Eat here. Stay at the resort if you can. But don't miss eating here if you are near Dunsmuir. We're from Portland and were staying our last night of a 5 day road trip with our 8 yr old. The caboose thing was neat. But the food. Oh the food. It was the best meal we've had in a year. We went to Vegas and went big for our 40ths last year. Other than those meals, this dinner at the Railroad Park Resort Restaurant was probably the best in several years. Perhaps ever. And we eat at some really good Portland spots. Atmosphere was neat, inside some conjoined rail cars. The decor was historical rustic. The staff (we had Susie) was attentive and very friendly. The chef was quite open to substitutes and off menu requests. It was a little loud, as the bar was 3 ft away, and appeared to be a locals hangout. But the food was rediculously good. I will never miss a meal here as long as I'm traveling thru on I-5. Never. (No kid's menu, but some normal items that they could dig into like a burger or chicken strips - at regular menu prices. Not a big deal though. They won't know the difference.)

Enjoyed our dinner, felt just like we were riding a real train, except it wasn't moving. Waitress was wonderful, friendly and helpful.

When we stayed at the resort 3 years ago the restaurant was not open (maybe because it was too early in the week?) so when we checked in this time we made our dinner reservation immediately. The ambience of the vintage railroad car just can't be beat and having dinner in a stationary one simplifies the experience. I had a spinach salad that was deliciously fresh & crisp and a rib eye steak that would rival any at a prime Chicago steak house in every way but price. Service was excellent and we were surprised to see a motorized lazy boy recliner complete with ground effects lighting cruising around the grounds of the park. You never know what you might see! The resort is beautiful - the cabooses & the crags & the sounds of bull frogs that inhabit the ingenious water feature that graces the property.
Don't miss the chance to visit & take advantage of this special place.

The restaurant is constructed around railcars and the decor is very cool. There's a good view from every spot.

A few things to know in advance:

1. The restaurant is the only place to eat for a few miles. You have to get back on I-5 and go to either Dunsmuir or Mt. Shasta otherwise.

2. They only serve dinner and it's only Wednesday through Sunday. Maybe not year round, either.

3. You need to make reservations. Show up a little early or they'll give your table away.

The reservation thing seems a little strange, as there are LOTS of tables available. The limit is due to a shortage of servers, small kitchen staff, and the sole bartender.

We ate dinner at the restaurant our first night and ordered the halibut, which was marked as a house specialty. It was not good. Very greasy. I had a good gin and tonic, but the bar taps were dry, so no beer from the Dunsmuir brewery.

Second night we were exhausted from climbing Castle Crags and decided we didn't want to venture out of the resort. We played Scrabble on the bar deck and had a drink while we waited for our dinner. Would have had two, but the bar was packed and the bartender swamped. They did have Dunsmuir beer, however.

At 7:35 we went in for our 7:30 reservation and they'd given our table away. After some scrambling we were seated. We then had a lengthy wait to order. We ordered prime rib, which is only served Fridays and Saturdays. We apparently got the last piece. It was delicious -- cooked perfectly. This dinner was a great improvement over the first night and we highly recommend the prime rib.

If you don't want to leave the resort, this is a fine place for a moderately expensive dinner. But there is far better food at several locations in Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta.

Would not recommend this restaurant for families with young children. The unpredictability of the service could lead to a meltdown.

Had dinner with our group of six and all enjoyed their meal. The rail car room was fun and on the week night we went, very quiet and enjoyable. All six initially went thinking we would have beef but all selected a fish dish and we were not disappointed. Service was friendly and prompt and the fish dishes were perfectly cooked. Recommend if you are in or near Dunsmuir
