“A Jewel in the Sierras”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2006

We just got back from an amazing vacation in the Northern Sierras. If you are looking for a wonderful place to escape to the mountains with relatively easy access, yet very few people, go to the Lakes Basin Recreation Area and stay at Gold Lake Lodge.

It's located about 50 miles northwest of Truckee. Gold Lake Lodge is the trailhead for some of the most amazing hikes in the area. In about a 4 mile loop, you will pass by 7 Alpine lakes just by heading out your cabin door. Hikes can be as easy or hard as you want with close access to the Pacific Crest Trail. Other activities in the area include fishing, boating, windsurfing, horseback riding, mountain biking, gold mines and mining history, and even golf (by heading back into town). The lodge is small with only 10 cabins (so you really feel uncrowded), rustic (national historic landmark), but very comfortable. Row boats are available to lodge guests at two of the lakes. The Barker family who owns this place are so extremely nice, accommodating, gracious hosts, and real experts about everything in the area. The food is plentiful and really, really good. Anyway, we love this place (this is our sixth year) !

  • Liked — The great hiking, the wildflowers, the great food, and really wonderful hosts.
  • Disliked — The dusk mosquitos
