“My Little Piece of Heaven”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Fifteen years ago, we happened upon Elk Cove Inn and stayed in a little cottage room that felt like being in a wonderful tree house. We loved this place and kept a picture inside a kitchen cabinet so we would remember to return. Alabama is a long way from the Northern California coast and it was many years before we were able to visit again. On this trip we upgraded to the Frank Drew Suite (see pictures) and I felt totally spoiled. The owner and her staff truly make you feel welcome. The suite was beautiful and had everything - small fridge, microwave, sink, plates, glasses, flatware and corkscrew. You are given a welcome basket on arrival - wine, grapes, cookies, and microwave popcorn. The large bathroom has a jacuzzi and shower. The view from this suite is incredible. I enjoyed sitting on the stone porch and just gazing at the grounds and the ocean in the distance; it felt like a little piece of heaven. If you are able to manage the stairs (picture), they lead down to a trail to the shore. We spotted an otter making a dash for the water and enjoyed a walk on the beach. Complimentary wine and cocktails are served in the main house between 4 and 6. Breakfast offers a variety of tempting dishes - more than I can describe here. Visit the web-site to see a picture of the buffet and descriptions - http://www.elkcoveinn.com.

The other reviewers describe this place well--the views, the setting, the staff. I most appreciated how, overall, the owner and staff feel like they really care about their property and want guests to be there. I find it hard to go away for a special weekend and spend a lot of money to feel like we're not welcome or a burden. The staff here were all kind, friendly and seemed to be glad to have guests.

Also the generosity impressed me. The room price is more than fair with all the benefits of staying at the Inn. You'll see when you get there...

Some things that may be helpful to know:

Some rooms are near HWY 1, and ours was one of them, which concerned me since that can make it hard to sleep. However, I didn't notice the noise at all. I suppose it's not the high season, and we were not in our room much during the day, but the night time is when I most need it quiet.

Also, we stayed in Cypress Garden, in the main house. This is next to the TV room, which could be a problem if people ended up wanting to watch TV into the night and you're a light sleeper. However, no one used the room while we were there, so we don't know if the sound travels far.

The internet in our room was not working. The staff said they are working on that, but if you need internet (which we didn't, so not a big deal for us) you probably would be best asking which rooms have good access before booking.

Oh, and there is one cabin/cottage, not sure which one, that if you're a couple who wants to be "close." I would be careful to ask the managers which cabin/cottage is most private. There is one cottage that faces the ocean but a grassy outdoor area is between the main window and the ocean so people at the inn walk right by it and can see into the room if the blinds are open. If you want privacy I wouldn't choose that room.

This inn isn't "perfect", (and what is!) so if you're looking for issues you will find some. However, in my view "love covers a multitude of sins." I've stayed in more "luxurious" places, but they haven't been as this place.

Relaxing and beautiful. Great place to stop on the coast. Baywatch room was very comfortable with a view. Trails down to the beach are nice and the innkeepers were extremely hospitable. Can't think of a single negative thing. Wish we had more time to stay longer.

When planning a trip to the Northern California coast last fall, I came upon Elk Cove Inn during a google search. It was all it promised to be and more! The serenity and natural beauty of the grounds were amazing. The hospitality shown by the innkeepers was much appreciated, and the breakfasts! What can I say about the breakfasts? Each morning was a delight! And my new favorite cookie is the Elk Cove Inn cookie, for which they are willing to share the recipe!
The close proximity to vineyards and redwoods makes Elk Cove Inn the perfect spot for a weekend getaway!

Weve stayed in Mendocino county countless times but by far this Inn has been the MOST romantic stay. And, dollar for dollar had many perks. The staff were accommodating and really cared about our stay. Next visit will be on our Harleys. They love motorcycles!

My sweetheart and I went to the Elk Cove Inn for our own private elopement and our expectations were not only met, but exceeded. We were given our choice of a cozy, thickly-carpeted, beautiful room with a fireplace in the historic main house or a private cabin literally perched over the creek with a view of the massive rock island that lies in the middle of one's view of the Pacific Ocean. We had a hard time deciding, but chose the rustic cabin with its love seat looking out on that view.
We love the restaurants in Elk (totally cute Mendocino coast town) but this time we opted to remain for our entire stay on the premises of the Inn. After getting settled and enjoying delicious chocolate chip cookies in our gift basket and getting our champagne and ice squared away, we put on rain gear and took a romantic walk through the grounds and down a timber stair to the mouth of the creek and the sand bar of Elk Cove beach, where the creek poured into the ocean. (Next morning, as is typical here in the winter season, the creek mouth was in a different place, cutting a new channel through the sand and rock.) After hiking back, we returned to our sweet room and dressed formally as if going out. Instead, we took part in the Inn's happy hour at 4pm, with complimentary wines and even whiskey, as well as little snacks. We visited with the friendly inn-keeper and then retired to our cabin, where we had our private picnic on the love seat, with our gas fire warming the little space on a rainy moody March evening. We had everything we needed at our fingertips, including a collectible Scrabble game and a guest book to record fond memories, as hundreds of guests had done before us.
The complimentary breakfast next morning in the Inn's dining room with panoramic views of the sea was absolutely stellar. Neither of us had had a better breakfast in any other hotel. It was a sustaining meal, which we enjoyed with other guests, providing advice on local attractions (we are Mendocino locals). We were served graciously by the inn-owner herself, Elaine, who has a wicked sense of humor and a kind word for everyone. After relaxing in our robes in the cabin, we packed up and said goodbye, but we'll be back for sure.
