The following is a very detailed review of the Gardena Terrace Inn. At the time of this writing, the Inn is rated #1 out of 12 Gardena Hotels.
My family and I got two rooms at the Inn for two nights during a holiday weekend. It took a long time to check in, as it appeared there was some sort of problem at the front desk when I presented my online reservation.
It turns out our “internet” reservations were not accounted for (we booked our May 25th arrival online on April 25th). In order to rectify the problem, we were offered a Jacuzzi suite (Room #301) for one night and then would be transferred to another room for a second night. Our parent was assigned Room 3A. However, this room was not marked and appeared to be a smaller, overflow type room. Also, we were alarmed to see an ash tray outside that room, as we do not smoke. Lastly, there was no telephone in Room 3A.
The inn is a three story building with parking on the first floor along with the Front Desk. On the second floor are rooms, a soda vending machine, an ice machine, and a small room for continental breakfast (size of a standard hotel room).
Since the breakfast room is very small (only two bistro tables fit in there and smaller than a standard hotel room), it may be intended for guests to take food items to go. The continental breakfast consists of coffee, orange juice, two choices of dry cereal and milk, white rice, and packaged Danishes. There is also a water purification machine in this area. We were told breakfast would open between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. (no posted sign). The breakfast room is located on the second floor in a French door enclosed room. However, staff is willing to open the room earlier if you need to travel.
Free Internet is provided by the hotel, and the username and password for the EthoStream service is very easy to access for laptops and cell phones. We experienced absolutely no problems at all with this access. Please note that if you will see the names of other people via the Network option, but I was not able to access anyone else’s computer (thank goodness) and I hope the same was for mine.
Room #301 is the Jacuzzi suite and is located on the western corner of the hotel next to the elevator. The room is very large, and there is a small balcony that faces Western Street. In the afternoon, the western sun is beating down into your room. With two sets of large windows, you will need to keep your shades drawn until the western sun goes down. Also, since the room is on Western Avenue, if you are sensitive to noise or the sound of passing cars, you may wish to ask for an interior room.
There is only one wash cloth and one hand towel provided for guests; you will need to ask for more towels at the front desk. The standup shower in Room #301 does not have a place to hold soap, so the window shelf is your only option. Also, there is only one towel rack and no other hook or rack for guests to hang towels. There is an exhaust fan in the room that turns on only when the light is on. Typical toiletries are in the room (soap, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner).
There is a bistro table and two chairs in the room, a small refrigerator and a small microwave. The table was not wiped off, as I felt something sticky on the table. There is no desk in the room, so the table will need to be used for that.
The closet for the room is very small, and our room had only one nightstand in Room #301. There is a light switch on the wall that enables guests to turn on the two recessed lights above the headboard.
We were supposed to change rooms due to the upgrade and we advised that we would be leaving around 10 a.m. and would move our items out. At 9:45 a.m., while were still in our room, our room door was opened with no knock despite a sign that said “Please Do Not Disturb.” Though the female manager was very apologetic, it was a good thing that we were dressed.
We were moved to Room #303 for our second night for the reason as described in the beginning of this review. The room is an average size, and also has a refrigerator, microwave and bistro table. The bathroom does not have an air/heat grate, so you must leave the door open for heating and cooling. With regard to the noise level, this room was much quieter because it was within the interior of the hotel rather than having windows next to the street like Jacuzzi Room 301 in which can hear street traffic. The closet for Room #303 was larger than the Room 301. There was no "Please Do Not Disturb" sign available for us to place on our door. A fire alarm was missing from our room but we reported it and staff immediately installed a new one within minutes of the notification.
All three rooms we rented had an “old” food cooking smell (rather than and old building smell). We always bring room fragrance when we travel, which alleviated the smell.
In Gardena on Western Avenue alone, there are about 10 other motels or inns very close to this one. All of them are small, locally owned facilities. This inn is located on the side of town that is Japanese, Korean, and Philippino. It seems quiet and is easy to find.
Within half a mile is a Ralph’s grocery store, Jack In the Box, King’s Hawaiian Restaurant (The Local Place), Carl’s Jr., Del Taco, Target, Starbuck’s, Albertson’s, Chipotle, Quizno’s, Denny’s, 99 Ranch Market, Wendy’s, Sam’s Club, McDonald’s, Food For Less and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. One mile away there is a Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Burger King, and a CVS Pharmacy. Though there is not a fitness room at the hotel, there is a 24 Hour Fitness Active that is 2.7 miles away at 4240 Redondo Beach Boulevard in Torrance.
If you need a room specifically in Gardena, then this inn is perfect for your needs. The price is reasonable for what you get in this area ($70 per night). The husband and wife onsite managers are very accommodating and ask that if you need anything, to please let them know because hospitality is very important to them.
