The Downieville River Inn and Resort is my kind of place: unpretentious, full of character, and surrounded by natural beauty. We were greeted in the parking lot by the manager, who made us feel right at home. He showed us our room, which I immediately loved. The place was built in the '30s, screen doors and porches. Drinking coffee, eating a lovely breakfast that Diane brought to the room, and sitting in a worn wicker chair, listening to the river and looking at the charming town and pine covered mountains is about as good as it gets. The hotel sits on a dead end road and just across it is the river. We heard it at night while we were falling asleep. In the morning we walked to the end of the road to a small beach and waded and read our books. We didn't want to leave, but the drive through the forest was lovely and we returned to the city feeling refreshed.
