Owner description: Explore four miles of garden trails, enjoy restful vistas, flowering trees, majestic palms, and the nation’s largest bamboo collection. Thanks to our mild climate, plants from all over the world thrive here. Our diverse topography provides a variety of microclimates giving the visitor a sensation of going from a desert environment to a tropical rainforest, all within 37 acres.Located 30 minutes north of San Diego in Encinitas, California, San Diego Botanic Garden features numerous exhibits, including rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rainforest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes, succulent gardens, an herb garden, firesafe landscaping, a subtropical fruit garden, and native coastal sage natural areas. In June of 2009, we opened the Hamilton Children's Garden, the largest interactive children's garden on the West Coast.

Full disclosure - I am a member at SDBG. It is a very nice garden with good variety. Anyone who likes botanical gardens will enjoy a visit here. The only possible downside is for those who have issues walking hills. It is quite hilly.

The bonus to SDBG is all the activities they have for kids. "Seeds of Wonder" is an area for toddlers that has arts and crafts on T-W-Th and general fun other days. The Hamilton Children's Garden is a large play ground with activities for kids above toddler age.

For visitors this is a nice family outing for a few hours on a day when you need some down time from the Zoo, LegoLand and Sea World craziness. For locals it is great to get a membership and do frequent short visits. I take my kids 2-5 times a month.

Perfect weather, great to walk around the grounds at early evening and beautiful trails.
Kids part was great but it was getting dark by the time I found it.

Google maps for some weird reason takes you past the place and makes you do a u-turn about 1/2 mile up? Weird.

Though called the San Diego Botanic gardens, it is located a fair distanc to the north, near Encinitas, so you would definitely have to have a car to get there. If you are in the San Diego area, though, it's worth going out of your way to visit. You could easily combine it with a visit to nearby Torrey Pines to make a day if it. Beautiful gardens!

Enjoyed the garden. Very well done. Peaceful, quiet, especially the rainforest with waterfall. Plants from different regions of the world. Could spend hours at garden. Children's area is unique. Don't miss!

The San Diego Botanic Gardens are pretty cool! The gardens are quite spread out, covering a lot of ground. The variety of the plant species is pretty impressive. You have to do quite a bit of walking to see everything. Even if you go on a hot day, there is enough shade to keep you somewhat cool. Highlights include a lovely waterfall, an elevated lookout and the Children's Garden. I particularly like the bamboo forest and the herb garden. In early May, pretty much everything was in bloom. There is a small gift shop by the entrance. Use the map given to you when you enter… it is very helpful.
