“Breathtaking views, quaint charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2012

Quaint little B&B on the north coast of California, about a 4-5 hour drive north of San Francisco. Probably longer if you're taking the scenic route up CA-1 and stopping a few times to take in the views. We stayed in the ocean view cottage, which was cozy and adequately furnished for a weekend getaway. The deck yields spectacular views of the rugged coastline and there's a little nook in the cottage to enjoy the view from indoors (its does get chilly at night). The cottage came with a wood burning fireplace (there's no central heating), which makes things interesting if you are up for the challenge of keeping the fire going through the night. I personally did not find it to be a bother and there's a little seating area in front of the fireplace as well. The bathroom is very small, but assuming you're there only for a couple of nights, its something you can get past.

There is a pub/restaurant attached to the B&B. Oddly enough it's closed on Wednesdays and we happened to be there on that day. There are other eating options close by, and grocery stores if you want to pick up local wine and cheese. Elk is in Mendicino county, and there are plenty of good local wines available. Worth keeping in mind that there is little to no cellular coverage in the area; in fact you lose coverage before reaching Elk itself. They offer wi-fi, but it wasn't working on the night. We didn't bother checking with management, since getting away from it all was the point. But if you're looking stay plugged-in during your stay, then this is the wrong place.

An excellent getaway, close to SF and we're looking forward to going back there.

Room Tip: Ocean View Cottage has a beautiful view! Not a large space, but great for a weekend escape. Bathroom...

My wife and I stayed at this place for one night in October...and it was one night too many. Our first mistake....when we walked into the room, the entire room smelled like a wood stove. Obviously, the owner never airs the room out after use. We should have left then, but we were too tired from the long drive that day. Around one in the morning, my wife woke up with horrible coughing...she was having problems breathing because of the smoke smell...as soon as I opened a window allowing fresh air in, she was able to sleep. By the way....none of the windows have screens...The second mistake...my wife was already in bed...when I pulled down the covers...I realized the blanket and top sheet were pushed down by my wife's feet....she said it was like that when she got into bed and was trying to ignore the obvious. I contacted the owner...all she said was that she would "talk" to her cleaning staff. Folks, you would be better off sleeping in your car than sleeping at this place. The adjoining restaraunt was maybe a 3 star....don't eat there...locals like to belch at the bar.

Room Tip: Don't stop at this place.

My husband and I on our 50th birthday's motorcycle road trip happened to stop at this place unknowing of it's charm but knew this was the end of our day. Wow! what an incredible find. After 11 hrs on the bike, we come to an end at the cutest little blue and white cottage retreat resort adorned by a little modern Pub and fine dining restaurant with great gourmet meals inside in a tiny little coastal neighborhood set cliff side California's beautiful coast. The property lined in flowers. We had a magnificent cottage decorated cozy, modern and very clean accompanied with a complimentary bottle of wine from a local brewery. Hot coffee delivered to our room and a hot breakfast delivered 30 minutes later. All included in fee. Cost more than we hoped for but well worth ever penny. Loved the atmosphere and the experience. Great friendly hosts. Beautiful quaint little cottages, quiet, all amenities of a perfect getaway and a great sunset and sunrise. PERFECT!

We stayed at the Griffin house ,on our way to Humbolt State Park. After a long day of traveling it was the perfect place to stop. We hiked down to the state park beach, which is wild and beautiful. We went back to our room had a glass of complimentary wine while changing for dinner. The pub had good food, beer and atmosphere, plus it was nice not to have to get into the car. We lit our wood stove after dinner and had hot tea(cold and raining). Our rooms were cute, clean and the beds were sooo comfy. We stayed in an adjoining cottage with our teenagers that didn't have a water view. I went into one of the water view rooms and took pictures from deck, the view was fantastic.

My boyfriend and I have stayed here a few times and love it. We have stayed in a cottage without the ocean view and also one with the Ocean view (I don't remember the name of it, but it's the one on the far right hand side). We love it. The cottages and nice and maintained. The bedding is nice and compfy. Listening to the ocean all day and night and having a bottle of wine on the deck outside is just so relaxing. Also, the food they bring you every morning is just spectacular. I would recommend the place over and over again.

We stayed at the Griffin House for 4 nights, Wed thru Sunday. The room we stayed in was called the Gunderson. It did not have a view of the ocean, or anything else for that matter. It was definitly rustic, which is fine. It had a wood burning stove for heat and they supplied us with plenty of fire wood. But the room seemed really small. I'm 6' 2" and the sitting area seemed to be very cramped and difficult to get comfortable in. They served us breakfast in the room and there was a tiny little table to sit and eat at. It had these tiny little fold up chairs and everytime I got up from it I almost knocked it completely over. The breakfast food was pretty good though. On Friday and Saturday night there was alot of noise comming from the other hotel that was behind our room.
There's not much to do in Elk. Thank god this Inn had its own bar. Elk does however, have a very nice beach you can hike down to.
There is a restaurant attached to this Inn. We felt the food there was a little on the rough side. It is 1 of only 3 restaurants in Elk. And since 1 of the other restaurants is only open for breakfast/lunch and the other is only open on the weekends.
We didnt really have a choice of where to eat dinner. Unless we wanted to drive quite a ways.

We probably won't stay at the Griffin House again. With so much lodging compition in the Mendo area. There is too many other places we want to try. We felt the Griffin House wasn't worth the price.

Room Tip: Try 1 of the 3 rooms that over look the ocean. We heard they were alot better than the room we had...

Spent two nights again at the Griffin House Inn in Elk, CA nearing Valentine's Day. We stayed in one of the three cabins overlooking Elk Cove. No need to go anywhere! Robes are provided to lounge around either inside the cabin or out on your private deck. In both places the views of the ocean, cove and sea stacks are spectacular. Dinner can be ordered at the Pub, Briget Dolan's which is on-site, for delivery to your cabin. In the morning, coffee/tea arrives at your door and a delicious full breakfast follows shortly thereafter. When you do venture out, there is a nice public beach a short walk away, and a few shops and restaurants nearby. It was definitely fun to be near the ocean in weather ranging from stormy rain and wind to perfectly calm and sunny. Be prepared for the full range of weather and for unlimited stars on clear nights!

Room Tip: Three coastal cabins have spectacular coastal views.
