“Peaceful but.....”
Reviewed 9 April 2006

I booked this place purely on the positive reviews and decided not to stay at the ritz in Half moon bay (which was my first choice).

The first thing is it rained the entire time we were there. I know its not the fault of the elk cove inn and spa. So this is not reflected in my review. But its hard to hike or explore the beach with heavy rains the entire day.

We stayed in surfsong. The room was nice and had a good view of the ocean. Couple things I didnt care for though was the seating couch in front of the window was very musty smelling. My wife was spraying some body spray she brought onto it about every hour. The window outlooking the ocean did not have glass but some sort of plexiglass which was scratched in areas.

Obvious someone has brought their cats to the place before because my wife is very allergic to dander and when we were in the place she couldnt breathe. We would go out to dinner and she could breathe again. Once we got back to the surfsong room, within 5 minutes her sinuses were stuffed. So convientely they have an air ionizer/fan probably for this reason. It SORT of did the trick on clearing the air up but it had a horrible high pitch buzzing to it. Very annoying noise which blocked the sound of the ocean. So do you want clean air and buzzing or ocean sound.
Another little thing is that they need to put a screen in the side window. We left it open so we could hear the sound of the ocean but since there was no screen we were having bugs fly into the room.

Funny thing happened the last night. In the middle of the night we awoke about 2am to a loud squeeling noise outside coming from some animal followed by a horrible, HORRIBLE skunk smell drifting into the room. I quickly got up and shut the window but it was kind of too late. Our room was stinky. Made it hard to fall back asleep. The next morning when we went to breakfast as soon as we stepped outside the skunk smell was gone from outside. But after breakfast when we stepped back into our room we could smell the skunk. So we opened the window to air out the room. And yes I know this has nothing to do with the elk cove inn and spa. Just funny story I thought I would share.

The breakfast is average. Nothing to praise but its ok. Make sure you like corned beef and biscuits and gravy.

We didnt eat dinner there.

Our 2 day stay was relaxing. I read a whole book but I think most of the places along this part of the coast would be relaxing. I personally wouldnt recommend staying here. Room and especially bathroom are very old. (mold growing under the plastic of the faucet in the sink of the bathroom).

And I know this highly contradicts all the other readers comments. Maybe its just the surfsong room. There are others that they offer. all are unique. Next time I go to Mendocino coast I might try the Heritage House up the street. It looked nice or just stay in Mendocino itself as we ended up driving there both nights for dinner. (about 30 minute drive, very windy road, especially at coming back @ 10pm after a bottle of wine)

Just returned from a fantastic 1 night stay at Elk Cove. Honeymooners, those renewing their wedding vows and couples wanting massages by the sea are the patrons here. We wanted a little getaway from Marin and the 2.5 hour drive seemed a fair distance for our 1 night getaway. Upon arriving, the sweet innkeeper showed us our room, which we had booked just 2 days prior. It was in the main house and had a garden view. Although cute, it wasn't as romantic as we were expecting. We asked if there were other rooms available, and she showed us 1 room left, which was the Bavarian. As soon as we walked in, my husband said, "This is the room." With an oversized picture window looking out onto the crashing waves, a stovepipe fireplace, a large skylight and an enormous King sleighbed with soft down bedding, who could resist? The innkeeper said it was going to cost $50 more but that was quite a deal since it should usually cost over $100 more. We agreed to splurge. A short walk takes you to the ocean and another 5 minutes away is the tiny cute town. We walked on the trail to town, ate at a simple but tasty cafe and then retired for the evening to our cozy room, to nibble on the Inn's cookies, sip some wine and just relax.

Several Notes: The only drawback is that the large picture window has no curtain, so when the sun comes up it gets bright. Bring an eye mask to continue sleeping past daybreak! Also, the inn could use a hot tub, as we suggested to them, but they said the cost was too high for maintenance. Nontheless, perhaps some of the rooms could have a jacuzzi bath. And lastly, the Bavarian room's photos on the Inn's website does not do it justice. It has been completely redone and the furniture and bedding is much more sophisticated.

The buffet breakfast was sensational, with quiche, bread pudding, biscuits and gravy, fresh strawberries and more, hosted by Ellen, who makes sure you are well fed and happy. A couple of hiking trails kept us busy for a few hours until we headed to Mendocino. Oh, a lovely surprise, upon checking out, the innkeeper said that we did not owe an additional charge for the room, which was very unexpected. Hurrah for a memorable getaway at the Elk Cove Inn!
