The Ferndale Cemetery has tombstones dating back to the mid eighteen hundreds. The site is located on a hill behind the old Methodist church and you can view all of Ferndale and even see the ocean on a clear day.

Walking throught the town at dusk, we stumbled upon this beautiful cemetery, adjacent to a former church with some remarkable stained glass. It was the church glass that attracted our attention, then we looked to the left. The cemetery draws you in, underneath the wrought iron scrolled Ferndale Cemetery arch. Climb the hills between the gravesites and you begin to see the history of this town that time forgot. The mist was just coming over the pines at the far end of the cemetery, which made me feel like I was on the set of Wuthering Heights! The tombstones are unique, varied and very old. Family histories play out in their plots, causing your imagination to soar. If you are in Ferndale, don't miss this graveyard. It should be on your list of "must-sees"!

A terraced cemetery on a hill overlooking the town- such a peaceful place to visit and roam and very well kept. It is so unique and the design just makes sense. There were beautiful flowers and plants growing everywhere. It makes an interesting but tight drive and an even better walk.

We knew who we were looking for, and where their family plot was located. Fortunately. When we were essentially done photographing our family's obelisk and headstones, I called the Ferndale City Hall number on the nearby sign. They readily admitted the know nothing about the cemetery.

At least they were able to give the name of number of a contact person with the Ferndale Cemetery Association. To save you grief, here is it (current as of Sep 2013): Eunice Sanborn, (707) 786-4394. I called Eunice after we got back home, and she couldn't have been nicer of more helpful!

So if you need help with the Historic Ferndale Cemetery, bypass City Hall and go direct to Eunice!

I loved the way it looked and the old tombstones were so cool. Not your normal cemetery. We loved the calm when we walked around.
