My husband, a native of Southern California, took me to this old Spanish Mission over Thanksgiving weekend. It was well worth the trip. Very interesting piece of old California history, about which I knew very little. The little museum was very informative. Sadly, the gift shop does not cater to tourists as it was largely religious items, however there were a few history books and some postcards.

“Interesting and educational”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2013

Fremont is a residential city, but recently the city is been stepping up to the plate in having its residents spend those dollars in Fremont rather than San Jose or other nearby major cities.

Mission however, is a totally different story. It has been in Fremont from the beginning and it defies Fremont's long history. If you live in Fremont or near by towns you owe it to your self to know how it started, and visit a few of the several hundred year old bernal sites. The church is completely rebuilt using the original blue prints after the original was destroyed due to natural reasons. The rebuild church resembles the original in every way and it is a great place to take a few pictures.

This is a safe and educational place for the entire family, though the young ones may want to skip the historical cemetery, unless this is a learning exercise for them.

“beautifully restored building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

It is fun to find history in Fremont! The Mission has been beautifully restored. The original was damaged by earthquakes and weather. They rebuilt it very well. The murals and fittings have been restored. They are spectacular.
The history that goes with the Missions is grim but interesting. The side buildings and the cemetery are also well worth the visit.
This is the perfect Mission to bring your Fourth grader to visit. It is easy to get to and interesting.

“San Jose Mission”

Beautifully restored mission, lots of historical information. We especially wanted to visit this mission as my father was named for St. Joselph. I'd recommend this to others. Since the "sort of visit" options closest to ours is Friends (we were three adult women, mother and two daughters), that's what I'm picking.

First of all, it's not in San Jose, but in Fremont. It is a wonderfully restored and lovingly maintained mission church with a very nice museum. There the original 1830 hammered copper baptismal font in the church, along with many other interesting art works.
