We arrived here with several other cyclists on a trip through the Redwoods in early July. The first thing my wife said was 'its right out of an Agatha Christie novel!'. Lovely classic hotel, with a great lobby, lovely dining hall with white linen table clothes. I fully expected to see Hercule Poirot fussing over his hard-boiled egg in the dining room at breakfast time. Our room was small but lovely, with embroidered bed pillows and a bottle of sherry on the dresser.

There is a large outdoor patio behind the hotel for those who like to eat outside, complete with a view of the eel river below. It got a bit cool during our meal, but the staff brought out blankets for us to keep warm. A really nice place to spend a long evening.

Some of our group complained about thin walls, noisy guests in the middle of that night and the lack of a television. But we had no problems, and we appreciated the creaky floors and atmosphere of a classic hotel.

We had breakfast in the dining hall before our departure. Very nice food and service. We'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: be ready to climb stairs to get to your room. The hotel staff will assist you with your bags.

Dear Photo Traveler Dan,

Thank you for your review. We host many cycling groups at the Inn throughout the year and were pleased that you selected our property. I noticed several cyclists in our lounge this morning who were enjoying an early breakfast while viewing the Tour de France. We hope you will join us again on your next visit to the redwoods.

Initial impressions of the property were much better than we expected; sometimes these old historic properties are more about the history than the present (i.e., comfort is sacrificed) but we were quite taken-back by the cottage, the rooms, the grounds and the patio. Very nice indeed.

Dinner was quite good; not a competition for the best in California, but well done, respectful food and in summer on the patio it makes for a memorable meal. Bar is also a nice place for a drink.

The hotel is close to the road but most rooms face away so we didn't hear any noise. Our only major issue was that it was very hot when we were there, and it turned out the garden cottage (the really nice suite) was not air conditioned; made for some warmer-than-desired nights.

Breakfasts were OK; service was a little hit-and-miss and the food wasn't too impressive.

All in all, would stay again. After driving around the region and seeing the quality of other places, it's definitely the oasis in the group.

Dear Real_FoodieToronto,

Thank you for your review. Our goal is to always provide the ultimate in comfortable, serene environments for our guests. Some years ago when it became clear that the unreliability of the inn’s cooling system jeopardized guest comfort, the inn replaced the old, inefficient cooler system with a modern chiller system. Our Cottage is equipped with this system, though on warmer days we recommend that our guests keep their windows and exterior doors closed to allow the system to work with greater efficiency. We hope you will join us again on your next visit to the region.

A very welcoming historic inn with beautiful grounds and friendly staff. Well decorated and very comfortable and clean. Great hospitality and the breakfast is wonderfully delicious! Try the French Toast!

Room Tip: We slept in the room that had two twin beds and it was perfect for our mother- daughter getaway.

Dear Sandy909...

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you had a great mother-daughter getaway and were able to explore the Avenue of the Giants - it is truly an amazing gateway to the redwoods and is a favorite day trip for the majority of our guests. We hope that you will both be able to join us in the near future.

We stayed in the cottage room, and it's the closest room to Hwy 101. If you're a light sleeper, the zipping big rigs will keep you awake. The wifi was also unreliable from this room. The service was great, as they (no questions asked) let us out of the 2nd night reservation so we can move to another hotel and get sleep. I suspect others have had the same issue. The live music at night was wonderful during dinner.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the cottage if you're a light sleeper due to the Hwy 101 noise.

Dear Aridon99

We appreciate your feedback and comments. Our location is a double-edged sword. Not only do we have our own unique exit off the redwood highway (Benbow Exit 636) we are a convenient stopping point for guests traveling between the bay area and the Pacific Northwest. If we were to build a new property in Humboldt County, lodging industry consultants would stress the importance of easy highway access and visibility. While we do get some traffic noise, we are always happy to move our guests to the Historical Building or amend reservations as we did in your case. We hope that you will return to give us your assessment of a Premium King room on the west side of the Inn that overlooks the Eel River and a large grove of redwoods.

We just got back from a week long stay there. We had the terrace room 115 with a beautiful view. The food was great. The staff is really nice. The grounds are beautiful with lots of flowers. They had live music on the terrace. I love this place and will definitely come back!
