“Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

Cynthia greeted us warmly upon our arrival. We had the first floor room nearest the front of the house. The room was tastefully decorated, the queen size bed was comfortable, and the electric heater was sufficient to warm the room. The was a sign up for which of the two breakfasts we would be eating at. The breakfasts were delilcious. The B&B was part of a package we got through "Living Social." The package included the B&B, ticket to the Botanical Gardens, tickets for the "Skunk Train," and a $75 voucher toward dinner at the "Mendo Bistro."

Our experience was awful from the cold, unwelcoming greeting by the owner, to the substandard room, to the bad news that breakfast the next morning was ONLY being served at 9 AM even after we told the owner we needed to leave by 7:45 AM. Every other B&B where we've stayed has offered at least two breakfast seatings or let us pick a time to eat. Not here - it was 9 AM and no other option available, not even coffee or fruit was offered, and certainly no partial refund of our room + breakfast rate. The house smelled of dirty carpet and mildew, and the common area was not welcoming. Our room was very outdated, sort of like staying at my great aunt Ruth's house, with the bathroom fixtures being in terrible condition. The mattress on the bed clearly had seen better days, with that dreaded middle sag that bodes of a poor night's sleep. We and several other guests had problems using the room keys, which were very difficult to turn and required at least three attempts to lock or unlock the rooms. This is an old house with very little soundproofing so we were able to clearly hear other guests coming, going, and talking. For the rate we were charged, this place was an utterly dismal experience.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

Cynthia gave a friendly welcome and showed off the Inn. It is not "in the country", but on the main drag through Ft. Bragg. Some parking in the rear. Rooms are set back and traffic noise is not an issue. The Inn is decorated in numerous styles with plenty of bric-brac. I had a sufficient size queen bed room, firm mattress; I slept well. The bathroom a bit small. Bed time hours afforded me a listening-in on other guests laughter, conversations, snooring, showers, etc. The breakfast was creative, but did not fill the stomach of this grown man. Coffee was a bit weak.
Overall, the price paid for this in-'n-out overnight stay compared well to hotels/motels in the area and had a better flair. A short walk down the street is the North Coast Brewing Company Taproom and Grill. It has my recommendation!

PS: The Country Inn is up for sale.

We arrived late afternoon, the place was freezing...showed to our room, which was small but clean. There was an electric wall heater which the man who was there turned in. The "common area" was not inviting, had two stoves to heat it but they were not on. We ended up spending our evening having dinner and then sitting in the local Starbucks to have coffee, read and be warm. We were not displeased with the breakfast, actually it was good, but we were surprised not to have smelled anything cooking....and the only time we saw the proprietress was when we went to let them know we were not staying for the next night. It just missed in so many ways..comfort, warmth, congeniality. But as my husband said, we got what they said...bed and a breakfast. Also our bedroom window did not open, which is not acceptable to me.

Room Tip: Make sure your windows open! This was a strange place......

The main reason my husband and I go to B&B's is to have time to socialize with the other guests. The website for the Country Inn shows a nice living room with a fireplace - shown as a common area. When we arrived the first thing I noticed was that the living room was now part of the private living space. This left only the very small dinning area for guests to sit and talk. This room was made even smaller by the very large Christmas tree in one corner. Our room (Harvest Moon - the one shown on the website) was small but okay. The carpets in the hallway were very stained and looked terrible. The breakfast was okay but nothing special. I am glad we had the Living Social coupon to reduce the rate. When we got home I looked up the B&B and noticed it was for sale. The current "hostess" has only been there since August when the owners left after 12 years of running the place.

Room Tip: You get what you pay for - stay somewhere else!

We went to the Country Inn on a Living Social Deal. The price seemed pretty attractive for what we were getting. Reading reviews, I heard people raving about the breakfast. Would I return here again?: No. The rooms were quaint & the service to them was impeccable. BUT, the carpeting in the room was horribly stained, as was the carpeting down the main hallway. It made the room quite unattractive! The rest of the house has many areas that were cluttered, which also was unattractive. The couple servicing the B & B were responsive & helpful. The breakfast was not ordinary but not spectacular either. I would have liked some sort of meat with the offerings and some sort of pastry or muffin, instead of limp tortillas. We wanted a fireplace room and had to pay extra for it. With our LS deal, they asked us to pay $35. a night for the fireplace. Even though we enjoyed having the fire, I wish I hadn't paid the extra $$ for it. What we got each night was one $3. Presto Log. Didn't seem worth the cost. Don't expect any lush or attractive grounds either. The B&B is located on the main drag, right off the street. It is in in the older, historic part. That being said, at this time of year, we did not find noise an issue, once inside. I had more of an issue with how cold their cramped dinning area was when we came for BKF! I would not say not to go, especially if you get a deal. But, there were many places to choose from & in December, you'd think prices would be lower. I'd shop around first.

Room Tip: Might want to be towards the back and off the street.

We arrived just before 10 PM after a long drive up the coast. We were reprimanded for being so late. Then we were told we HAD to choose a time for breakfast immediately....before we lugged our bags up the 2 flights of stairs to a room called "Granny's Atic". We tried to get settled quietly, as all the other rooms were dark.
We needed a corkscrew to open our bottle of wine, before we went out to the hot tub and had to knock on the manager's door, since it was closed. She very reluctanly found one to loan us. The hot tub was a complete disappointment; it was barely warm. We were out there for 5 minutes and when we came back inside, all the lights were out!
The bedding consisted of worn (vintage???) flannel sheets. Not pleasant at all. There was no shower.....just a tub and a hand held shower attachment we found tucked into a drawer. It had to be shoved up into the faucet; there was no stopper for the tub, or shower curtain, so it was VERY uncomfortable. It was an atic room and there were dormers everywhere. Charming, yes, but anyone over 5'4" could not stand up straight except for in the middle of the room.
The food at breakfast was tasty, but as another reviewer said, there were no choices. One guest was vegetarian and another was diabetic and they was very little for them to eat.

Unfortunately, we were prepaid for 2 nights and had to make the best of it, but will never go back.
