Attraction details
Owner description: Trips departing from both Fort Bragg, CA and Willits, CA on the historic Redwood Route of Mendocino County. The Pudding Creek Express departs from Fort Bragg, on which your train will travel along the Pudding Creek Estuary to Glen Blair Junction on this short and scenic 1-hour, 7-mile roundtrip. You will be traveling over some of the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad in 1885. Once the train stops it will immediately return to Fort Bragg. The Northspur Flyer departs from Willits, on which your train will climb the Eastern slope of the Coastal Mountain Range and cut through it at Tunnel #2 (the Summit) before descending down into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon. This 4-hour, 40-mile roundtrip allows you to explore the wondrous forest where the world’s tallest trees take you back in time. Once you arrive at Northspur, the midpoint of the railroad, you will disembark for an opportunity to walk around, purchase lunch, and breathe the pristine mountain air.

“A good railroad journey and fun in Ft. Bragg”
Reviewed 28 June 2012

We ride tourist trains across North America and made the pretty but challenging drive to Ft. Bragg specifically for the Skunk Train (there are plenty of other things to do in Ft. Bragg as well and it's a good destination point). We booked the art car-parlor car (first class) service on the steam train to larkspur. If you are expecting the physical amenities of typical parlor cars, forget it. This is a standard heavyweight coach with a makeshift bar. First rule ... get over it. The adults-only environment and wine/beer tasting make up for what the actual car lacks. The car was far from full the day we went, and we were able to spread out over two seats. The staff and other passengers were very friendly, and we all had a good time. On the way back, the parlor car was at the end of the train. This allowed for great photos of a beautiful redwood forest. They let you hang out of the vestibules, and you can access the open-air car. The steam locomotive was impeccably maintained, and I'm sure the parlor car itself will be improved with time. The Skunk Train is a good experience and worth the trip to Ft. Bragg. A note, get to the head of the herd for food at Larkspur.

The trip through the Redwoods was great , with excellent period appropriate musical accompaniment, an excellent guide and a great view of the redwoods. The lunch stop was enjoyable with an excellent meal and gift shops to browse. We highly recommend.

“Family Train Trip”
Reviewed 28 June 2012

We took the morning trip and enjoyed it with our family.
We had done things like this in the past when our children were young so it was fun to do it as adults. Maybe some day we will be lucky enough to take grandchildren.

“Only adults traveling? Upgrade to Parlor Car!”
Reviewed 19 June 2012

We were in the area and decided to try out the Skunk Train. We went on Memorial Day and there was a steam engine that day. We upgraded to the parlor car so we could do some wine tasting along the way. (It was an added bonus that children are not allowed on the parlor car... Nothing against kids, I just know how antsy they get after an hour.) They greeted us with mimosas and little quiches. The rest of the day there were cheese & crackers and fruit & chocolates. We tried a nice selection of local wines. I wish I could remember the lady's name that was so helpful and friendly. She was awesome and recommended other area attractions.

The rest of these reviews capture the experience quite well. Oh, the restrooms are a hoot to use! It's hilarious to try to pee while you're rocking back and forth from the train movement!
