“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013

We were due to stay in the Yosemite valley at Curry village and held out to the late before booking Evergreen.

We turned up and we were surprised with the location. Only a few miles from the entrance to the national park.

The lodge has lots to see and do, which is great when the park was closed. There is a swimming pool, hot tub, recreation room, and small touches like, hammocks and sunset viewing platforms with seating and tables.

We stayed in the custom camping area. The tents as comfortable, we were supplied a fleece type sleeping back and a normal sleeping bag which kept the body quite toasty in the cold evenings, however, I would recommend a beanie type of hat to keep your head warm as you would wake each morning with a a nice block on your head.

Wifi was a nice touch but due to the location it was rubbish as it used satellites to connect. It was welcome when you managed to gets. Couple of minutes of connection. They also had three PCs in the recreation room. Only one of these seemed to have an internet connection and that too was slow.

If you are forced to eat at the lodge, be prepared to pay a premium for the convenience. The food was pricey.

On check in, we were supplied with a helpful little guide for things to do while the parks as closed and this was fantastic. We followed the route to a small ghost town called Bodie. It was around 2.5 hours away over the Tioga pass but was well worth the journey.

I would love to return here for a few slightly longer to enjoy the pool etc. would recommend to friends and family.

Room Tip: We stayed in tent 5 which was far enough away from the bear boxes but close enough to the toilets an...

We visited Evergreen during the government shutdown. The staff were on hand to offer ideas on other activities whilst the park was shut.

Nice lodges in a great location. The pool area is also lovely and we were never stuck for something to do. The on site restaurant is superb with fantastic food and a very wide selection of drinks.

There is also a well stocked shop on site.

This is in no way the lodges fault but during our visit my other half fell ill. We needed a doctor and were told they usually use the medical centre in Yosemite Valley but it was shut due govt shutdown. I was given 2 pieces of paper for hospitals about 2 hours drive away. One it turns out had shut down 8 years previous and on passing Groveland en route to the other option we saw a medical centre there. It's worth knowing where you would go as even the valley is a fair drive from the property if you were in a rush and there is no medical staff on site.

Hi, I’m Lee Zimmerman, one of the owners of the Evergreen Lodge. Thanks for taking time to write your review. I’m so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and found plenty to do around the Evergreen despite the government shutdown. I’m also glad you enjoyed our food and staff. I’m sorry to hear you needed a doctor during your visit, and for the confusion caused by our directions sheet. It is supposed to take you right to the new hospital (which passes by the old shut down hospital), but it sounds like it wasn’t clear. We have since updated the directions sheet and clarified that you will pass the old closed hospital on the way. We really appreciate your feedback on this, as the last thing we’d want is to confuse someone who needs immediate medical care. We hope to see you again sometime, and thanks again for highlighting your confusion so we could improve our materials.

Two of us turned up on what turned out to be the last day of the govt shutdown, not really expecting to see much. So we were pleasantly surprised when the park opened up without too many tourists about. Bethany, one of the lodge guides, was as keen as us to finally get back to the park and away from her alternative mopping the floor duties. It was probably the best tour I have ever been on. She definitely should get a raise. As we were the only ones on the tour we were able to be quite flexible on what we did.
Overall very happy with the facilities in such an out of the way location. Majority of staff were very friendly and helpful. Peaceful location.
Whilst in the park we also stopped at the visually impressive Ahwahnee Hotel for a drink. Now whilst I quite like a bit of luxury and grandeur, I thought the Evergreen was miles ahead with its overall ambience and friendliness.

A return trip (I stayed with family one night before, this time 4 nights), and this place is special. Consider it a rustic Centre Parks (for those from the UK), decent quality rooms. A long (7 mile) drive through the forest from Yosemite NW entrance, but a perfect spot for when the US Government closes the National Parks. A recently added swimming pool and hot tub area raises the standard (it was excellent and almost empty every day), and the Recreation Centre is a relaxing place to chill. A decent breakfast, using proper plates/mugs/cutlery, but an extra cost. Limited Wi-Fi access, just in a few locations, slow and intermittent (due to a satellite connection), but the real bonus for those that want to get away from it all is that cell phone reception is almost non existent (Yipee)!! I would definitely return and recommend.

Room Tip: Look at the Lodge cabin layout

We stayed here during the Government shutdown but we were not disappointed when we arrived at the lodge. We stayed in a log cabin which was spotless, plenty big enough for 2 and had everything we needed, including a coffee machine, fridge, excellent radio and a games basket!

The staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful and there were lots of activities planned because of the shutdown. They were also knowledgeable about the surrounding area and what we could/couldn't do because of the shutdown. We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner at the tavern/restaurant. We were served by Rachel several times who was lovely and friendly.

We made use of the pool and hot tub which were great and very clean! If you stay here you definitely need to make use of sunset point! Amazing views!

If ever make it back to Yosemite we would stay here again.

So more commerial, not the lodge in the middle of the National Forest surrounded by wilderness that I pictured. More of a centre parks (for the Euro customers reading). It is like a centre parks without the sporting sections.

That said, it isnt advertised poorly, its just wasnt what I had hoped.

Now onto the review of what we had,
The lodge itself was clean, and well stocked
The pool was clean, great friendly bar staff and decent food. The evening "all you can eat" buffet is really overpriced and not the best.
Evening meals over at the main bar were really homely, and welcoming staff.

They completely lost our meal one night but resolved it to our satisfaction
Another evening we had to wait an hour for a table, so maybe arrive early or send a member of the family to go down and pre drink and que for you!

The table tennis, pool and kids area was excellent and the wifi reading area is nicely situate and stocked.

We went on the local walks but really needed to drive to get to a decent walk. The perimetre walk only went to remind you the place was very small. Although the sunset point was amazing at sunset.

I've rated it very good, which may be a little generous, but aspects really were really good.

My husband and I stayed at Evergreen in June during our first visit to Yosemite. We loved it! We opted to stay in the tents so that we could have the outdoor experience while also having a shower. The pool and hot tub were newly renovated and the food was excellent. Be sure to head to the fire pit for free s'mores every night. I also wish I would have checked out the on site yoga classes, maybe next time! We would definitely stay there again. Although an hour drive from the valley floor, it wasn't an issue. The drive was gorgeous and we were up early enough that we didn't encounter any traffic jams.

Room Tip: The tents are wonderful, but count on being woken up by the sound of birds and the rising sun. We we...
