Sandpiper House Inn

I have stayed here several times through the years, and keep coming back because this location is as close to heaven as you will find. Peace and quiet, whales cruising by, bunnies frolicking in the yard, and the warmest, comfiest bed imaginable with unobstructed ocean views you feel like you can reach out and touch it is so close. Yes, this beautiful home has gone through a transition and is in the process of returning to its previous glory, but no other location has this view and privacy and the small scale attention to detail. Time evaporates and you can never take your eyes off this breathtaking view visible through expansive windows and the adirondack chairs located in the english garden overlooking the cove. Abalone shells abound for the adventurous (access to the beach is a few doors down on a gentle sloping path) and tide pools will amaze. This is the ultimate for rest and relaxation. This is an historical home, and its imperfections add to the character and life it has experienced since the early 1900's.
I've read other reviews and, sadly, some people can't see the beauty because they are too busy nitpicking inconsequential details or Groupon junkies. How anyone can look anywhere besides the gorgeous ocean view is a mystery to me. It is like criticizing El Capitan in Yosemite because rocks have fallen. This is a home, not a museum. Clean, friendly, extremely comfortable, and the BEST VIEW hands down. I leave refreshed and renewed after every visit, and count the days until I return. Whales everywhere right now, and fresh crab, too.

Room Tip: Lower rooms have private outdoor entrance, higher rooms access through the home.

We had a very nice and relaxing two days here at Sandpiper House. Bill was very nice and even upgraded our room for us. We stayed in the Weston which had spectacular views of the ocean. Both evenings he had cheese and crackers along with wine waiting for us when we arrived back at the inn from our day exploring Mendocino and Fort Bragg. Breakfast was well planned and very good. He worked really hard to try to please the guests and he certainly got our approval. The grounds, I might add, do need a little TLC, but Bill told us he was filling in and the new Innkeeper would be arriving the next week. We had a Groupon deal and since they were new owners, we felt they didn't really have to honor our coupon. We were thankful they did and had even extended the deadline for a month. We certainly would stay here again.

Room Tip: We loved the Weston - best view at the Inn

Wanted this to be our own secret hideaway, but have to share!!! Some of the most spectacular ocean views along the northern Mendocino coast. Usually sip coffee or wine in the backyard overlooking the crashing ocean waves. Watching the wildlife (such as bunnies, deer, wild birds) is enjoyable. We spend our evenings in a cozy room with crackling fire overlooking the ocean. Very romantic! Love the gourmet breakfast, which is also overlooking the ocean. It is always good to getaway and spend relaxing time at the Sandpiper Inn... :-)

Room Tip: We always stay in the Clifton room... Great view of the ocean, which is great to wake up to...

We bought a Groupon for the Sandpiper House Inn foolishly based only on the Groupon description and without doing our own research on the place. Our room, Headlands, was dark and dank. It smelled musty, the carpet was dirty, paint was peeling, the chairs in the sitting area part of the room were dirty, and to top if off, the gas fireplace, which is the sole source of heat in the room, died in the middle of the night.

We were told breakfast would be served at 9:30 - we were a little late coming down, but that was not an issue, as the innkeeper overslept and didn't have breakfast ready until well after 10. The muffins served with breakfast were good, the egg casserole was very bland.

We were booked for two nights. When we left the property to explore the area after our first night, we brought all of our luggage with us, hoping we could find someplace else to stay the second night of our weekend getaway. We lucked out and got a room at The Joshua Grindle Inn for the second night of our weekend getaway - what a difference.

Decided to stay at the Sandpiper Inn on the recommendation of friends who had stayed there a few years ago. Unfortunately, as someone at one of the restaurants in the small town of Elk informed us, the Inn recently changed management and (to put in politely) currently is in a "difficult transition" period.

Stayed in the "Evergreen" room, which is billed on the web site as the "most romantic" and the "most popular" room at the Inn.

