Owner description: Trips departing from both Fort Bragg, CA and Willits, CA on the historic Redwood Route of Mendocino County. The Pudding Creek Express departs from Fort Bragg, on which your train will travel along the Pudding Creek Estuary to Glen Blair Junction on this short and scenic 1-hour, 7-mile roundtrip. You will be traveling over some of the first tracks laid down by the California Western Railroad in 1885. Once the train stops it will immediately return to Fort Bragg. The Northspur Flyer departs from Willits, on which your train will climb the Eastern slope of the Coastal Mountain Range and cut through it at Tunnel #2 (the Summit) before descending down into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon. This 4-hour, 40-mile roundtrip allows you to explore the wondrous forest where the world’s tallest trees take you back in time. Once you arrive at Northspur, the midpoint of the railroad, you will disembark for an opportunity to walk around, purchase lunch, and breathe the pristine mountain air.

Was checking out the things to Fort Bragg and Trip Advisor mentioned the Skunk Train.

The decision was taken and I am just so glad we made it just in time.

The steam engine train leaves at 10 AM and takes about 4-5 hours. It's a round trip through the Redwoods along the Noyo river to Northspur. With an hour long break there you return back the same way.

On the way there the conductor tells you the story of the train, the lumberjacks, the forests and there is a country singer singing folk songs.

There is a refreshment car to buy snacks and drinks on the way.

This is a must do if you love trains.

We have done the skunk train a few different times going roundtrip from Willits to Northspur and back and my favorite the Overnighter which goes from Willits to Fort Bragg at the coast then returns another day to Willits. I prefer this route because Fort Bragg is a very cool town and we especially enjoy brews and food at the North Coast Brewing Company. We normally stay at the Willits KOA in our Motorcoach and the Skunk Train stops right at the KOA and picks us up. How convenient is that? The train rides amongst the Giant Sequoias and the Coastal Redwoods as well as many other trees, plants and wildlife and the scent of the Redwoods is just spectacular mixed with the noise and scent of the train. I highly recommend as something you'll forever remember.

We rode the Skunk Train twice in May.

First we did the round trip Fort Bragg - North Spur - Fort Bragg. A lovely trip. There is just enough time in North Spur to get your lunch and a drink, take your picture at the giant hollow redwood and reboard the train for the return trip. We spent most of the time on the open-air car. So much of the view is looking up at the wonderful trees, and it is just harder to see it all from the coach windows. The weather was delightful and mild.

On the next day we rode the train one-way: Fort Bragg - North Spur - Willits. A lovely trip, as well! You must change trains in North Spur, and be very careful not to miss the boarding call for the Willits-bound train (for our trip it was one of the "motor-cars.")

We had pre-arranged our transportation from Willits back to Fort Bragg with a taxi service from Fort Bragg. It worked beautifully for us-- our driver met us at the Willits station at the arranged time and dropped us back at our car at the Fort Bragg station about an hour later.

Be very aware if you choose to do this that Willits and Fort Bragg are both very small towns. Willits currently has no taxi service of it's own, and Fort Bragg only has one, with exactly one driver. So book your ride well in advance. Especially in the busy seasons. Confirm with your driver the day before. Be especially aware that you alone are responsible for these arrangements, not the Skunk Train.

There is also MTA bus service between Fort Bragg and Willits. It is very economical at about $3.50 per person, but involves walking a bit to get right to the station.

We will definitely ride the Skunk Train again next time we are in Fort Bragg!

... especially if you're a train buff that appreciates riding through a redwood forest. They offer rides in a self-contained motor car (like a bus on rails) and in cars drawn by a large diesel engine and others drawn by a real steam engine. There are very few steam engines running these days in the world so this is a special treat, and my favorite. The conductor will explain the history of the area that the track passes through with emphasis on the former logging industry that had been very active there.

The train singer's music is a pleasure to listen to, as well. He, the conductor, and the staff in the train depot are friendly and polite, and make the trip a pleasant one for the passengers. The engineers running the locomotives are well-trained and dedicated to making the trips safe and enjoyable.

The Skunk Train is a real jewel on California's north coast.
