“Nice place, friendly people”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

We stayed at this place for a night on our way for a long road trip to Canada and back. Upon arrival and knowing that it's our honeymoon, they gave us a slightly larger room (the room had been canceled), which was very much appreciated!

The staff were friendly and accommodating. We had a glass of wine at the bar (courtesy of the inn), and we enjoyed talking to the barman.

The room was clean, with nice, albeit old furniture. Nothing unexpected. We liked the room and our stay was pleasant, One thing that slightly bothered us was the smell that woke us up in the morning: our room was right on top of the kitchen and cooking was going on!

The breakfast was a little below our expectation, two eggs and bacon was the only choice; specially that the smell had made us really hungry!

Room Tip: I'd stay in a room further from the kitchen.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for writing the review about Carter House Inns in Trip Advisor, and for letting us know that you enjoyed your upgrade.

You will be happy to know that we have just finished upgrading all the furniture in all the rooms in the Hotel Carter. The new furniture came from Pottery Barn, and I'm sure you would enjoy this.

The breakfast does consist of a buffet in addition to the entree with several choices including granola, yogurt, muffins, toast, fresh fruit as well as a tart. If you have allergies or special food considerations, we are happy to accommodate you if we know about this beforehand.

Again, thank you for choosing to stay at Carter House Inns.

Best wishes,
Mark Carter

We stayed 2 nights in the Bell Cottage. The room was beautiful and very clean. Beds are amazingly comfortable. All staff was very accomidating. Great location. Only a few blocks to great dining and shops in Old Town area. Only thing that could've been better is the breakfast. The fritatta looked like rubber and both my bf and I could not stomach it. Other than that I would highly recommend staying at the Carter House Inn.

Dear Guest,

We appreciate your comments and your taking time to write a review to Trip Advisor, and we are happy that you enjoyed the rooms, staff, and location. Your breakfast seemed to be a deviation from our usual entree that day, but we are always looking for ways to improve the morning main course. Hopefully, you mentioned your dissatisfaction with the entree to the staff so they could make you an alternative dish?

Thank you again and best wishes.

We were planning a road trip down the coast and decided to stay a the Carter House Inn in Eureka since it looked nice on the web site. We opted for Bell Cottage to have a little more quiet and privacy. That’s in a building across the street and around the corner. All seemed okay at first glance. Then we noticed a lot of road noise from 101, only a block and a half away. This is an older building that had been renovated but they obviously hadn’t replaced the windows.

The hotel is located in a neighborhood that seems marginal. Parking options are behind the main hotel building or on the street. We didn’t feel good about leaving our car. Furthermore, the innkeeper suggested that we drive, rather than walk to dinner, five blocks away.

The cottage had several other guest rooms. There was no carpet on the hallway floor so we were awakened by other guests clomping by our door in the middle of the night. The bed backed up to the wall on the hallway and was only about a foot away from the door so we heard everything. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant consisted of a cold buffet and one cooked item each day, made order. It was gluten free fritatta that day, bland and rubbery.

We’ve stayed in some beautifully renovated period properties but Carter House didn’t compare. It’s pretending to be something it isn’t and is way overpriced for what you actually get.

Room Tip: Don't stay in Bell Cottage! Better yet, skip Eureka.

My husband and I just drove the Pacific Coast Highway from Seattle to San Diego. I used trip advisor to get ideas along the way, but did not make any reservations before we knew where we would end up. Carter House Inn was on my list of possibilities. We called to reserve a room about two hours before we arrived in Coos Bay. The room they quoted was behind the bar; but we never heard any noise. The breakfast was chef's choice. Very good! The room was clean and very nice. And the sheets were FABULOUS!!

For a place with aspirations there needs to be more attention to detail. For example we would have liked bedside tables / nightstands; somewhere to hang coats by the entry; complimentary bottled water without having to ask for it; and a bath tub in a bathroom with great open spaces. The room wasn't that clean either.

We arrived just before 5pm and after unloading the car we came across to the main house for the appetisers just in time to see them being cleared away. We are pleased to report that the receptionist sorted out a fresh plate for us, but other travellers please note appetisers are 4 til 5!

Note: Our room was in the original B&B building - room 505. Whilst technically at street level it felt like being in the basement due to the slope of the street. Very cave-like. Also it has it's own separate private entrance, but that means that access to the communal lounge and kitchen areas is via a walk around the outside of the building, so we never used them.

We were expecting better.

Dear Guest,
We appreciate your review and comments and thank you for your submission. There actually is an honor basket in each room with complimentary still water, and also most of our rooms have tubs as well as showers. We are sorry that Room 505 in the Carter House did not meet your needs and we hope that you will call the next time you stay with us to discuss your needs as almost every room is different. In the meantime, thank you for staying with us and have a great summer.
Best wishes,

The Carter House Inn is a beautiful Victorian that for the most part has been maintained well. We stayed in the guest house across from the hotel/restaurant for 3 nights and the suite was very clean, comfortable and nicely appointed.

We had dinner at 301, the hotel restaurant the first evening of our visit and the food was truly delicious from beginning to end. The breakfast though, was another story entirely. All three mornings we found empty trays of fruit/pastries and an empty bowl of granola. There was only one server and he was running around like crazy trying to stay on top of everything. Two mornings there were no clean coffee cups available (the server told us to use paper cups). Sorry, but for $315/night I think there should be coffee cups available. Two of three mornings the regular coffee air pot was empty when we arrived. The hot entree all three mornings was eggs-twice a really awful frittata that tasted like rubber. The red pepper cream that they use as a garnish on the eggs is tasteless.

Finally, about the town of Eureka...you will be intimidated if you do not feel comfortable being in a city overtaken by homlessness. I have lived in large cities all of my life and have never seen such a disproportionate number of indigent people. It bothered me so much that I Googled "homeless in Eureka" and found articles written about it. Eureka could be a wonderful, vibrant small city due to it's location close to the Redwood forests, but instead it feels like a compound for people with addiction/mental health issues. Each night of our stay we heard people arguing/yelling outside our windows. The last morning of our stay there was a person lying down behind a hedge in front of our house. A previous reviewer wrote that "Old Town was dead" when he visited......the reason it's dead is because you don't want to be walking around there after 6:00pm. There were several shops I wanted to visit, but upon returning from hiking all day in the Redwoods we found Old Town to be filled with people talking to walls and pushing baby strollers filled with everything they owned. It was very sad.

The Redwood forests were spectacular and worth the visit, but if I ever returned I would stay in Ferndale, a quaint small town near Eureka. It had some beautiful B&B options, gorgeous old Victorian homes, and none of the problems related to Eureka.
