ones..we knew after being offered samples of the three available varieties.. Then we asked for directions to Cabot Museum and the helpful owners gave them to us. Stop here for a real authentic taste of the desert!

“Get into the real, old-time desert scene!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2013

If you're looking for upscale, hoity-toity "Palm Springs vibe" this ain't it. But if you want a taste (literally) of what the desert scene was like some 50 years ago, this is a good place to be. Kind of like an old-time store and very down-to-earth, and when desert people were genuinely friendly.

Yes, it's tiny. It's kind of shabby. But the proprietors are some of the nicest people ever. And, based on fellow Yelpers' reviews of their date shakes I thought I would give them a try. For $2.99 for a small, $3.99 for a large, the prices are more than reasonable. The shakes are made the old-fashioned way with real ice cream and, instead of date crystals like they use at Shields and some other places, they chop up real dates. So, their claim of making the best date shake won't get any argument from me. Totally delicious! They also sell sandwiches at very reasonable prices.

We sat out in the cute little garden behind the store to drink our shakes -- something we probably wouldn't want to do in the summer, but the temperature was 70 degrees when we visited, so it was quite pleasant.

They have some really bizarre brands of root beer in bottles, too, and something called Maple Bacon Soda. They also stock Moon Pie! Unfortunately, no R.C. Cola to wash it down.

OK, the parking lot is miniscule. Only four parking slots, one of which is handicapped-only. But you might try parking on the dirt area just north of the store. Also, traffic on Indian Avenue can be bumper-to-bumper, making ingress/egress difficult.

But I suggest you try this hidden "gem in the desert." At least get a shake!

“Date Shake Specialty!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2013

They use fresh dates (not sweet powder like most places) and real ice cream so the shakes are delicious. This is a quaint little place that seems out of the past and is a true "mom and pop". It is just one mile north of the 10 interstate at the first stop sign. They have a sunny patio in the rear where you can sit and enjoy some green grass, privacy, and your shake. A nice change of pace.
They also have home made food but we did not try it.