PROS: The room is large and well appointed with a very comfortable canopy bed, a gas-log fireplace, and a very large bathroom featuring a "bath tub for two." French doors open to a small private deck with an beautiful ocean view. There is a small refrigerator in the room (but no microwave or coffee maker). The main breakfast area at the Inn also offers an excellent ocean view.

CONS: Many B&Bs are in "old" buildings, but there is a difference between old and run-down. There are structural cracks and peeling paint everywhere, the wooden decking is "spongy," and the once lovely gardens are overgrown and full of weeds. One-third of the small deck outside of our room was occupied by an out-of-control flowering vine, which attracted bees, making the deck essentially unusable.

Typical B&B services are nearly non-existent. The web site alleges that coffee and "hors d'oeurvres" are served in the evening. When we arrived at 5PM, there was a tray with brownie crumbs on the dining room table, and no coffee. When we asked teen-aged staff person (the only staff person we encountered during out stay) if the advertised evening service would be available again this evening ("evening" meaning to us "after 5PM"), her response was "what are you expecting?" to which we responded "what do you usually serve?" She said she'd "come up with something" in an hour or so. We returned in an hour to find chunks of imitation crabmeat unappetizingly presented in a cereal bowl, accompanied by a small cup of cocktail sauce, sitting at the end of the table. The tray with brownie crumbs was still on the table. No coffee.

We asked about breakfast service, and were informed that it would be served at 9:30AM (this would be a Wed morning, not Sat or Sun), but that coffee would be available after 7:00AM. The next morning, we went to get coffee around 7:30AM. No coffee, and the bowl of lump imitation crabmeat and the tray with brownie crumbs were still on the table. No staff anywhere we could find. Returned at 8:30AM to check out, but still no staff anywhere to be found. After waiting 15 minutes, we simply left the key in the kitchen and drove away.

OTHER: May be a "pro" or "con" depending on your point of view, but the rooms do not have phones or TVs, and there are no cell signals for any of the major carriers. The Inn alleges that they offer WiFi service, but when we asked the teen-age girl who appears to be running the place why it wasn't working, her reply was a classic "Yogi-ism": "It is a satellite connection - it only works when no one is using it." [It did work very early in the morning.]

If you are high maintenance and expect all the amenities of a five star resort, this is not the place for you (In fact, B&B's in general might not be for you). However, if you are down to earth and enjoy character in your choice of lodging, you can't beat the Sandpiper House Inn!
The Inn is located in the small town of Elk, about 25 minutes south of Mendocino. The property is literally located on Highway 1, so finding it is not difficult. The views from the property are spectacular, and the beautiful gardens offer secret nooks and crannies to enjoy the view while enjoying a glass of wine or cigar.
Curtis, the innkeeper, is a great guy! He is super knowledgeable about the area and is a fantastic cook! We even ran into him a local watering hole one night (Bobby Beacon's), and had a great time!
Although the decor was a bit dated, due to the historical nature of the home, we felt the decor added to the charm. In fact, for the area, the price point was actually a bargain, as the Mendocino area B&B's tend to be very expensive.
Lastly, we were also staying there through the use of a Groupon. I feel the need to point out that the Groupon clearly stated that the Groupon pricing was only good for three of the rooms (the rooms were also listed on the Groupon).
I read other reviews on here right before our trip. Due to the negative nature of the most recent reviews, I was very nervous about staying at the Inn. In the end, I am so glad we decided to go through with our reservations, as we had a wonderful time! We will be going back in the future! I highly recommend this place!

Room Tip: We recommend staying in the Weston, as the view from that room is breathtaking.

We just came back from spending our 40th anniversary. Our first stay was our 20th and we have stayed several times since then. Curtis, the caretaker, was excellent. Breakfasts were great. I note ownership neglect issues that will need to be addressed at some time. Portions of the house are leaning and the landscaping is getting over-grown. Despite these issues, we will continue to stay here when we come to the coast.

Room Tip: I like Weston the best.
